GENTLE PSA; the best way to interact with me is through memes. you could send that thing @ me even though i’ve posted it five months ago and i’d still answer and appreciate it. it’s hard to think up starters out of the blue unless they’re plotted, but memes are just good and gives you a general idea of what’s happening. so please, if you see a meme on my blog, SEND THE MEME.
One would thinkan advanced model such as Connor would learn from his mistakes, yet again hefound himself owing Bella an answer, this time about a topic much morepersonal.
“I don’t know howto properly answer that,” he began.
Of course, hehas thought about it ever since they talked about love, but instead ofdiscovering the ultimate truth about love, he realized that it was even morecomplicated than he initially assumed.
This was whenhe learned that there were worlds separating being in love and lovingsomeone.
“I might havesome romantic feelings for someone,” he admitted evasively, “Though I can’treally tell if it is only a crush or if I truly love that person.”
He looked downat his hands, “Only time will tell, I guess.”
RK800 follows Connor through the maze of burnt-out cars, bullet-riddled crates and piled sand bags. Is the other android armed? Are there still others hiding around what had quickly turned from a battleground to a graveyard?
At least it seems that the leader of the deviants, RK200 – Markus – has left the scene with his cronies. Cowardly; nothing else could be expected of an android who let himself be glorified as the savior of a whole people. What a sad, misguided fool.
Behind an overturned minivan, RK800 discovers a small puddle of thirium. It seems Connor has rested here for an instant, momentarily releasing pressure from the damaged part of his body. Judging from the amount of blue liquid, it seems to be more than just a small scratch. Would make the injury the other android more aggressive? Or is this a concept that only applies to living creatures?
RK800 scans the surrounding ground and quickly identifies a set of fresh foot prints overlaying the web of prints from the earlier struggles. Connor’s foot prints lead to building and disappear around a corner. Carefully, RK800 approaches, ready to subdue Connor, should he try to jump him.
As he swiftly rounds the corner, he finds the alley in front of him empty. For a moment, RK800 just stands there, baffled, but then he notices a narrow back door just a few steps ahead. If he was injured and on the run, he would try to get his adversary to come to him, choice of the battlefield would make a victory more likely. Therefore, Connor will probably hide somewhere in this building, hoping for him to pass him by or, much more likely, waiting for him to get near enough to be dispatched. In this case it would be smart for Connor to have the entry door in view. Going in stealth is therefore out of the question.
RK800 opens the door slowly, while being on high alert for any sounds or movements that would indicate an imminent attack.
“Connor, it doesn’t have to be like this,” he speaks into the semi-darkness of the seemingly empty house, “Just look where your allegiance to the deviants has put you…”
He slowly crosses the dusty ground floor, scanning for the tell-tale thirium traces, “You think you’re doing the right thing, you believe in justice – we both do,” he continues, “I can offer you a way out.”
Okay, for today’s edutainment, I present to you a side-by-side of a post I wrote for @pl-600-s using Microsoft Word’s dictate function.
First is the clean version, mostly with editing for the wtfs and some actual content.
Second is the voice-to-text dictation to Word, all done in one go without editing. As you can see, Word does not understand all commands it’s supposed to, it makes up words it doesn’t know itself (wtf?), capitalization and punctuation is a bit off, and it has issues understanding a non-native accent when spoken rapidly. Nevertheless, it’s extremely useful for writing a quick and rough draft, which really helps me getting shit done I would normally spend hours on, mostly looking at a blank page.
Of note, Word actually censors profanity, which I found out earlier by getting frustrated and swearing about the program while still dictating. Haven’t figured out a workaround yet, other than not swearing, which is honestly b******* and f****** impossible.
Lieutenant Anderson had tried his best to convince the heiress not to join actively in their investigation. On the one hand, everything's that she might discover could turn out to be inadmissible in an actual court case – should it ever come to that – and on the other hand, plainly, he was concerned about her safety, has to him, she was still nothing but a high society lady trying to experience some adventure.
However, as he received a call from Captain Fowler ordering him to return to the police station right away, he did not have to time to persuade the head strong woman.
So once Bella and Connor arrived in Detroit city, it was up to them to follow up with the lead Connor had uncovered. They had the taxi bring them into an area that was infamous for its abandoned factory complexes, self-storage units, and one of the city’s largest junk yards.
“Hereabouts should be the area where the coordinates meet,” said Connor looking around. He gave it some thought and then admitted, “This is more ground to cover than I expected...”
He intensely wished he still had his full scanning abilities. The scanning interface kept bringing up less than helpful information on his surroundings, such as identifying a corner building to be storage facility previously run by City Store-IT, before they went bankrupt in 2033. However, he would have been more interested in learning about the building’s structural features, possibly with a blueprint overlay or a real-time identification of fresh foot prints in the vicinity.
Questioningly he looked at Bella. The proper approach to investigating such a large area would have been to call in reinforcements. Unfortunately, this was out of the question, so the only option left was to prioritize the locations depending on the likelihood they could serve as a hideout for a militant and violent deviant group.
“I suggest we start with the factory building to our right,” Connor proposed, but following Bella’s skeptical expression, he felt the need to clarify his reasoning, “The junkyard would likely be a place for them to scavenge, but it does not offer the protection of a proper hideout infrastructure. The storage units could offer this, but I suspect it might be difficult to operate from a 10 by 10 container.”
As they started in the direction of the first factory building, which was surrounded by a rusty but surprisingly intact fence, he reached for her arm and instructed her with a firm voice, “Stay close to me and do as I say at all times.”
Connor nodded slowly, “Then trust him for what he sees in me.”
For a moment, he seemed to be lost in thought. Brows furrowed, he turned and again looked at Simon. For an instant, it looked like he was about to say something, but his lips closed again has his expression darkened.
Indeed, conflicted seemed to be the best description of his current state of mind. After another moment of silence, he finally said in a measured voice, “I don't exactly know what you saw earlier, but please believe me when I tell you that I've got everything under control and there is nothing to worry about.”
Connor was not yet adept enough in the more natural, human, way of conversing with others, so it completely escaped him that telling someone not to worry tended to have the opposite effect.
In fact, he himself was wary about it. The incidence with Amanda taking control over his body had shaken him deeply and there was no guarantee that it would not happen again.
He shuddered as if a chill had come over him, whether it was related to the freezing air whipping across the Android stronghold or the realization that he was not in the clear yet, that he may not be master of his own fate, his own self.
//For the next 2 weeks (starting Sunday), my activity will be low. I'll be on vacation and attending a workshop, and most nights are already filled with stuff.
I can’t predict how terrible it will be exactly, but please prepare to be patient!
DO NOT worry, I’m not dropping anything, I love our threads!
DO send random asks. They can be easier to answer offline (I still keep a note book. I’m old school)
Also, I owe everyone, I’m aware D: I will get to it tomorrow, hopefully.
Connor hadspent almost two hours in a state not unlike sleep, with system maintenancetasks instead of conscious thought pulling from his resources. However, like ithappened more and more frequently in the recent weeks, intrusive thoughtsdemanded his attention, sending images and sudden emotional impulses throughhis hazy mind.
He would seeKamski’s android assistant in front of him, getting to its knees under the deceptivelygentle guidance of its master’s hand. A flawless, gold-framed face turning upto him as he pointed the gun at it, Kamski’s hand closing over his own. Twopuppets placed on a stage to enact the cruel fantasy of an indifferent mind. Everytime, he would pull the trigger and watch a flicker of disappointment cross theman’s face. Every time the scene played out in his memory, the revulsion in himwould grow, just a bit, but enough to leave Connor with a faint aftertaste of regretonce he resumed full control of this processes.
Did he killChloe? Was there anything to kill in an android? No, it had been deactivated, although violently, just like many before her and many to come.
Androids werehumankind’s most sophisticated machines, built in their image but lacking the truespark of life. There had been no soul behind the girl’s pale blue eyes. Yetwhen the bullet struck the android’s beautifully sculpted skull, it had stillseemed like something had left its… her body. The essence of her was what disappearedthat very moment.
While he hadnot killed an organic being, there, in front of the windows looking out onto a snow-covered,silent world, he had destroyed what inhabited that synthetic body. All the what ifs, the shyly blossoming thoughts insidethe meticulously engineered head…
With the pull ofthe trigger he had taken away her chance to become someone.
//Okay, I haveto admit, I haven’t thought about that particular topic, so thanks a lot forthe ask. Actually, in a way, it really defines the different incarnations ofConnor for me as it will inevitably lead into the question what life means to himand where he draws the line between alive and merely ‘functioning’.
Let’s see.
Deviant Connor has adapteda form of ‘cogito, ergo sum’ (I think, therefore I am) and he would argue thatthe process by which independent thought came to be is really of minorimportance compared to the significance of a distinct personality forming in abody, no matter if organic or not. For deviant Connor, the value of life anddeath is intimately linked to a person, no matter if human or android. A goodperson, or a person he is fond of, will be more valuable than a bad person, andhe would possibly kill to save such a person’s life. He is capable ofemotionally understanding life, death, and loss and it influences the decisionshe makes greatly.
Machine Connor has a veryhierarchical understanding of life, but it is not inherently rooted in actual moralsbut in functionality. Any human life will always be more valuable than an androidlife, or many android lives, for that matter. He would destroy any android, himself included, to save a human life. This program could only be overriddenby a specific mission objective that would call for an “at all cost” solution. Inthis case, he may harm humans who stand between him and the completion of his task, and he will not have any qualms about cutting them down. Of note may be thatfor machine Connor, only the life of humans has this special standing. Any otherliving creature is about at an equal level to an object. If given no contextbut only the choice between killing a turtle and an android, he would kill theturtle, because it’s cheaper. He does not have the capacity to truly assignemotional value to life, whether animal or human, unless he is told about it, although he may seem to actemotionally conscious. As for personal death, he lacks the awareness offinality as his latest backup will just be downloaded into a new body andnothing would be lost. In this respect, he does not feel self-worth to anydegree.
Now to my questioning Connor. What I wrote abovecould be put in that verse. He will start off with the characteristics of amachine and commit some actions that will come back to haunt him as heprogresses further into deviancy. As he discovers that organic and syntheticlives may see eye to eye, his willingness to end a life sharply decreases becausehe realizes that he should not be in the position to make the call to erasesomeone. If put in such a situation, he may hesitate as he evaluates it, andmay end up acting impulsively or not at all. In essence, he is questioning hispast and present actions and takes the first steps towards understanding hisown developing moral compass. It makes him somewhat unreliable as he initiallywould try to force himself to follow his mission objectives while also makingan effort to be morally in the clear. Of the three general incarnations, he isthe least likely to actually kill someone, mostly because he has not yetdeveloped a sense of discriminating between a justifiable death or kill and awholly preventable one.
So, of course nothing is set in stone and he may develop in one or the other direction, but this is what I currently base my writing on.
