Valaryian/Targaryen courtship culture mimics dragon mating behaviors. A suitor will adorn himself with the colors of his intended and if he is not confronted or rebuked, he will continue onto the second step, hoard showing.

Everyone is confused why Aerion Brightflame decided suddenly to wear elm green rather than his usual firey oranges and reds.
