Twitter thread by Melissa Caruso about a labyrinthine magical bookstore in Syracuse, NY. Link to the first tweet in the thread; most pictures have image descriptions! Now here are the screenshots of that thread:
And then a hero of the labyrinthine magical bookstores of the world put all the bookstores that people listed in the replies on a map! (Google Maps link)
This place has the vibe of: I'm checking an empty suitcase on the flight I've booked to NY and I am coming home with nothing but books. If I don't make it back just tell them that I disappeared doing what I loved -- staring at thousands of books in awe, walking the labyrinth of knowledge with at least a stack of six books in my arms (why yes my wrists arent happy but shhh, books), and wondering if the owner would let me live there.
i love when a character has something terrible happen to them and as a result they see themself as, essentially if not literally, a ghost. and so that means they only can (and have to) do what ghosts do, ie get revenge and then cease to exist. easy as that. but then halfway through this ghost vengeance they realize hey actually i might still be a human person. with human needs. thatâs incredibly inconvenient, considering how much iâve invested in this whole ghost thing
Call me conspiratorial, but when I see the brightly-coloured Instagram posts encouraging me to cut off my friends and focus on myself, I canât help but notice a convenient side effect of isolation: it forces us to rely on paid relationships in order to grow. The relationship between you and your therapist is transactional and safe, free of the messiness of attachment or stakes or love. And there are times, to be sure, when that can be a very useful relationship to have. But a serious issue arises when professional, unattached relationships are positioned as a replacement (or a requirement) for fulfilling, challenging, passionate ones. When people say that one ought to go to therapy to become a perfectly stable, functional, âhealedâ individual before they dare try to experience love or community, they are imagining a world in which a fundamental purpose of human connection has been replaced with a capital exchange. Welcome to the ideal relationship: one between two perfectly realized individuals who would be totally fine alone but choose to hang out because they like splitting rent and watching Law and Order. No passion, no growth, no difficult conversations â thatâs your therapistâs job.

There is more and more I tell no one, strangers nor loves. This slips into the heart without hurry, as if it had never been.
And yet, among the trees, something has changed.
Something looks back from the trees, and knows me for who I am.

[...] one is reminded of the interesting element to Albert Speerâs otherwise utterly banal âTheory of Ruin Valueâ. Not the bluster over the impressiveness of ancient ruins, and the need to leave similarly imposing remains. Rather, the psychotic, suicidal notion of building with the ruins already in mind: a death-drive architecture, where posterityâs opinion is internalised to such a ludicrous degree that, in a sense, the corpse has been designed before the living body.

âWith dispassionate despair, with entire disillusionment, I surveyed the dust dance; my life, my friendsâ lives, and those fabulous presences, men with brooms, women writing, the willow tree by the river - clouds and phantoms made of dust too, of dust that changed, as clouds lose and gain and take gold or red and lose their summits and billow this way and that, mutable, vain.â

âYou need teaâ - you are having, or just had, a medical emergency. This tea will have like 3 sugars and milk in no matter how you normally take your tea.
