I highly warn against seeing this movie if you’ve had severe depression. I had a panic attack after seeing it, couldn’t get the disturbing images out of my mind I was antsy and pacing literally all night and filled with dread over the feeling I needed to do bad things. If you have self harmed or had thoughts of ending your own life think twice about seeing this film. I am also not a horror movie person nor will I ever be but it seriously felt like a bomb dropped on me last night.

Gender and pleasure

So much of the Euro-American understanding of being trans (or anything other than 100% constantly identified with your assigned gender) focuses on discomfort. 

Some people take this idea to an extreme and claim you can’t be trans unless you hate your body and want every surgery available to you. As many other writers have said before, that’s not true. It’s perfectly possible to be trans with only mild dysphoria or none at all. It’s perfectly possible to be trans and have a mental map of your body that looks just like the one you already have. 

But I’d like to push even harder against the idea that trans=discomfort. I’d like to offer this: sometimes the exploration of one’s gender can be motivated by pleasure rather than discomfort. 

Let me give an example. Let’s say there’s a person named Cal. Most people think of Cal as a boy, and Cal’s all right with that. So far as Cal’s concerned, a boy isn’t a bad thing to be. But sometimes, Cal likes to imagine being a girl and being treated as a girl. Those fantasies are always accompanied by feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, anticipation, and warmth. Eventually, having had these thoughts for years, Cal asks people to use ‘she’ pronouns in private and to refer to her as a girl. Cal does this for another year before claiming the label “trans”. 

Some people would say a person like Cal can’t be trans because there’s no dysphoria, self-hatred, distress, or even discomfort. There’s just a pleasure-based preference. But why is distress necessary? Why are trans people supposed to be defined solely by our pain and self-hatred?

It’s my opinion that defining trans people solely by discomfort is an aspect of transphobia. The idea behind trans=discomfort is that being anything other than 100% cis is so awful that no one would do it unless the alternative were unlivable. Think about that: defining trans people solely by their experiences of discomfort means believing that being trans is so awful that only misery could drive us to it. And to me, that sounds like the thinking of someone who really hates trans people.

So I’ll come out and say it: sometimes transition or self-exploration of gender is not just about lessening discomfort, but is about improving and deepening the pleasure we take in our lives.

i REALLY want to appreciate this but u dont EVER see white actors taking a stand—-and i mean REALLY taking a stand—-to overturn the institutionalized racism behind casting practices in hollywood.

like…ellen made a similar statement when she hosted. EVERY SINGLE AWARDS SHOW we see white actors/comedians get on stage and point out how fucking racist hollywood is but because it’s in this “comedic” setting exactly how SERIOUS r we supposed to take it?

ESPECIALLY when OUTSIDE of that setting they be steady on their “exodus movie”—-taking roles that SHOULD go to actors of color without so much as a backwards glance to their often more deserving but less racially privileged colleagues.

yeah we kno hollywood is racist but we’re not gonna REALLY talk about it. we’re not gonna question how viola davis waited two decades for an opportunity that a white actor can get within five years or less. we’re not gonna question why lupita nyong’o’s oscar win hasn’t given her anything CLOSE to the career trajectory of jennifer lawrence. we’re not gonna question why white directors can be hailed as “groundbreaking” without ever casting a single actor of color in a lead role their ENTIRE careers. 

that’s PATHETIC.

when actors of color get sat down and asked about the state of racism in hollywood they put their JOBS on the line. and the ppl who COULD speak in solidarity like hollywood would EVER stop casting white men sit in complete silence—-lest it’s to chuckle at “jokes” about this issue during awards shows while comfortably knowing that whether they work hard or not they’ll always have a platform to stand on.

i dunno…i just feel we need to stop giving white ppl applause for doing the bare fucking minimum.

i have never watched UKS, but i honestly couldn’t just scroll past this.

apparently “dong nguyen” is supposed to be a vietnamese man who is kimmy’s love interest - but he’s portrayed by korean actor ki hong lee. why is this problematic?

when we talk about representation in the media, it is commonly known that asians are one of the most underrepresented groups in entertainment, and when they are represented, they are usually of EAST ASIAN (japanese, chinese, korean) descent. when most people hear “asian” they are most likely imagining individuals from east asia.

southeast asians are virtually absent in media representation: filipinx, khmer, thai, laotian, among many others often do not get to see themselves portrayed in the media, and for the show to have cast ki hong lee to play a vietnamese man is extremely racist, because asians are not fucking interchangeable! how hard would it have been to cast a vietnamese person in the role?

moreover, the show is attempting to make a terrible joke here - “kim mi” does not mean penis in vietnamese, it is literally just a gibberish phrase. it’s obvious that they were just trying to make fun of the fact that the man’s name “dong” in english is a euphemism for penis and making up “vietnamese” words to sort of mitigate the racist joke because hahahaha kim mi is penis too!

i find this to be extremely insensitive, because many poc have the experience of getting their birth names (which usually mean something beautiful in their native languages and chosen with care by their parents) butchered and ridiculed by english speakers.

i have a vietnamese name that i still HATE being called by because it brings back awful memories of kids teasing me because my birth name was usually read as cock or fungus by english speakers. im sure that many others share this harrowing experience of hating their own fucking identity because of english speaking assholes as well, and for me it led to an outright rejection of my vietnamese identity that took me a long time to regain and reaccept, and even now it is still something that i’m grappling with.

India is remaking Game of Thrones!!!

When you play Rani Mahal, you win or you die. I think. Actually, all I really know is that “Rani Mahal“ is the title of an upcoming Indian TV drama — which is reportedly "inspired by” George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones.

Before you freak out, you should know the show is actually set on Earth, in India, in 1857. However, there will be characters based on Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister, so while there may or may not be dragons, there will probably be plenty of drama. One thing the show almost certainly won’t have is the giant budget HBO gives it, even though Rani Mahal is being produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Sakshi Thanvar has been cast as the Daenerys character, while Anita Hassanandani will play Cersei, and Parth Samthaan will presumably know nothing as Jon Snow. Works for me.
