Top 10 TV Robots - Part 2
It's time for the conclusion of our list of top 10 robots in TV shows, which began with part 1 featuring the 10-6 spots. And here they are folks, our top 5 countdown (plus a few honorable mentions):
5) Robot B-9 - One of the most recognizable live action TV robots in history is this one from the classic TV show, "Lost in Space". It's almost impossible to look at a photo of this robot and not hear its catchphrase "danger Will Robinson, danger". Known simply as Robot on the show, the formal technical name for its design is B-9, Class M-3 General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot. The robot was actually a suit worn by Bob May who also voice acted the role.
4) Daleks - Other than the phone booth and maybe the screwdriver, one of the most recognizable things in the "Doctor Who" universe is the Dalek. We had a bit of a debate with our Whovians in the office over this one as these may or may not technically be considered a robot. They are robot-like shells that contain a mutant alien inside called a Kaled. Given their popularity and significant impact to science fiction television, we decided to include them in the list - not to mention the Oxford Dictionary defines them as robots. So there's that. And that's good enough for us.
3) Data - Along with Captain Picard, Data is one of the most popular characters on "Star Trek the Next Generation". Technically, Data would be classified as an Android, which for loose purposes here is still a robot. He also owns a cat which is all part of his continuing quest to try and be more human. Data is by far the most recognizable role for actor Brent Spiner who can also be seen in "Independence Day" and "Warehouse 13".
2) Cylons - These robots have undergone a variety of styles throughout the different "Battlestar Galactica" series in the late 1970s and more modern and popular 2000s version (along with the prequel "Caprica"). The original robots were much more rigid in their design, with the modern show giving them a more menacing makeover. They also took on a variety of humanoid forms known simply by their number: 'Six' being the most recognizable in the series. The modern version of BSG is one of the best action sci-fi shows of all time. Be careful if you start watching it as this sketch from "Portlandia" is pretty accurate to what your life will become.
1) Bender - He's rude. He's crude. He's all attitude. But you can't help loving this robot from "Futurama". His full name is Bender Bending Rodriguez and is a Bending Unit 22 model robot on a retro-futuristic 31st century Earth. The show was created by Matt Groening who years earlier created arguably the most popular animated series of all time, "The Simpsons". According to Groening, the name Bender is a nod to John Bender from the 1980s Hughes classic, "The Breakfast Club". The character is voiced by modern day voice acting legend John DiMaggio who can also be heard in his popular role as Jake in "Adventure Time" as well as characters in "Wreck-It-Ralph", "Ben 10: Omniverse", and "Marvel's Avengers Assemble".
Transformers - Pretty much all of them. Had we not included Optimus Prime in our movies top 10 list, we certainly would've placed them here. Especially Optimus Prime slam dunking a basketball. Seriously. It happened and you can view it here. They could also be classified as an alien race instead of a robot…but that's just getting too deep for a simple list.
KITT - The car from "Knight Rider" was debated. Is it a robot or a car with artificial intelligence? We couldn't decide. Regardless, it's still pretty dang awesome.
Voltron - It looks like a robot, but really it's just five vehicles in the shape of lions that can join together into one giant galaxy saving hero. Since the pilots are human and remain inside the giant robot, we decided it wasn't a robot and merely a big metal vehicle. It is fantastic though.
