I want more thunderstorm
last night was so richly needed
yesterday I went to a charity shop for the first time in yonks. was just bored I guess, and there's a few things in my mind that I have on a list to find. and, I like strange and unusual things and mysteries. it was a fruitful decision!
first, an item that I wasn't looking for and didn't even realise existed... I like odd things so I brought this deck of playing cards home— the image was strange, I looked it up and it's a freemason thing Lol. The anagram says 'FATAL' which is a bit... intense
I guess it's a mason-affiliated group called Order of the Eastern Star
this is their 'logo' or device (from wiki, card above is my own scan)
"The emblem of the Order is a five-pointed star with the white ray of the star pointing downwards towards the manger. The meaning of the letters FATAL surrounding the center pentagon in the emblem is only revealed to members of the Order."
really playing fast and loose with the sort of sinister tokens there (the 5 pt. upside down is associated with 'satanic' whatevers, being a shape of a goat's head and all that stuff and such, and no I am not afraid of such things)
but none of my concern... and I have never been involved in any sort of those secret societies. I have my own coven, after all
next: the books, which I know a lot of my tumbly circle are devoted to books as I am
I actually found a copy of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca!! I have wanted to pick up a copy for yonks, and it's been on my 'when the opportunity arises' list to collect all of her novels. Rebecca - 1940 the film is one of my favourites. Pleased that there was actually a copy in this city. kind of blew my mind if I'm being candid
so, two du Maurier books, including this one which I wasn't consciously aware of, and would be more than happy to pay 4s for
then, this one also blew my mind. I love Shirley Jackson very much, I've been collecting her novels for many years whenever I come across one. But this isn't anything I've seen before— it's a 1953 one-act play based on The Lottery! so wild man... not a common thing to come upon
I have already scanned the pages so once I've prepared the scans properly later I plan on sharing it here for anyone else who enjoys that sort of thing. It's only a small little document, 26 pages
then, this 1964 tourist booklet for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery documenting Sir Walter Scott and his comrades, through their portraiture. I like these sort of items, vintage souvenir booklets from museums and attractions. Sir Scott often crosses my path and I live in a city that has a link with him
this one is very sweet... it's a hardcover 1945 illustrated copy of John Steinbeck's The Red Pony. I haven't looked at it much yet but I feel I will enjoy reading it (my inner horse mad child will, at least)
just some more du Maurier images
I also got a few other items but those are the standouts
it made me happy that I was able to find some things that have been long on my seeking list. I got some beautiful fabric too, a wee purse and vintage leather wallet with western style tooling on, I remember those. They were all the rage at a time. I do NOT need more clothing but I couldn't resist a couple of good quality soft cotton t-shirts too. can always use those
there were some other strange cards too, they're like tarot cards but have no major arcana and are presented as just... a deck of regular cards. so strange, no idea what they're for
what else... oh, I got 3 more Nancy Drew mysteries (trying to complete an entire set just for the sake that I loved them when I was a child... I re-read them during the pandemic on the digital book device, they gave me a lot of comfort)
feel like I'm forgetting something but anyway. It was a lot of fun and I'm so glad to have found a copy of Rebecca!
oh there was a vintage hardback in pristine condition of another book called Green Mansions but I've never heard of it so I don't really have anything to say about it at the moment. It's a jungle story or something

there is something supernatural taking place here that we are not understanding.
