Unfinished Dream

I always find him playing Erhu on the sofa on weekends. He is over fifty years old now, time eroded his face and left a lot of traces; stress from family made him looks tired and ran out of energy; chronic diseases forced him took medicines every day and caused him a weak body. However, I can still feel his passion for music. His eyes are closed and facial expression is changing continuously. Along with different melodies, sometimes he seems to be happy, sometimes he seems to be excited, sometimes he seems to be sad. He is deep into the music, especially the Erhu compositions he is playing, although he is a successful businessman and a manager of a company now. His story begins from decades years ago, from a small and poor village in China. Who is he? He is my dear father, Mr Pan. “My childhood is dramatic and fascinating”, he said. Let’s get back to around forty years ago, at Xinyang, a small undeveloped town at the central part of China. At that time, Mr Pan was a little boy, and it was the right time for him to attend primary school for formal education. Nevertheless, that was the poverty era for China, and his family could not afford his tuition fee of the school, so he did not have the opportunity to attend the typical school. But, meanwhile, he did not give up the chance to gain knowledge. He found out a chance if he could join the county drama troupe, he could be taught to play a specific instrument and get a decent salary from the troupe in the future when he can play individually. It could entirely solve his problems. Thus, he joined the troupe without hesitate. His life there was not bad. He got to know a lot of famous teachers and good friends there. Plus, surprisingly, he showed his extraordinary talent for playing Erhu. When he first tried to play Erhu, he fell in love with it. “It sounds dramatic, but I found the special tone colour from Erhu can comfort myself.” He looks joyful when he said this. From that moment, he paid a lot of effort into it and visited a lot of teachers in the town. Eventually, he became a famous Erhu player at the county, and people even could say he played the best Erhu in that region. “Nobody could teach me there, because I was the best.” He said this proudly. He was just eighteen and got a sense of achievement and happiness. It deepened his love for music, and he got a dream to become a great Erhu artist around the country, but things were not going very well soon. Since he married to my mother several years later, the stress from family became much harsher than before. Especially after my sister was born, Mr Pan needed to earn much more money to support the whole family. At the meantime, the economy was not stable, because of the period of Economic Reform and Open Up in China. Hence, his salary from the troupe cannot afford the expenses of the family. “I resigned from the troupe, sold my Erhu and went into business.” When he said this, he stopped his story here. The stress from life beaten himself on the way to his dream. His eyes became gloomy. It really hurt him. But at the same time, he set a new goal that he was wondering his children could have a better life than him. It means they can get a better education than himself and are able to chase their own dream in a stable society without stress from living. Fortunately, he was not eliminated from the economic instability. By contrast, he made his first barrel of gold during that time. The Economic Reform and Open Up is not only an economic instability but also an opportunity for people to make more money and climb up to another class. He did It, with unthinkable efforts, and the life of the family was getting better and better. Soon, he started to look forward to the future of his children when he had enough money to support his family. He did not forget the target he set when he was a stressful unemployed person. Several years ago, he travelled to the US to visit the greatest country that always been mentioned in international news. He found that American is entirely different compared with China. It is an inclusive country which means it welcomes immigration from different counties. And the immigrations here can live together and respect each other. Human rights got the best understanding here. People who lived here can get better educated than China and more chances to chase their dream without concerning about other things. It is because of the equal society and a stable economy. At that moment, he felt this is the right place for chasing the dream. Although he had given up his dream, he will never become a famous Erhu artist; he still decided to send his son to attend university in the US. He believed the stable society in the US could help his son realize his dream. And the son is me. Apparently, his son, me, is attending SJSU as an international student right now. I appreciate my dad can send me here to study sincerely. “I send you to American because I know you have your own dream. You love the computer, and I believe you can get achievements there. You can focus on your dream without caring for other things. You dad is your best patron, and I do not allow you to experience anything like me. I don’t want you to give up your dream because of an unstable society just like me. Don’t leave any regrets in your life.” He said this with shining eyes. I can feel his expectation for me. He hopes me can get a better life than him, and he believes I can succeed in the US.
