Here’s chapter 1 of a short fic I’m making

Recent field data indicate a decline in local pokemon population. In light of your demonstrated capabilities and prior performances, your skill set has been deemed well-suited to support this investigation.

Goh scrolled down—there was still more! Had his hard work and diligence finally been recognized? Will he finally be get a solo assignment like Danika and Quillion?

Goh, Your assigned partner on this mission will be Mr. Oak. Consider this partnership as a direct consequence of the conduct displayed by both parties during the last meeting.

You are expected to maintain professional behavior throughout the duration of the mission. Failure to do so will result in both of you being prohibited in participating in the next expedition locating mew.

Project Mew operates as a team. This assignment is intended to address and resolve any existing tension between the two of you.

This decision is not open for objection.

“Cinderace, we are not bringing that.” His bag was already stuffed to the brim with his clothes and other essentials needed for a week of travel.

“We don’t have the money to pay for the additional bag fee-“

His partner just stared at him with beady eyes.

Goh sighed and grabbed another bag to shove the soccer ball into. He didn’t have the energy to argue—he’d be dealing with the great Gary Oak for an entire week.

Honestly, he would’ve preferred awkward small talk with Danika or enduring Quillion’s judgmental glares than dealing with Gary’s everything.

With his luggage in hand, goh yells a quick goodbye to his parents, still passed out on the couch after pulling an all-nighter.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree they say.

Oh.

Gary was on his phone, but what immediately caught goh’s attention was his outfit—and how unfairly well it fit him like it was tailored for his body. Winter attire. Clean. And probably very expensive.

Goh’s gaze drifted up to the boy’s face—naturally a smug smirk was plastered there.

The man was dressed to impress.

Which made absolutely no sense since they were going to Alola

Goh couldn’t help it—he laughed.

“Well, well,well,” he drawled. “Gary Oak, ready to brave a snowstorm or something?”

He stifled another laugh. Oh this was good.

“Yes, Goh, Indeed I am.” Gary replied flatly, finally looking up from his phone.

He raided an eyebrow as he swept over Goh’s beach-y attire. He even wore shades.

“You’re planning to wear that to Snowbelle City?”

He stepped closer until he was face to face with the boy wearing shades.

Goh shoots Gary with a sharp glare before pulling his lips into a smile. “Did you even read the email sent by the professor?”

“Did you?” Gary gave him a slow once-over then typed something into his phone. “We’ll be stationed in Sinnoh—specifically in snowbelle city. Which if you weren’t aware—is covered in snow.”

He turned the screen at him, eyes glinting.

“What-“ Goh read the email, and Gary’s smirk widened.

Okay.

Goh was 100% sure the email said Alola. Professor Amaranth must’ve made a mistake! “I’ll message professor Amaranth and-“

Gary interrupts him, slinging an arm around his shoulders. “There’s no need for that. Check the tickets. we’re flying to Sinnoh.”

“But—“

“You pulled an all-nighter again, didn’t you?”

“Yes, but don’t interrupt me again or I’ll make sure neither of us goes on the next expedition on finding mew!” Goh shoves the arm away and rummages his bag for the ticket. He had to double check!

“Don’t worry, goh.” Gary said lightly. “If you get cold, you could always borrow my jacket.”

Then…he winked.

“I predicted this would happen anyways, so I brought a spare.”

“What do you mean predicted” Goh scoffed

“Always ill prepared,goh”

“Screw you, oak!” He shoved past him and boarded the plain.

And screw professor Amaranth for subjecting him to this torture.

As the other passengers settled in their seats; Gary took a seat across the aisle—thank arceus—and Goh’s phone buzzed.

Hellooo!! I’m a huge fan of your pokemon fics!! I’ve read most of them. You’re definitely one of my fav writers in this fandom.

The idea of goh doing pokemon contests first came to me after I watched the pinsir and heracross episode (I can’t recall the name of the ep) He dresses pinsir with flowers and had grookey use grassy terrain to level up the look and I was like “Wow! This boy could probably do well in pokemon contests.” Everything kind of grew from there.

Honestly, the decision of making goh a coordinator/conestant was very self-indulgent. Given goh’s character, I doubt he would sign himself up to enter a contest under normal circumstances. He would need A LOT of convincing to entertain the idea, similar to what we see in the anime with project mew and that pokemon battle contest with ash (if im not mistaken, ash was the one to sign them both up? Im not suree I haven’t revisited the anime yet, and it’s been a LONG time since I’ve watched it)

However, I do feel he would give it a try if one of his pokemon showed interest. In the au I’m cooking up I was thinking of raboot being this pokemon. Goh would notice it lingering near contest broadcasts and practicing flashy moves, and he’d push himself to try contests as a last-resort attempt to restore their bond—since my au is very kinda canon divergent where some events that happened in the anime never occurred:))

I feel Goh wouldn’t be participating for himself or because he want the stage ykyk, but because he wants to understand his pokemon and form a deeper connection with them…at least initially mwahhahaha
