Let’s face it: the Fight Game walks the fine line between goodness and corruption.
The good is that young men have an opportunity to learn discipline they would often not find elsewhere. For that to work, the people providing the chance need to have their heart in the right place. They need to be people like Jim Finley. Sadly, we have already forgotten just how special Finley and his boxing gym truly were.
Finley, who died of congestive heart failure on January 28, ran the legendary Finley’s Boxing Gym from 1960 to 2001. The gym was over his auto repair shop on 518 10th Street, which sat in an alley running between 9th and 10th Streets in Northeast D.C. So low key was the gym that I lived at the entrance of that alley for two years after it closed, yet had no idea it ever existed.Â

Strictly speaking, the March 8th Showtime Pay Per View card headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo “el Perro” Angulo is a bit outside our wheelhouse. It’s in Las Vegas and doesn’t feature any of the East Coast fighters we follow closely. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be plunking down our $60 to watch (and cover) the show. Judging on entertainment value alone, this might be the best Pay Per View card of the year.
The main event features two fighters coming off losses and desperate to re-assert themselves as top names at 154 lbs. Throw in the fact that el Perro has never been in a boring fight, and you’ve got a recipe for success. The other three televised fights promise to be similarly action-packed: Leo Santa Cruz vs. Christian Mijares at featherweight, rising unbeaten Jermall Charlo vs. contender Carlos Molina at junior middleweight, and exciting lightweight Omar Figueroa vs. Canelo’s brother Ricardo Alvarez.Â

Is it already Friday? So it is. Here’s what we’re reading at Stiff Jab headquarters:
1) This story about the first “cutwoman” in The UFC is well-worth a read. After eight years of preparation, research, and unpaid practice, Swayze Valentine participated in UFC 170 in Las Vegas. Her journey to the octagon hasn’t been easy:
"Then there were the struggles of being a woman in a man’s sport. Valentine said she has been physically assaulted by a manager, not let in the cage by security guards and banished from dressing rooms by fighters."
2) Many fight fans and boxers are on Twitter, and most wish for the magic blue check mark. The latest to be verified? None other than Muhammad Ali, who chose the 50th anniversary of his fight with Sonny Liston to tweet:
"I shook up the world against Liston, now 50 years later I’m taking it to Twitter."
Note: any tweet hashtagged “#AliTweet” is from the man himself. What are you waiting for— follow him already!
3) The Nevada Athletic Commission voted Thursday to ban testosterone replacement therapy, commonly known as “TRT”. Many in the sport (including Doc Octagon) felt that fighters were getting over by claiming they needed TRT due to their low testosterone levels.
"There is also a prevailing opinion in the medical world, testified to by commission doctors at Thursday’s meeting, that many cases of low testosterone in fighters were caused by prior use of performance-enhancing drugs."

VENEZUELA IS ON THE BRINK OF A CIVIL WAR AND CLOSE TO BECOMING A FULL COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP. THEIR PEOPLE NEED YOUR HELP. —— Please, this is very important to me, one of my closest friends went to visit family in Venezuela over winter break and they won’t let him come back to Florida. We’re graduating in a few months and it hurts me to know that his baseball career and all of his hard work and dedication to his grades here in the U.S. was all for nothing. Please.

one of my friends is in the middle of this shit right now and it’s terrifying, she said their twitters are getting blocked so they can’t share info, their murder rate is the second highest in the world and none of the murderers go to jail because they’re government supporters, they can’t find basic household items or food in their supermarkets, their economy has plummeted, inflation increased over 50% in the two months since 2014 started, airlines have basically left the country because the govt owes them so much money, they have no access to cars or car parts, they can’t cross any borders because their govt controls them and no one is helping them. it is fucking pissing me off that no one is helping them when they’re asking for it and need it so much. And I am so frustrated that theres not more I can do than share things like this to spread the word, that I just have to hope enough people see it that something gets done.

Dusty Harrison vs Michael Balasi March 7 on ESPN

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Members of the press studied the candied bacon and chicken wings from Founding Farmers, just across Pennsylvania Avenue. P.R. pros confidently wove through the small crowd, shaking hands and offering guests Starbucks coffee.
At the front of a glass conference room here in Northwest D.C., 2012 Stiff Jab Prospect of the Year Dusty Hernandez-Harrison stood silently, uncharacteristically alone. Dusty used the time to collect his thoughts before addressing the reporters who had gathered to hear about his next bout against Michael Balasi (10-3, 7 KOs) on March 7th in San Diego on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.
If there was one overarching theme from today’s press conference, it’s that DUSTY LOVES THE DMV. I’m surprised there aren’t already shirts bearing that slogan, printed and circulating among the thousands of local fight fans who are down for Dusty. From All-In Entertainment President Jeff Fried to Dusty’s father Buddy Harrison to the young boxer himself, every person who spoke wanted to emphasize that Dusty’s favorite aspect of being a local star is the “local”, not the “star”.

Here’s a little test run of something that makes me really happy…finding obscure photos from World War II. And only the sickest and most compelling will do. I recently discovered a feed on here that was a complete gold mine. I haven’t even reached the end yet and started saving some of my favorites. One thing I look for in World War II photography is the horror level. Most of the propaganda that was released didn’t show burnt bodies and mangled remains, mass executions and equipment failures…they showed their side winning the war. And photographs of really nasty things were suppressed, to make people think that maybe war wasn’t as horrible as they imagined. The problem is, war is far worse than anyone can imagine.
But photos from private collections are popping up all the time and every day I am blown away by the new imagery I find. World War II was the sickest event in history and it needs to be remembered as such. I hope you enjoy these.
DMX vs George Zimmerman Cancelled, Boxing Avoids Rock Bottom

After considerable public outrage, the “celebrity” boxing match between once-relevant hip-hop artist DMX (arf arf arf!) and George Zimmerman was cancelled this weekend.
On Saturday, promoter Damon Feldman announced that beyond the angry outcry against the tasteless spectacle, he personally was receiving threats over the proposed bout— so much so that he has hired a bodyguard for protection.
Our hearts go out to this innocent boxing promoter who was just trying to help Zimmerman earn an…honest paycheck after the acquitted killer of Florida teen Trayvon Martin became too notorious to work at any job. Feldman’s tweets regarding the matter show a promoter who was rattled by the overwhelmingly negative response to his involvement with the infamous “Stand Your Ground”-killer:
