She nearly jumps at the sight of someone else, gaze darting between him and the couch as if EMBARRASSED by the state of things — and she is.

“New dog.” She says as explanation, eyes moving skyward with the lie. “Totally ruined the new sofa.” But she neglects to state she needs HELP getting it down the stairs.
