Bernie’s impressive animal welfare record deserves attention, may sway voters
It turns out Bernie is not only a man of the people. He’s a man of dogs, cats, horses, monkeys, etc. The Bern Man is a regular Doctor Doolittle who’s done a lot for our non-homosapien friends.
Where the presidential candidates stand on animal welfare has received little attention from the media, and this oversight is understandable given other pressing issues: income inequality, campaign finance reform, and overturning Citizens United, to name a few.
Bernie has received 100 percent ratings from the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF), which works to pass animal protection laws and supports candidates who do, and the Defenders of Wildlife, which seeks to protect wildlife in their natural habitats.
Bernie’s strong animal advocacy record is something the Sanders’ campaign needs to publicize because many Americans love their pets, consider them family members, and would gladly vote for a presidential candidate who feels the same.
And Bernie has a record of co-sponsoring animal-friendly legislation covering cruelty, breeding and captivity practices, livestock issues, and wildlife protection.

Once upon a time Bernie said that if he needed to name his campaign with one word this word would be “compassion”. I see this compassion throughout all of his work. I’m glad to know that he takes care of animals, too. I can’t help admiring him. Once again I will say that he’s the only possible presidential candidate today.
The Vegetarian Animal Rights Club is not currently endorsing any presidential candidate. We do admit to disagreeing with all of Trump’s proposed policies.
It disgusts me how some people think it’s easier to slaughter animals than it is to eat fruits and vegetables.

10 Lies Meat Eaters Tell Themselves
1. “People have always eaten meat and they always will.”
Sorry, but not true. Throughout human history, many cultures have eschewed meat. And just because something may have been done in the past doesn’t mean we should continue to do it. Move on.
2. “If I stop eating meat, it won’t make a difference.” It will to the more than 30 animals you save each year. All together, Americans ate 400 million fewer animals last year than we did just five years ago. Times are changing.
3. “We need to eat meat to get protein.” No, we don’t. Protein is abundant in plant foods. From nuts and beans to tofu and seitan, you don’t need meat for adequate protein. It’s a myth. The end.
4. “Animals on farms are treated humanely.” Not even close. Over 95 percent of animals raised and killed for food live miserable lives on factory farms: crowded, filthy facilities where animals are crammed in tiny cages, mutilated without painkillers, and ruthlessly slaughtered. Don’t believe it? Watch this.
5. “I don’t like vegan food.” So you don’t like french fries or pasta? What about peanut butter or chocolate? Please. You probably eat vegan food all the time and love it; you just don’t call it vegan. Click here for some amazing vegan recipes. They taste great!
6. “Being a vegan is unhealthy.” In reality, studies show that vegans have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Plant-based diets have also been clinically shown to be one of the best ways to lose weight and safeguard against obesity.
7. “Athletes need meat to be strong.” Riiiight… unless you’re Olympian Carl Lewis, tennis champion Serena Williams, or ultramarathoner Scott Jurek. The list of vegan athletes is impressive and long. Forget about it.
8. “My body needs meat.” No, it doesn’t. Re-read number six. Your body would actually do much better without it.
9. “If we stop eating meat, cows will take over the planet.” Seriously? It’s called supply and demand. If people stopped eating meat, farmers would stop breeding animals. It’s that simple.
10. “Factory farming is the only way to feed everyone.” Hold the phone. Not only is factory farming one of the leading causes of climate change; it’s also incredibly wasteful. It takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. Imagine how many people we could feed with that grain.
The majority of these animals will die before their 1st birthday. Give a plushie instead..!

Vegan Pesto Recipe
Ingredients:
Flesh of 2 large, ripe avocados
1 large bunch of fresh basil
⅓ cup/50g of whole raw cashews or pine nuts (raw just means unroasted and unsalted)
1 large garlic clove, peeled
1 tsp lemon zest plus juice of 1 lemon
2 tbsp olive oil
½ tsp sea salt
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes (Marigold Engivita – not to be confused with brewer’s yeast)
Method:
If you want the flavour of toasted nuts, gently roast them in a non-stick frying pan for a minute or two, stirring constantly as they catch and burn otherwise. Remove from the heat and transfer into a bowl (the heat from the pan will continue to cook them otherwise).
Alternatively, use the nuts raw.
Remove about a quarter of the basil from the pack/bunch. Snip it into smallish rough pieces with scissors and set aside.
Place the nuts, garlic, avocados, lemon juice, olive oil, yeast flakes and three quarters of the pack of basil into the food processor or blender. Do this for about 30 seconds but use short blasts to pulse the ingredients, don’t just let it run. This stops the nuts from turning into paste!
Stir in the snipped basil and lemon zest. Mix in.
Toss the noodles in the pesto and serve.
