an anon asked me how i make my gifs, so i’ve decided to do a gif tutorial (this will probably be long, but i’m trying to be as thorough as possible)
in this tutorial, i’ll take you through my gif making process so you can make something like this:
programs needed:
adobe photoshop (any version - i use cc but learned on cs5)
kmplayer
i will include download links for both of these at the end
please like or reblog if you find this useful
before you start you’ll need to acquire your footage somehow — i torrent the episodes (or movies/other media) using this site, if you don’t know how to torrent, message me privately or just google it. remember that your gifs look best if you use high quality scenes, so 720p or 1080p (and web-dl is also good)
part one: frames
now, you can just do an import — video frames to layers method, but i find it quite messy, so what i do is:
a) open kmplayer and find the scene you want to gif:
i’m giffing from the first episode of turn and i’ve paused at the start of my scene:
now, i usually start capping a few frames before the scene i like, just to make sure i get as many as possible, in case the scene ends up being very short, but i’m not going to bother right now
b) open frame extraction
press CTRL+G to open up this window:
you’re settings will probably be different, so just copy mine, though if you want change the extraction location like i do
whichever you do, remember the location!
(you really don’t want to go chasing down frames, especially because they take up space, i can’t tell you how much space i freed up on my computer by deleting old lost frames)
c) hit the start button, and unpause the video
the frames will automatically extract into whatever folder you’ve put from the above step. you should see a message saying ‘start continuous capture’
if you look at where it says ‘information’ you can see how many frames you’ve extracted so far
when you’ve gotten all all you need just hit stop and then close the frame extraction
d) check out your new frames in the folder you extracted to and delete any extras you may have collected:
and now to part two
part two: importing the frames
a) open photoshop (if you haven’t already)
b) go to file and then to scripts
c) and then click the ‘load multiple DICOM files...’ option
(note: you can also choose load files into stack, but it takes a lot longer to import the frames, this way is far quicker)
it will open a window that looks like this:
change the folder destination to wherever you saved your frames before then hit ok/enter and wait for the frames to import (it shouldn’t take long at all)
part three: turning frames into a gif
so now this is what you should see:
a) hit the create frame animation button down in the timeline
your timeline will end up like this:
b) down where it says once, click and choose forever
c) over to the right you’ll see this button
click it and then select make frames from layers
this is the result:
d) highlight all the frames (click the first frame, hold shift, click the last frame) and click down where it says 0 sec.
select other and a window like this will pop-up
change the delay to 0.05
the timeline should look like this now:
e) now highlight the layers like you did the frames above
and press CTRL+ALT+C and a window should pop up:
change the width and height — i use the old gif dimensions, but change it to suit you
this message should pop up, just hit proceed
and then this is what you should see:
f) hit CTRL+T so we can resize the frames
where it says w: 100.00%, h: 100.00% change it, making sure width and height are the same (important!!!) — tip: hit that little link button, it keeps them the same
changing it to 20.00% might be too small for yours, just adjust until the frames fit onto the canvas like so:
hit the little check button or just hit enter
part not actually a part but an interlude:
it’s about now that i always choose to save the file, just hit CTRL+SHIFT+S or find ‘save file as’ under file
now at this point, you could also just save the gif and be done with it, and your gif would look like this:
(though without the watermark)
if that’s what you want, skip to part six: saving, if not, continue down
part four: colouring
i usually don’t create a new colouring for each gifset, and i’m not going to share my own colouring, but i’ll show you how you can use someone else’s (here is where you can find psds)
so you’ll usually see a folder labelled something like ‘psd’, ‘colouring’, etc.
all you need to do is right click on it, hit duplicate group
and this should pop up
when it does, change the document destination to your document
go back to your document and you should see the group
[top without colouring, bottom with colouring]
and now your gif should be coloured
part four point five: subtitles
if you’re not interested in subtitles, just move onto part five: sharpening
a) click on the type tool
and create a line of text
these are my settings
b) on the text layer, open blending options
(i usually just double click the layer but you can right click, blending options)
go to stroke, tick the box, and these are my settings (the colour isn’t very important)
then do these with drop shadow
c) to make sure your text is aligned to the centre, hit CTRL+A
it should now look like this (don’t worry, there aren’t lines on your gif now)
then up the top, you’ll see these options
click on the second from the right
this is what your gif will look like now
part five: sharpening
now to my favourite part, sharpening
a) convert timeline to video timeline
by clicking this:
now it should look like this:
b) convert the layers for smart filters
by hitting filter and then ‘convert for smart filters’
the layers should be one file now
c) you can now add a smart sharpen to this layer!
[top without sharpen, bottom with sharpen]
d) duplicate the layer
and add a gaussian blur
then set the layer to 30% opacity (or 20% if it looks better)
[top sharpen without blur, bottom sharpen and blur]
part six: saving
this is quite simple, all you have to do is hold CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+S (or find save for web in file) and you’ll get this:
make sure you use these save settings (AND SET LOOPING OPTIONS TO FOREVER)
then just hit save and your gif is ready
thanks for sticking with this really long tutorial!
hi there, i just wanted to apologise for not posting anything lately - i have a few sets in my drafts, but unfortunately i lost all my turn episodes a few nights ago and i haven’t been able to make more, and i want to release my other sets at a steadier pace, so until i can get my episodes back, i probably won’t post anything original, thank you for sticking around though :)
