Interview highlights
He talks about the various productions he’s worked on in 2017 from Host-chan to Haikyuu to Touken Ranbu. Host-chan was difficult because it’s such a different style to the other plays he’s worked on, but he found the audience participation to be actually really helpful. Touken Ranbu was difficult because it was a 3-hour play and having to concentrate for that long was challenging, but he really enjoyed doing the fight scenes. Both Haikyuu plays demand so much physically, which has always been true, but he thinks how much Kenta helps pull them all through it.
When he first met his co-star (Kagimoto Akira) for his upcoming play (Gifuu Doudou), they first discussed what they should call each other. Maybe Ino-chan or Inocchi?
After turning 25, he’s learned to ease up on a bit and not stress too much over every little thing.
He doesn’t like the steady, consistent path. He still wants to experience more things for himself (both as an actor and for his continued growth as a person).
He’s also looking forward to the Oofuri stage at the beginning of next year. In his reading of the manga, he finds it to be full of genuine, realistic emotions and therefore finds it very easy to immerse himself in the world.
When asked how he wants to present himself to the world, he says that he’s not a genius. The world of entertainment isn’t one that’s just full of geniuses or people with that potential. So long as he can make another person see his efforts and think to themselves, ‘I also have to do my best,’ then that’s good enough for him.
He wants his relationship with his fans to be an honest one. He just wants to frankly be himself and not put on any personas or create any distances, but to just show who he really is.
