"We're not a believable couple," you say morosely.
Peter's arm twitches where it rests over your shoulders. "Are you kidding me?"
"No, I'm not kidding. I don't think anyone here is even slightly convinced," you say to him.
Your voice is somber and your smile is blinding. You and Pete stand in the kitchen of some friend of a friend's apartment, two weeks into a fake relationship and no further along your separate vendettas.
And it's awful, really awful, because the whole reason you're doing this is so Peter can make some girl from his Chemistry lecture hall jealous. You're a good friend, you tell yourself. You'll do anything he asks you to, which is a big part of the problem.
"You're being ridiculous. We're more than convincing."
He looks down. The height difference makes you feel small in the chest-dizzying way, always wondering if he's going to lean down.
"Danny hasn't looked over here in an hour. I'm tired. Can we go get McDonald's?"
"Did you bring money?" he asks, jostling your shoulders.
"No," you say, smiling at him with your biggest, best doe eyes.
"You're fleecing me," he grumbles.
"You're fleecing me!" you protest. "You realise there are other things I could be doing with my Friday night?"
"Like what?" he asks amusedly, big brown eyes skeptical.
Why is he looking at you like that?
"I don't know. Like eating McDonald's."
"How can you eat it if I'm not there paying for it?"
"I have money."
"Could've fooled me."
You shrug out from under his shoulders, ignoring the rest of the room to settle a burning glare at him. You're mostly kidding.
"I could afford McDonald's if I didn't spend more money on gauze than a private hospital, mister vigilante."
He looks over your shoulder, a quick, fleeting glance, and you still.
"Is she looking?" you ask.
"Who?"
"Danny! Idiot, the whole reason we're here." You catch something on his face. "Peter…"
"She left," he says, looking guilty.
You turn around and sure enough, Danny and the cool girl entourage have left. "Oh. When?"
"I'm not sure. Like a half hour ago?" he informs you, scratching the back of his neck.
"Then why are we here?" you groan.
"I just…"
You narrow your eyes at him. "What?"
"Would you believe me if I said I wanted a little more time with you under my arm?"
You glare at him and choose to ignore his jokes. "I want a big mac. And a milkshake."
He sighs and reaches out to ruffle your hair. "Whatever you want."
You smile. He smiles back. Being his fake girlfriend is easy.
