Do you know where we could buy modernized hanfu or anything similar?

Hi, thanks for the question!

I have several posts on wear to buy modernized/modified hanfu here, here, and here - please check them out! 

The best place to buy modified hanfu is on Taobao, which offers the most choices. The keywords you should use to search are: 1) 汉元素/Hanyuansu and 2) 改良汉服/Gailiang Hanfu. Hanyuansu means “(Clothing with) Han elements”, and “Gailiang Hanfu” means “Reformed Hanfu”, but practically they refer to the same thing. To offer some guidance, here are 5 of my recommendations for brands with modified hanfu designs (click name for link to Taobao shop):

1. Chuan Dai/川黛 - My personal favorite brand for modified hanfu, Chuan Dai offers a large variety of clean, flowy, and feminine designs. You can check out my Chuan Dai/川黛 tag to see more from its collections. Having purchased an outfit from here before, I can vouch for the quality:

2.  Zhi Yu Ji/织羽集 - The personal brand of famous Chinese actress Xu Jiao, who tends to take more creative risks with her collections. The outfits can be a hit or miss for me, but the more subtle designs can be quite chic:

3. Hua Xiao Xia/华小夏 - The spin-off label of well-known hanfu brand Chonghui Hantang/重回汉唐, whose quality I can also vouch for. Its designs are characterized by simplicity and lightness:

4. Chi Xia/池夏 - This brand offers designs for those looking for a bit more edge to their modified hanfu outfits:

5. Lu Yun Ji/鹿韵记 - Those who favor more cutesy and girly designs should definitely check out this shop (it has hanfu lolita outfits too):

6. Celestial Spring/诗礼春秋 - Sleek, minimalist designs that seamlessly meld hanfu elements with modern silhouettes:

STOP BRUSHING OUT CURLY HAIR 2k19!!!

I hate this, because almost no one knows it. No one tells kids with curly hair how to actually take care of their hair.

You can’t treat curly hair like straight hair and expect the same results! You can’t! It doesn’t work! Curly hair gets its own routine! 

Okay, look, here’s the deal.

Your curls are… curls. They are MEANT to go together into a GROUP. They are not like straight hair which just hands out in one big… thing. Curls have groups.

By BRUSHING it, you are splitting those good-curl groups into separate strands, which, on their own, are STILL trying their goddamned best to curl, but now that they are away from their friends, they are only clinging haphazardly to each other as best as they can and creating tangles!

Here’s what brushed curly hair looks like:

Here’s what well-treated curly hair that has CURL-FRIENDS is supposed to look like (curl size may vary):

See how the curl is NOT only one strand of hair? It’s a whole group!

You know how you get those nice curls?

STOP BRUSHING.Give your curls back their curl-friends!

Okay, here’s the deal - you sit down. You look at this chart. Figure out your type of curl. (guesstimate)

And now you go to this website and you read about what curly hair actually needs to thrive, and you change your routine, and you promise me that you will NEVER disappoint your curls like that again!!!! 

Basics:

1) Curly hair is damaged by heat, lack of moisture, and sulfates in shampoo. 

 - No blowdrying - use a cotton towel or t-shirt to scrunch your hair and get extra moisture out, and allow to air-dry

 - Turn down the shower temp while washing hair. I mean it.

 - Try to find a better shampoo.

2) Curly hair NEEDS moisture, and it NEEDS leave-in conditioner.

 - Use lots of conditioner.

 - Use leave-in conditioner

 - Try to use water spray over chemical setting sprays. 

3) Curly hair does not need to be brushed, only combed with a wide-tooth comb.

 - Comb the hair through with your fingers while in the shower and detangle while you have conditioner in. 

 - Comb again with a wide-toothed comb after the shower if needed

 - If you need to, use a twist of some sort to keep hair out of the way, but don’t squeeze it too much - give it room to breathe!

More tips from smarter people probably exist but that’s the basic stuff.

also STAY AWAY FROM SILICONES IN YOUR CONDITIONER

if your conditioner has silicones in it, it costs your hair in fake moisture and prevents your hair from keeping and obtaining more moisture. curly hair is naturally DRY and NEEDS PROPER HYDRATION

do not use shampoos with sulfates or conditioners with silicones

& only use a wide toothed comb

A lot of people are really scared and angry because of the results of the newest climate change reports — as they should be. But I’m already seeing a lot of posts and news reports like “HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING” and bizarrely enough, the answers are never like “weed out climate change deniers from your government, impose strict new rules for the corporations that are  creating most of the emissions, pour government resources into alternate forms of fuel, etc.” It’s always like “carpool to work!”

Look. Of course you should be working to reduce waste in your own life. But let’s not fucking pretend that consumers are the ones who made this mess. You know what another recent study found? Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions. If the rest of us stopped ALL WASTE and fucking ascended to a higher plane of existence that no longer requires consumption of any kind, the world would still be absolutely fucked if those 100 companies keep on as they do.

I hate this personal responsibility model when it comes to conservation. By ignoring the actual source of the problem and focusing on individuals instead, guess who gets targeted? The absolute most vulnerable individuals on the planet. When people advocate personal responsibility, somehow they’re never talking about billionaires and their private jets. They’re creating straw bans that will make life more dangerous for people with disabilities. They’re shaming women for using disposable menstrual products. They’re criticizing the poor and destitute for using “wasteful” products because they’re all they can afford. They’re making vaguely eugenic statements about getting people in “third world countries” to stop ~breeding~ so much. It’s monstrous.

Stop shaming consumers for the sins of corporations and their powerful investors. Stop placing the blame at the feet of the people who already have the hardest time getting through life. Do something, and by “do something” I mean buy a reusable coffee cup on the way to fucking vote. Go to a protest. Call a representative. Demand accountability from the people who got us into this mess.
