Alright okay here's a positive thought: Ted's surrounded by reminders of his father in Kansas as a sign that if he stays he's doomed to repeat history BUT he's leaving and heading back to Richmond thus breaking the generational curse and exorcising the ghosts and demons of his past.

I really don't mean to be grim about the new season of Ted Lasso, Lord knows I don't want to be, but oh my GOD there are so many references to Ted's mental health being Not Good™ and it worries me.

Ted talking to his mom at the yard sale after going into his childhood bedroom and seeing all the reminders of his father and when he's talking to his mom there are halloween decorations - a pumpkin and a ghost - in between them in the frame and the movie Halloween (which famously features a pumpkin on the poster) inspired Friday the 13th which was the movie Ted was going to watch with his friends on the night he found his father's body DO NOT SPEAK TO ME

Also definitely do not like how Henry has a pennant in his room that says 'paint the wall' which doesn't seem to be any kind of pop culture reference but it is slang for committing suicide by gunshot which is exactly what Ted's father did...and later in the episode Ted reminisces about his dad and clearly has A Moment™ where he almost has a panic attack again while looking at his dad's Salesman of the Year plaque which has the final date of 1990 and his dad killed himself in 1991. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.

Ted's locker at the grocery store is underneath one labeled 'James'. His dad's name was Jim. James 'Jim' Lasso. Which could mean nothing.

Harry Burns: No, no, no, I never said that. Yes, that's right, they can't be friends. Unless both of them are involved with other people, then they can. This is an amendment to the earlier rule. If the two people are in relationships, the pressure of possible involvement is lifted. That doesn't work either, because what happens then is, the person you're involved with can't understand why you need to be friends with the person you're just friends with. Like it means something is missing from the relationship and why do you have to go outside to get it? And when you say "No, no, no it's not true, nothing is missing from the relationship," the person you're involved with then accuses you of being secretly attracted to the person you're just friends with, which you probably are. I mean, come on, who the hell are we kidding, let's face it. Which brings us back to the earlier rule before the amendment, which is men and women can't be friends. So, where does that leave us?

I'm gonna throw this out there: we know that The Flying Dutchman visits Rebecca in Richmond, and he attends one of the women's matches. Which means he's going to witness Ted and Rebecca interacting. Which potentially means jealousy over their friendship and the entire point Harry makes in WHMS could in fact come into play.

Ted and Rebecca were friends for a long time. And then they weren't, because Ted went totally MIA for three whole years, cutting off all contact while living in Kansas. Which leaves us with...hmmm.

Thinking about Keeley giving Ted a 'see you later' hug and reminding him that 'my goodbye hugs last for days' and how Ted and Rebecca's goodbye hug in season three lingered so long it seemed neither of them was willing to let go until Rebecca forced herself to...and in 4.01 their hug outside the jet is short and sweet.
