Everybody teasing them for doing anything together
Hey anon! This is very short (since I've been terribly busy at the moment) but I hope you enjoy it either way.
“Gina, can we talk about you and my cousin for a second,” Ashlyn teased, standing up and crossing the living room towards her friend. She lowered herself onto the free space beside her on the couch, pulling the phone from her hand.
“What about us?” She replied, reaching in an attempt to snatch it back, but failing miserably.
Kourtney leaned over from Gina’s other side, pausing the TV show she had playing.
“Y’all have been spending serious time together. Us girls have barely seen you since you guys kissed that night in the Slices parking lot!”
Gina held her hands up defensively. “That’s not true at all- we’re hanging out right now, aren’t we.”
“You’ve been texting him all day. And you’re barely paying attention to the Kardashians!” Kourtney exclaimed with a sassy flick of the wrist in the direction of the screen.
Ashlyn grabbed Gina’s hand gently, encouraging her to meet her eyes.
“Look, we don’t want to make you feel bad. We both know how exciting a new relationship can be! Both of us just want some Gina-love too, ok?”
Gina sighed, pressing her hands to her face momentarily before turning to look from one girl to the other.
“I’m so sorry, you guys. Sisters should come before misters- always.”
Ashlyn pulled her in for a hug, and Kourtney leaned in too. They came together, cheeks pressed together, and arms tightly wrapped around Gina’s waist.
“I promise, you guys will have my full attention for the rest of the afternoon. We can even lock my phone in a drawer!” She declared, “and I’ll do whatever it takes to make it up to you.”
Kourtney let out a squeal.
“Ah, this is going to be the best!”
“Agreed,” Ashlyn chimed in, “I’ll grab us those facemasks and we’ll have a proper girl’s night.”
Ok, I speak as someone who’s shipped Portwell since the end of season one: I don’t think they’re all that good together right now!
Allow me to explain myself:
It’s clear from all of their scenes together that EJ is emotionally unavailable. He’s always rushing around, doing many things at once and often, neglecting Gina. Now, this isn’t to say that he’s a bad person or even a bad boyfriend. He’s a teenage boy who’s having an ordinary reaction to being in way over his head, often at the expense of his girlfriend and new relationship.
Now, what’s the go with Gina? Her main issue is with communication. She’s feeling many things regarding EJ and his unexpected absence, which as we can see from some of the scenes we’ve gotten over the past few episodes, she doesn’t really understand how to express. Again, that isn’t an insult against her- actually, she’s behaving exactly in the way you would expect from an excited, teenage girl in her first relationship, who is confused as to the fact that it isn’t playing out in the way she had in mind.
I don’t think I even need to say that this just isn’t a healthy dynamic.
So, what I think is likely to happen is that they will have a healthy break up within the next few episodes, leaving EJ to focus on his directorial duties and Gina on her role. I also think it is a possibility that EJ will go to his dad’s program at the end of the season (keep in mind that he has graduated already so any potential relationship with someone from high school would be a little harder anyway).
And in terms of ships, let me just state that I have no idea how this will play out in the show- it could be that Ricky and Gina end up together, as they seem to be setting up at the moment, or that EJ and Gina rediscover each other! Remember, there’s at least another full season of this show left to air after this one so there’s no guarantee of anything.
Hey anon! Thanks for the request, and sorry it's short.
..
“And he ran across the carpark to meet me, before, y’know.” Gina whispered, pausing the story with a grin on her face.
Ashlyn gasped, “Oh my god, Gina! Your first kiss? This is huge!”
Everybody in the little huddle leaned in closer.
“It was really good, you guys,” she said, “He held my face perfectly and it wasn’t too sloppy, just… nice.”
A chorus of ‘awww’ and ‘cute’ rippled around the room. Nini grabbed Gina’s arm, leaning into her side with a smile on her face.
“You guys are such a good match. See, I told you it would work out.”
She giggled, retuning the hug. It almost seemed too good to be true; going into Junior year with an amazing boyfriend, a supportive group of friends and a guaranteed spot at a school she loved.
“Yeah-“ Gina began, before being interrupted by loud talking from outside.
Suddenly, the door flew open and Ricky and EJ jogged in.
“Hey guys, what’d we miss,” EJ called breathlessly, taking a seat on the floor beside Gina, playfully elbowing his cousin out of the way.
Ashlyn shook her head.
“I don’t know what you see in him,” she whisper yelled in their direction.
But Gina did. As he pressed a gentle kiss to her lips, one finger under her chin and the other hand intertwined with hers, she couldn’t help but think, damn. How did I get so lucky?
I'm actually loving what the show is doing with Kourtney's storyline at the moment!!
Getting to see myself represented (a loud, outwardly confident kid who seems to have everything together, but actually struggles a lot with anxiety) is amazing- I've never seen a show do a mental health plotline like this.
The bits that especially stuck out to me were a) how Gina noticed something was up, but Kourtney quickly brushed it off, in the way that many people who are struggling tend to do, and b) the way she relies on her phone as a means of contacting somebody who can ground her during a panic attack,.
In future episodes I'd love to see some scenes of her reaching out to her friends, particularly Gina and Ashlyn, in order to figure out how to enjoy her camp experience. I definitely have faith that the show could do something lovely with this!
Overall, I'm happy to see this representation and I really hope HSMTMTS does us anxious gals justice!
