At Hyper Island you really feel part of an amazingly supportive community. This is some of the best advice given to me last week by ex-Hyper Island students. It was a great week of inspiring talks and workshops, making me excited to figure out my research project @hyperislanduk #crewuk17 #hyperforlife #goodvibes #dxd (at Hyper Island in the UK)
I Kanban make pizza! One of the most fun workshops at #hyperislanduk #agile #kanban #ux #crewuk17 (at Hyper Island)

I had the privilege of listening to Jonathan Ball talk about the development of design thinking. If you haven't come across him already, he's a big practitioner of design thinking and has consulted for the at the British Design Council for a long time. A key point he raised was having methodology in the design process, which led to the development of the double diamond.
My biggest learning so far from Hyper Island UK is adopting the 'yes, and...' mentality. It's so easy to say 'no, but...' when people share their ideas, ask you for input or even simply want to hang out. We've all felt rejection and know how that can affect our confidence, both creatively and personally. Building on other people's ideas has been amazing. I've been trying hard to stick to it this week and it was difficult to refrain from 'no, but...' at times but practice makes perfect. Thanks @hyperislanduk #crewuk17 #gettingschooled #yesand #designthinking
This week at Hyper Island we were given our first live brief: the tough challenge of making Manchester more accessible for neurodiverse people. This was our first opportunity to use some of the principles we’ve learnt about design thinking and put them and ourselves to the test. I knew very little about neurodiversity and broad spectrum of people it affects. It was a great education to research a topic which I knew very little about.
As a team, we’ve been working through the double diamond approach to problem solving. We’ve been using an adaptation of it by Dan Nessler shared by Hyper Island, but the original was created by the British Design Council.
I’ve found doing field research the most invaluable experience yet so far. Coming from a graphic design background I rarely had the opportunity to chat to the end user/person who I was designing for and this first hand experience has given me invaluable insights. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is. At the end of week one of our project, we’ve reached the ideation phase. I’ve never been through prototyping or iteration before so this is something which will be really great to learn next week.
Thinking like a designer
"Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” Tim Brown, president and CEO, IDEO I’ve recently started studying Digital Experience Design at Hyper Island UK. I’m 3 weeks into the course and have learnt so much in a short space of time. I wanted to keep track and share some of my learnings and discoveries along the way. We recently began approaching the subject of design thinking. Today’s businesses and organisations face so many unique challenges that need multidimensional solutions for products and services, which go beyond basic applications. This is where design thinking comes in. So exactly do we mean by this? To strip it down it’s thinking like a designer. I’ll spend the next few weeks researching and learning about design thinking methodologies and share my learnings along the way.
