Kyung-won almost drops the pizza cutter in surprise, looking down at the animal claws its way up their trousers. “Jiji,” they grin, prying the cat from their leg and cuddling him close to their chest. “I missed you, too, cheeky. You know you’re not supposed to have food from the counter.” Still, they held the squirming kitten in one arm and scooped two slices into a plate.

“Here,” they held it out, smiling but looking very sheepish as they made only intermittent eye contact with River.

River smiles at the sight of their friend with their shared-custody kitten, a genuine smile, finally. Hopefully this would only continue. They take the plate with the pizza on it, nodding thanks.

“Thanks, god, this smells god. I missed coming home and smelling food, you have no idea,” River laughs a little bit, taking a bite and savoring it before heading for the fridge.

“You wanna drink? What’s goin’ on? The library okay? Viktoriya give you the job at her bar yet? How’s um, everyone?”

“Well I am. I’m the prowl, constantly.” River sits up, running a hand over Leon’s shoulder and arm, “Always looking for my next victim.”

They lean in playfully, baring their teeth like a vampire and going for Leon’s neck to bite at it playfully.

“I can see that.” Hayden shrugged, glancing over at River once more. “No I’m not hung up over him. It’s not like that. He’s definitely not boring but maybe yours are.” 

“Mm. So you’re still friends? That’s nice. Also I don’t have any exes. Not my style. In the wise words of Kanye West: Love is cursed by monogamy.”

“I just like fooling around with people.”

River’s brows raise. “Shit. That’s raw. Damn. So were you like, all gory and shit? Gnarly. I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”

Despite the texts, Kyung-won wondered if they’d done the wrong thing. Maybe River needed more time than they let on. They turned around and went about cutting the pizza, putting large slices on a plate for River knowing full well they must’ve been on a liquid diet for the most part.

“I’m alright, thanks,” they nod, keeping their voice light. “Got homesick.”

River has to smile a little bit as Kyung-won mentions getting homesick, though they’re still saddened because of how closed off they’re being. But it’s understandable--River just broke their heart, after all, and it sucks and they wish they hadn’t. Slowly they approach as Kyung-won cuts the pizza, the silence between them deafening, only broken when Jiji hops on Kyung-won’s pant leg and clings there, making River laugh a little.

“Someone else missed you, too.”

➳ Tᴀsᴋ ᴏᴏ2: Bucket List

Follow an artist or band they love on tour all over the globe, someone they know puts on a great show. Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Kanye West--someone similar.

Visit Paris, check out the art museums there--a childish, wistful want, but one that’s important to them.

Get their high school diploma/GED, but that’s a secret.

Learn another language--something cool, preferably. They feel a little stunted, especially because in Europe almost everybody knows two or more languages.

Be able to live well off selling their art--not just getting a couple hundred bucks every now and again for selling a painting, or trading a painting for some weed. But actually being able to live and sustain themselves off commission work, with maybe some extra to spare.

Find new people to call “family.”

Go shopping at Harrod’s, and actually be able to buy something on their designer floor.

Get commissioned to do an album cover for a band they love.

Go to every major music festival, but mostly, Glastonbury.

Get some closure in regards to their parents--find out more about their mother, or find out who their father is. They’re more invested in their mother and generally don’t care about their father or what he’s doing, but it would also be nice to know who he was.

The crisp snap of her heels echoed throughout the otherwise silent park as she tumbled down face first, with only her hands to break her fall. “Oh fu––” The sentence never even got the chance to see the end of the day as she fell from grace, her hair splayed around her in an anything by elegant manner. “That hurts.”

River didn’t want to laugh as they watched the girl eat it on the sidewalk, so instead they just covered their mouth, giggling, as they went over to her.

“Oh my god, are you--” they snorted, “Are you okay?”

“That fucking turn out. I mean, alright I knew we were good but – not that good. But yeah so I mean my dreams of becoming a rock icon are coming true, but how was your night mate?”

“I honestly didn’t expect to see any good local stuff up here, but you’ve pleasantly surprised me,” River said with a smile, “Really good stuff. And like, I know local live shows like nobody business. I lived in New York, Chicago, Nashville, but you guys put some of the acts I’ve seen to shame.”

“I can see that. I imagine the midwest is pretty boring.” Hayden shakes his head, lifting his hand to rub his face. “My ex has all of those things but at least you’re close.” 

“Boring, and a lot of other things,” River huffed, almost grumpily. They weren’t there anymore though, so they didn’t have much to complain about. They roll their eyes at the mention of an ex.

“Are you hung up on them? That’s a drag. Exes are boring.”

“Well, we all have our own opinions now don’t we? What kind of music do you like?”

“That we do,” River said, “I usually like it, but man if I don’t get a hundred requests to play Shake It Off a day...”

River grins a little. “That’s a tough question. I like everything. As long as it’s good and progressive and interesting,” they said, in their snobbish fashion, “If it has a seven or above on Pitchfork.”

They chewed their lip and looked down at the pizza, glancing up at River, too much like an apologetic dog. “I… I made pizza… I thought, maybe, you, um… Hadn’t eaten in a while? Or not. I dunno.”

River smiles, but it’s weak. They really just want to run over and hug Kyung-won, but they can’t now and it sucks.

“I love pizza,” River says, “And... I mean, I’ve been eating. um. Lot of cold cuts, but, y’know...” They’d been drinking more than they’d been eating, but Kyung-won didn’t need to know that. Though who was River fooling, KW knew them so well that they probably did know.

“Um, how are you? How are things...?”

But you gotta admit, she has a few good, catchy songs. I don’t love her, but I like a few of her songs! You just gotta listen and enjoy.

“Can’t do it. Once you hear the few catchy songs over and over unwillingly, it becomes torture. I’d rather listen to like, harsh noise for an hour.”

River realizes they’re coming on a little strong and shakes their head. “But I’m glad that you enjoy her, I guess.”

“There’s no place like home, as they say.” Hayden shrugged, glancing over at River again. “Is it? It seems pretty normal to me. My type is dark hair, light eyes, a little bit of mystery and angst in their lives.”

“Well, like I said. Small town England. Again, I’m from the Midwest, so I expect the worst out of everybody,” River says, almost sheepishly. They hum wistfully at Hayden’s reply, batting their eyelashes. “I certainly have the last three things down.”

[Feeling somewhat strange to be back home after it all, Kyung-won busied themselves with this pizza in their kitchen. To their dismay, they found that River hadn’t touched much of the groceries they’d left for them. Jiji rubbed up against their ankles and they smiled. Hearing the door knob click with a key, they turned, heart racing. Swallowing, picked up the pan and held it, fear and nervousness coursing through their veins. [They smile] H-hey, River.

After another evening at the station, River debates whether or not to go home or to head to the bar first. After a bit of debate they figure home was the best option--every time they went to the bar it felt like they wound up in a stranger’s bed, and they were getting tired of it. Plus, what would Kyung-won think of them if they found out? Nothing good, that’s for damn sure.

They make the slow trek home, ready to come home to an empty flat, but when they open the door and the lights are on and the smell of food permeates their nose, they freeze for a moment, turning towards the kitchen to see their friend. They want to smile and hug them, and they almost move to do so--before remembering what had happened and reeling back in.

“K-dub... hi... are you...” River scratched the back of their neck anxiously. “Hi.”

Leon wrinkles his nose, sighing softly. “So now I not only feel old but I feel like a predator. Thanks for that,” he huffs, nudging River with his elbow.

“Sharapova, the blonde lady, right? Nah, fuck her. My girl Serena all up in this bitch,” River nods, laughing a bit, “But yeah. Mmhm. Rafa. Maybe I just have a thing for spanish guys.”
