Sébastien lets out a shaky breath. “You’re saying that what I’m feeling is just one of your spells?”

Nile ignores the tears stinging at her eyes. “Yeah, it’s not real… and if you stay, I wouldn’t know if it was because of the spell and you wouldn’t know if it was because I didn’t want to go to prison.” 

He turns away from her for a moment before saying, “Yeah well, you know, all relationships have problems.” 

Nile lets out a huff of laughter that dies quickly as her gaze stays locked with his. “I’m right, aren’t I?” A beat of silence. “You don’t know, do you?”

His gaze drops away from her for a moment. “Well, why don’t you do what you do, and I do what I do, and we’ll see where we end up.” The corner of his lips quirk up into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “‘Kay?”

“‘Kay,” Nile says with a nod, unable to look at him as he walks away.

Her eyes stay glued to the ground as she hears him say, “Curses only have power when you believe in them. And I don’t.” 

The silence is unbearable against the emotions she’s got raging inside. His voice is so quiet that she almost misses his final words to her. Words that make her heart break even more. 

“You know what? I wished for you, too.”

there’s a big difference between “i’m sad because a character i was emotionally invested in was killed off” and “this character’s death served no purpose, was used for shock value, and is the product of bad writing and i’m upset about that”

for me i strongly lean toward booker as werewolf because of the whole 'can you love me and my darker side' of it all. of course nile should be loved including her darker side too but it's less of a central theme to her character. for her it's more like. can you be there for me and have my back no matter what. which is similar but not exactly the same as the first variety. and is another reason she and booker are a good match :B

i'm not sure what mythical creature correlates to her romantic theme though.

(i'm not against nile as a werewolf. preference but not a dealbreaker and all that)

Based off a one off line in my Bon Roulette fic: Nile as a fallen angel. Or maybe a pegasus Shifter. She should have wings is what I seem to mean. This is coming to me just off the dome as I write

Nile with wings!! she's so smart and confident and self-reliant, she's a born leader, she can hold the team brain cell if she needs to, but all of that can get so lonely. she needs a partner who can keep up with her, who wants to keep that thrilling breakneck pace with her, but who isn't threatened by her star power. someone who can't fly and isn't jealous about it, who's happy to support her from the ground.

this also has me thinking about how Nile has a dark side that she hasn't owned up to yet. becoming a werewolf and realizing that people are justifiably scared of her bc of how easily she could hurt them, remembering back to handing out candy to kids terrified of her m16, or a fallen angel story where she thinks at first that the fall was just happenstance and not because of anything she'd done...

I wasn't really thinking about it on a thematic level at the time, that my nontraditional werewolf fic replaced the usual "can you love me and my dark side" with Nile reciprocating what Booker did for her when she first became immortal. "something bizarre and terrifying has happened to my body" and someone's there with you as you face it, not judging you, not playing Pollyanna or catastrophizing, acknowledging the shitty parts and also helping you to smile again.

not doomed by the narrative but saved by the narrative. yeah i know you'd rather die than keep suffering but the story doesn't actually care what you want. you have to keep going, even when it hurts. even being erased from existence won't stop you from being salvaged from the wreckage of un-being. get up. keep pushing. keep bleeding. keep living.

a gentle reminder that based on what copley says to merrick in the car, getting the team captured wasn't the plan copley or booker consciously had in mind in south sudan. The plan was for them to get enough samples from the killfloor scene initially, and when that doesn't work copley thinks the video is gonna be enough. it wasn't even the next plan, as copley suggests he can get ONE of the immortals (implying booker) but not all of them. When booker signed up for this, what HE thought was gonna happen is that they all get shot to shit once and then later someone contacts him a way he can end his own life. That was the original plan.

This is not to say he isn't responsible for getting them captured and tortured, he definitely is, just that he didn't set out to do that initially. and if we listen to copley in the lab he is horrified and confused and surprised at the way merrick is treating them. that is naive yes, (like almost ridiculously so) but clearly that was not the plan, and at that point booker didn't know that was happening either. Again, he is totally responsible for the consequences for his actions and letting it go that far, but pretending like he signed a paper saying "consent and agree to let my family be captured and tortured forever" is incorrect. when he realises how bad things are he begs to be left in the lab. he didn't want this for his family, he was too depressed and selfish to not see that it wouldn't but it still matters if we are gonna talk about his motivations.

Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.
