Well, unpopular because everyone here seems to go with the western ideals are Absolute anyways. I think the Hyugas are smarter with their selective breeding than everyone gives them credit for. I’m an Arab, and cousin/cousin marriage isn’t considered incest among us. All of Asia and most of Africa have cousin/cousin marriage. The problem comes when the relationships are too close, especially from the paternal side. So basically Hiashi wouldn’t arrange for Neji to marry one of his daughters, but someone who’s either from his maternal side or distant relative. This way you avoid all the birth defects associated with this type of marriage and preserve the Hyuga blood within the clan, otherwise the entire clan with have a problem right now, like a village in Egypt that married only within their paternal side and ended up with a population filled with birth defects. Hyugas wouldn’t want that.

  There was little memory of her parents before she was taken in… but those memories were warm memories. Mostly of sight and feel and audio. And one thing she would never lose attachment to was the language. She remembered the way her parents’ voices sounded, and yet she could never imagine them speaking in any English but in simple talk, for her to absorb and learn.    Kumoko could hear them in Anjyu’s words though. When he slipped into Japanese, she could recognize certain words and terms. She never understood them, but there was a tugging of emotion attached to them. Some things he pronounced differently, but it was still the same in a way. Maybe that was how she could feel so comfortable even when she didn’t know what he was saying.    “Can you read it out loud?” They had been lounging around for a bit now, with Kumoko leaning against the wall and Anjyu laying back against her knees. “I know that book isn’t in English… you don’t have to translate it. Just read it.” Her eyes never left the screen of her handheld console, though the volume had long been silenced.

His eyes jerk up from the pages, wondering where this came from, but doesn’t ask. He likes to think its one of the reasons why they get along so well. Their budding friendship of a few months sits on a series of interlocking unspoken agreements. ‘I won’t bring up your dead parents if you don’t bring up my all-but-absent ones’ is one of them. The beams shift and wiggle but their little tower never topples over.

Anjyu debates leveling an ‘are you sure’ stare at her, but decides against it. If this is all the payment Kumoko requires for making her legs go numb again, he’ll take it over a bop on the head with the console. 

Settling back into the quiet of the wall behind their high school, he starts again.  Backtracking to the top of the page, he tilts his textbook up a bit just in case Kumoko wants to see the thick blocks of complicated characters too, all names of post-war economic reforms. It’s another of his bland junior year revisions books. His words come out slow as he tries not butcher all of the obscure politician names.

Left-to-right, he weaves through the Tokyo Olympics build-up, setting up the high-speed rail-lines, and past the LDP scandals. Spurred on by his audience of one Anjyu continues long after the post-it bookmark at the end of today’s section, only stopping when his throat runs dry. 

“Do think any of the vending machines are still working?” After all of that reading his throat feels raw.

Chakra affinity horoscopes extended headcanon:

*Based on my headcanon that in the Eastern region some ninja believe chakra affinities dictate personality and your future similarly to how civilians use month of birth or star signs for horoscopes. Mainland ninja crossing borders has helped spread some of these superstitions.

Wind affinity- Seen as the element of hope. Individuals are often idealistic and are ruled by their hearts. It’s their double-edged sword, making them capable of empathizing with others and bridging generational divides but also leaving them hurt and embittered when their ideals don’t meet reality. These individuals are considered to be naturally lucky or talented, in line with their status as the rarest chakra affinity.

Fire affinity- Seen as the element of confrontation, also called the ‘war’ sign. These people often have a strong sense of right and wrong and are firm in their convictions. They aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo and don’t yield to others easily. This is also their greatest fault, their strong personalities include fiery tempers, competitiveness, and unwillingness to compromise. It’s said that these individuals are most at risk to become cruel or uncaring should their sense of justice be corrupted. It’s also said that individuals with fire affinities make the best soldiers and lawyers.

Earth affinity- The element of stability. Individuals are known for being loyal, stubborn, and firmly rooted to their social circles like family and friends. Supposedly they are the most trustworthy affinity and make great life-long friends (or bitter enemies), but trying to change their mind can be like talking to a brick wall. It’s generally believed that the earth affinity is most common affinity on the mainland. 

Water affinity- The element of change. People with this affinity are able to adapt to the flow of life and all of the twists and turns it takes. They are known for being survivors, able to make the most of any situation and come out the other side. This trait is also their downfall as they may also be indecisive or unambitious, more content to tread water and stay alive than fight the current. This can lead to the other chakra affinities considering them untrustworthy or as fair-weather friends. The water affinity is known to be most common affinity in nations with large water bodies or near the ocean such the Land of Water, the Land of Frost, and the Land of Hot Springs.

Lightning affinity- The element of turmoil. The newest historically, lightning affinities were often known as ‘cold fire’, until Tobirama (the nidaime hokage) definitively proved that it was in fact a separate affinity through extensive research. Perhaps its former reputation as a sub-affinity is why its defining traits are seen as less distinctive than the other four. It’s considered to be a combination of water and fire characteristics, varying greatly between individuals. These individuals are often caught between their ideals and reality. It’s often said that a lightning affinitied individual’s worst enemy is them-self.  The lightning affinity is considered unlucky people by some and is associated with danger, as it is the most difficult affinity to control. In their early years several of the hidden villages have had restrictions on people with it, especially whether or not they were allowed to practice medical ninjutsu due to perceived electrocution risks. Supposedly it’s also the only affinity that can be predicted. According to many chakra researchers having either a lightning natured parent, or having one fire and one water parent greatly increases your odds of inheriting this affinity. 

*Chakra affinities in predicting romance: Relationships are based on advantages/disadvantages according to the affinity circle. It’s said that every set of signs were one ‘defeats’ the other is considered a bad match, more likely to end in break-up or divorce. Matches between two of the same affinity have neutral odds; that is, that these ‘same signs’ relationships have equal chances of success or failure. The best matches are supposed to be between perpendicular signs (the one they neither defeat or are defeated by: an example is a fire affinity with earth or lightning). Because of their “internal turmoil”, any match involving a lightning affinity person is considered to have a greater risk of failing.

Then again, they do live in different rings of Anbu hell. "Incidentally, if you don't I'm not here and you never saw me. I'm supposed to be dead on paper for at least another month. It's the worst kind of mandated vacation ever."

Yugao glanced over, trying to place the face. “No, no. I remember.” A bird mask….Pigeon. Internal affairs, maybe? Now what was his real name again… Arata… no. Ayumu… not quite. Ah. “Better dead on paper than ‘final’ retirement, right Anjyu?” She said with a small smile.

“Yes. It’ll be a dark day when the higher ups finally dismiss me and I’ll have no choice but to become a radish farmer.” A wry smile ruined his ‘mock horror’. “That said, it’s always a nice day not to be dead. But who knows, maybe this is the last you’ll see of me. Apparently the dent I’ve been making in the records backlog hasn’t gone unnoticed. I heard Rabbit’s been asking my captain if she could do without me.” But that too was about as likely as it snowing in the Suna desert. After the uphill battle Captain Tomoe had faced finding squad mates he didn’t think she’d let them go so easily, even if he wasn’t her top pick, let alone the third choice she’d settled on. Anjyu could picture the dead-eyed face off now. “But if this is the way I finally get a promotion, am I obligated to find a way to ship flowers past the Kumo embargo line? I mean, while they did try to kidnap then kill me and sell me for parts on the black-market, I’d never have been given such an opportunity for advancement-” Anjyu barely held in a snort “-without them. I’m hardly the commander’s favorite person.”

“Well it’s not like the Hokage plans on being the voice of reason,” he snapped.  While the district rep had definitely crossed a line it had been for a good reason. There weren’t as many Senju as there used to be so why should parts of their compound sit empty while district forty-four was becoming massive fire hazard due to overcrowding? “And unlike him we don’t plan on just sitting around, waiting for the problem they created to cause a disaster. Who cares if that backroom deal would have stepped on people’s toes? Unlike the council meetings it might have actually gone somewhere.”

     Kumoko would be lying if she said she wasn’t enjoying this. As a child, she’d always been scolded about her temper, for taking inappropriate action. Hell, she’d never really outgrown that… Even though her friend was upset, a kind of selfish excitement had stirred up in her chest. She liked when she recognized that behavior in others. 

     “That’s why backroom deals stay in the backroom, Anjyu-san.~ The nature of a compromise is that both party, more or less, comes out unhappy. Of course speaking up about it would upset the representatives.” She quietly strode to his side, offering a touch to his back– and his pretty red hair– as a small comfort. “What do you propose, then? Will you ford to river, or caulk the wagon?”

“They wouldn’t have to be backroom deals if the council actually did their jobs and looked after the interests of the whole village, foreigners and clans-who-aren’t-the-Hyuuga included!” It went without saying that Anjyu’s angry rant couldn’t leave this room. He knew this was crossing a line, but he didn’t care. Being chewed out by a council member’s assistant had cracked the surface of years of bottled up resentment. Right now Anjyu felt like a pent up geyser and if he didn’t vent off some of the boiling rage he would explode.

 Lord Homura is very busy handling the village’s affairs. He could still hear the assistant’s soft spoken excuse ringing through his head, every echo reinforcing the apathy behind it.

Lord Homura doesn’t even have the respect to tell you this to your face.

He continued fuming, hissing out frustrated half-thoughts like plumes of thick black smoke. “ ‘Everyone is supposed to come out unhappy?’ Sure sounds like the council. Bargaining for lowest common denominator is the only option they ever consider. As long as they get what they want in the end they don’t care how many of their own get screwed over. It’s all for some greater good only they get to know about. Forget compromising then, how about blowing up the dam and clearing away all the obstructions?”

When I was growing up, there were these news stories that kept popping up in my life about children who would get swept out to sea, and the parents would dive in after them. I’d seen these news stories crop up again and again, and it made me think of this idea of the sea being this entity that needs a sacrifice—like, if it’s going to take your children, then you have to give yourself. It got me thinking about the power of water, like in Virginia Woolf, and that sense of really being overwhelmed by something. I also remembered this idea, I think from a childhood story, about a river that has to have someone drowned in it before you can cross it—like, if you see a river running smoothly, it’s because someone has drowned in it, and if it’s raging, it means that it’s still got bloodlust … It’s all very morbid. My dad always gets asked at parties, “What did you do to her?”
