Harsh truth.
Raging Grannies at the Stop Dakota Access Pipeline demonstration in San Francisco August 24. Hats, scarves, and berets kept us warm in the chilly city! We stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux who have stopped construction of a dangerous oil pipeline that runs very close to their tribal lands.
The tribe is suing federal regulators for approving permits for the Dakota Access Pipeline that will move oil from North Dakota to Illinois. Standing Rock members say the pipeline’s route under the Missouri River could threaten its water supplies if the pipeline leaks or breaks. The chairman of the tribe said the Corps of Engineers failed to do proper consultation with his tribe before granting federal approvals for the pipeline.
“RAGING GRANNIES ACTION LEAGUE”?!?! AMAZING
‘For as long as it takes’: Native American protesters defy North Dakota pipeline construction
“Montoya, a 22-year-old member of the Lipan Apache tribe from San Francisco, is part an influx of Native American and environmental activists from all over the country who have gathered in the remote part of the state to take a stand against the $3.7bn North Dakota Access Pipeline, which tribal members say threatens to pollute drinking water and damage sacred sites
In recent years, there have been a string of indigenous actions against oil pipelines in the US and Canada, but this one is already attracting especially broad support. On Facebook, Jon Eagle Sr, the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer at the Standing Rock Reservation, affirmed that the Seven Council Fires of the Sioux Nation – representing all Sioux groups – had come together for the first time since 1876 over this issue. Tribal chairman Archambault called in a statement for “my fellow American citizens (to) stand with my people”.
Mossett thinks that Native American pipeline activism may be at a crossroads. “This is the first time that the tribes have been coming together in recent history.”
Watch: Heather McGhee had the best answer for CSPAN caller who wants to stop being prejudiced
Captions: 1 - I am a white male and I am prejudiced. It’s something I wasn’t taught, but it’s kind of something that I learned. 2 - I have these fears and I don’t want my fears to come true, you know? So I try to avoid that and I come off as being prejudiced. What can I do to change, you know? To be a better American? 3 -Thank you so much for being honest and for opening up this conversation because it’s simply one of the most important ones we need to have in this country. 4 - We are not a country that is united because we are all one racial group that descended from one tribe, one community. 5 - So what can you do? Get to know black families who are not at all, and not even any majority, involved in crime and gangs. 6 -Turn off the news and night … Nightly news in many media markets, that have been studied, over-represents African American crime and under-represents crime that happens by white people. 7 - Join a church, if you are a religious person, that is a black church or that is interracial. 8 -Start to read about the history of the African American community in this country. 9 - Foster conversation in your family and in your neighborhood where you are asking exactly those kinds of questions.

One could argue that yes, this happens to many women regardless of gender. But the layering of race is too critical to ignore here as just a minor component. Jones’s costars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon certainly haven’t been compared to a deceased silverback gorilla. Or referred to as “big-lipped coons.” Or been the target or a publicly coordinated attack by a Breitbart writer. Or any of the other vitriolic slurs that targeted not just Leslie’s gender, but her race, as well as her aesthetic existing on the outliers of what is viewed as traditionally beautiful for Hollywood elite. Jones has been forced to bear the brunt of the attacks herself, with limited public support (if any) from her costars, a circumstance, which, by her own admission, she is used to. An unfortunate reality for a Black woman with a certain level of exposure.

Is it really racist to say that black people can perceive something to be an act of racism when it actually has nothing to do with race?
Yes, and here’s why: though there might be some technical world in which this is true, shit like this is really only ever said by racists who believe that people of color are “oversensitive” instead of actually examining the effects of their racist beliefs. So, saying shit like this is like saying, “the moon might be made of fucking cheese, dogg.” Like, sure, I guess it might, but the chances of that being true are so small that saying this shit turns the conversation and focus to something, and forces normal, decent people to consider this dumb proposition like it’s a thing that has a high enough chance of matter that it has an effect on the real world.
Even now, see how much time you just fucking wasted on your fake-ass problem? Fuck off!
PSA for my fellow white people
Latino/Latina: originating from the Carribean, South or Central America. Gender neutral term (in English) is usually written as latinx.
Sentence: María was born in Ecuador, so she is Latina.
Hispanic: Spanish-speaking.
Sentence: José was born in Brazil, so he is NOT Hispanic, since his country’s official language is Portugese, but he IS considered Latino.
Mexican: from the Central American country named Mexico, NOT a language. NOTICE! not all Latinos in the US are from Mexico
Sentence: Enrique was born in Mexico, so he is Mexican. Enrique speaks Spanish, since “Mexican” is not a language.
Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx: a person of Mexican descent (usually born in the US)
Sentence: Anna’s parents were born in Mexico, so she identifies as Chicana. Her friend Miguel’s parents are from Colombia, so he identifies as Latino.
Spanish: a language spoken by many countries all over the world/ originating from the country Spain. NOTICE! not the only language spoken in Spain or South/Central America.
Sentence: Juan was born in Madrid, so he is Spanish. He only speaks Spanish, but has friends who speak other languages.
Quechua, Catalan, Nahuatl, Gallego, Euskera: other languages spoken in countries where Spanish is the ‘official’ language. Many Hispanics are bilingual and Spanish may not be their native language.
Sentence: Alba was born in a region of Spain called Catalonia. Even though she is Spanish, she speaks Catalan with her family and friends.
Sentence #2: Sofia was born in Mexico and does not speak “Mexican,” but her family does speak Nahuatl, a native language originating in Mexico.
That is all.
