Using callbacks and parallels to the first season actually works so well because it allows us to get to know the women's team at the same pace as we got to know the AFC Richmond men. As Ted says on his walk to Nelson Road, 'I guess nothin' stays the same'. Then he encounters Wanker Man and says to himself '! guess some things do stay the same'. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

What it also does is position us as the audience in a then vs. now perspective, where we're immediately casting our minds back to how things were, and it only makes us more curious going forward.

The biggest thing it does, especially in these first two episodes, is provide the foundation for the rest of the season to build upon; the women's team aren't immediately presented as an alternate version of the male players, they're introduced as equals. They're a bunch of talented women whose stats and reputations precede them, viewed with the same scrutiny by the coaching staff as they view the male players, and then we see Ted diving in and starting to get to know what makes the players tick. And that's where we begin to see that while these women may be equal in skill to the men, their opportunities, their salaries and the facilities available to them are pitiful in comparison.

I hope that as the season progresses, they dive deeper into the history of inequality in women's football, because there's so much rich material to be found in that history that goes far beyond the surface level 'anything you can do, I can do better' feminist narrative.

The women's team dynamics are going to be so interesting going forward; sibling rivalry, a teammate situationship, whatever the heck Boots has got going on, the Shannon of it all when she eventually shows up, Dani Rojas' sister being the polar opposite of her brother (which immediately tells us they're not trying to make direct character parallels to the men's team and are giving these women their own quirks, neuroses and idiosyncrasies to make them independent and equally multifaceted characters)...seeing all of that play out both in the locker room and on the pitch will be a whole lot of fun, I can tell already.

The push-and-pull dynamic between Roy and Keeley is so back, and I love it. Yet another way in which season 4 mirrors season 1 - the banter, the obvious, sizzling chemistry that has you totally convinced it's going to come to fruition in the very same scene...and then it doesn't. They're playing the long game all over again, and the payoff is going to be even sweeter the second time around.

Collect small astonishments. The first tomato of summer. A dog dreaming in its sleep. Someone laughing before they finish the joke. The moon arriving before the sun has quite departed. We keep waiting for life to announce itself with trumpets, but it has always preferred quieter instruments.

In the spirit of feminism I think Ted Lasso season 4 should lean into the female gaze alongside the rightful fight for more visibility and funding for women's football. Sexualize those middle-aged men for me specifically!!!
