Edmund Kemper was the last person police suspected of being the violent serial killer they were looking for. For one, Edmund was known as a reformed individual and the gentle giant of the community. Although he had been to a correctional facility for killing his grandparents when he was fifteen years old, everyone in town was shocked at his dry wit and his generous personality. He also won over his psychologist while serving time in the correctional facility, who believed that Edmund was a model prisoner and even granted his early release. As the murders of 1972 to 1973 became more and more frequent, police were out of their depth. Kemper, an intelligent man with an IQ of around 145, knew he had to stay one step ahead of the police so he began to befriend the local police officers. He was a regular drinker at a bar called The Jury Room, which was coincidentally the local watering hole of many of the officers. Kemper, who was actively killing young co-eds at the time, openly discussed the cases with the police and offered his help. None of them suspected that ‘Big’ Ed Kemper was responsible for such atrocious crimes.

Erik Galen Menendez and Joseph Lyle Menendez a.k.a. The Menendez Brothers grew up in Princeton, New Jersey before moving to California. Lyle was born on January 10th 1968 and Erik was born on November 27th 1971. On August 29th 1989, their parents Jose and Kitty were watching The Spy Who Loved Me in the den of their $4 million Beverly Hills mansion when Erik and Lyle burst in armed with shotguns. Jose was first shot in the arm before one of his sons shot him in the head. Kitty was shot in both legs and the left breast while crawling away. The brothers ran out of ammunition so they left to reload in the driveway. They returned to their mother crawling toward them, put the gun to her left cheek, and shot.

After changing clothes and dumping the weapons on Mulholland Drive, in order to create an alibi, they decided to go to the movies to see Batman. They returned to the house and at 11:47pm Lyle called 911 and cried “They shot and killed my parents!”

After their parents’ deaths they started spending lots of money, about $1 million in 6 months. Finally on October 31, Erik confessed to his psychiatrist who went to the police. The brothers were arrested on March 8, 1990. During the July 1993 trial Erik’s lawyer claimed that their parents had sexually abused the boys. The defence almost worked and the trial ended in 2 deadlocked juries on January 25th 1994. A second trial began on October 11th 1995 and they were both convicted on March 20th 1996 of two counts of first degree murder plus conspiracy to commit murder. They were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the world’s most notorious serial killers. Born May 21st, 1960 in West Allis, Wisconsin, he had a fascination with cutting up and examining dead animals from an early age. His father is quoted as saying “There was something missing in Jeff… we call it a conscience.”

He had a normal child hood and grew up in a middle-class family. There has never been any connection made as to what made Jeffrey into the “Milwaukee Monster” he became known for. He may be the best example we have of a natural born killer. His first victim was 19 year old hitchhiker Stephen Hicks on June 6th 1978. After a few drinks Hicks wanted to leave, so Dahmer smashed his head in with a barbell. He cut the body up and put it into 5 garbage bags. While he was transporting it in his car he was pulled over by a policeman for a traffic violation. He did not kill again for 9 years. His spree lasted until July 22, 1991 when his final victim escaped and ran handcuffed into the arms of police.

In February 1992 he was sentenced to 957 years in prison. On November 28th, 1994, at the Columbia Correctional Facility at Portage Wisconsin, Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered by another inmate who caved in his head in the prison gym, with the same type of weapon Dahmer had used on his first victim. His body was cremated but his mother asked that his brain be studied. It was found to be normal.

Alexander Yuryevich Pichushkin a.k.a. The Chessboard Killer was born April 9th 1974 in Mytishchi, Moscow. His first murder was committed when he was 18 years old in 1992. He killed Sergei, the boyfriend of Olga, the neighbour he had fallen in love with. Police dismissed the murder as a suicide.

Alex began killing in 2001 and was responsible for at least 48 deaths by the time he was finished, possibly over 60. Pichushkin, who was a supermarket worker who lived with his elderly mother, originally said he wanted to kill 64 people, the number of squares on a chessboard. His weapon of choice was a hammer. According to police he would record each murder by marking it on a square of a chessboard.

He was arrested June 15th 2006 after police found a metro ticket in the pocket of his last victim. He denied knowing her until police showed him CCTV footage of the two of them together. Pichushkin told police that killing people was akin to a “perpetual orgasm.” His trial began on September 13, 2007 and on October 24th of that year he was convicted of 48 murders and 3 attempted murders. From his class cage he demanded another 11 murders to be taken into account. The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment with the first 15 years to be spent in solitary confinement.
