I bet the reason Jem hates lamb is because it was Kierenâs favourite and when he died Sue made it all the time and they ate it for like every meal for weeks and now Jem canât look at lamb without feeling sick and remembering how much of it she ate to fill the void Kieren left
âźââ
âź:Â How they keep calm.
Loud music through headphones or otherwise. If that doesn't work, taking a nap. If she can, finding someone to distract her--someone who won't ask questions or try to find out why she's upset. Just someone to take the pressure away and be there.
âWould they rule, or be ruled?
Jem's a lot more used to being ruled. And she doesn't trust herself to lead anyone, really. She doesn't think she has what it takes, or anything worth it. And while she's grown weary of the people in her life that have ruled, she's going to be very loyal to a leader she puts her trust in.
â Who inspires them.
The biggest inspiration to date remains Kieren. That CD when she was eleven changed a lot about the little girl on tiptoe, and she has so much respect for how gentle and kind he perpetually is. Other inspirations, however, include singers she likes--Maria Brink for example--because badass punk ladies are pretty damn awesome to Jem.
myfaxlt:
Standing on that dividing line - hell, it was the hardest thing he could force himself to do. You could claim selfish or maybe just self-involved, but it never really did have anything to do with that â- Sure, maybe he wasnât a follower, if anything he forced himself into the role of solitary leader. There had always been a purpose, thereâd always been a reason. Sure, heâd done the selfish things⊠Heâd walked down a line that ended in a domino effect. Pushing and pulling the ones he loved down the hole with him, except, they couldnât escape it with a pine box. Heâd put them â no, heâd put Jem, through enough pain and enough horror. The least he could do for her was to pull that selfish pariah out. To make a decision that truly benefited her. He wanted to do something that would help instead of collapse â just for once.
One of the few people he found himself thinking about in the treatment center was his sister â how he could even apologize for what heâd done, let alone how he could ever try making it up. How could he possibly try putting her heart at ease? He wasnât completely blinded â sure, the fact Jem was even talking to him again was a blinding god sent joy, but, he could still feel the doubt in her eyes. The quiet worry that seemed to eat her alive. The nightmares heâd put her through â the decisions heâd put her through. He could feel every single ounce of it. He could see the quieted fear and even the twinge of disappointment. Heâd hurt her so drastically â- it would never be able to do anything but haunt him.
The right thing to do was to walk out that door â let her live with the people that had actually lasted long enough to take care of her. Sure, Amy always tried telling him that their second lives were a push to do what theyâd missed out on â but, truly, heâd found that maybe, it was about making up for the things theyâd done wrong. â And the only way to make up for leaving her was to let her fly on her own. Let her continue on in solace with the people that embraced her when he physically couldnât. He may have initially gotten her off her tiptoes, but, he didnât keep her off.
Her declination made his entire person sink into the pit of his stomach, He wasnât even sure if his thinking was entirely straight â- but, she deserved so much better. Offering a slight smile he tried on insistence, ââ No really Jem, go get your free pint.â Those bias eyes were never going to fall on Jem, he wouldnât allow it. ââ Iâll be home when you get back, I promise.â Whether he knew what he was doing was right or otherwise was completely uncertain, but now it was time to cross the border line. All he knew was the sharp pain at the base of his person â and the crossing through the open door.
However, Jem had stopped him in his tracks â barring him off from what he may have thought was sibling compassion. There was a key element heâd forgotten â- Jem wasnât that little girl that tiptoed anymore, she didnât need protecting â she was going to take her own reigns. And maybe â thats entirely what he needed to snap him back into himself. No man on a mission bull shit⊠So torn between what was right and what was wrong. Small towns could do that to you â try desperately to mold you into the person they wanted you to be. Maybe, Jem was saving him.
Lips pursed ever so slightly so try to pull back the sudden ease of sharp pain into something of a withheld joy. Almost begging to do nothing but take this lapse of time to pull Jem into an embrace, but â baby steps first.
"â Well, I suppose if you donât mind a boring walkâŠâ he wanted nothing more than to let things fall into the rhythm they had once been. To be able to just â joke and smile and just, be themselves again. Maybe, that truly wasnât as selfish as he thought it was. â⊠UnfortunatelyâŠâ with the tips of his boots fidgeting with the grass beneath his feet, âCloud hopping didnât make me any more of an adventurer.â Trying at a small smile as the daggers behind those eyes seemed to loose their luster. ⊠Jem was right â- fuck it. They couldnât take him away from the small happiness he had left.Â
Jem watched Kieren hesitate. Her brother was all hesitation-all matter and no mirth, in invert a line Jem vaguely remembered having read in school--sometimes, and while it wasn't new, it had become a particularly clear part of Kieren Walker's demeanor the second time he'd been alive. She'd never thought particularly on how often he was pausing changing his mind, fretting it out until now. Maybe it had always been there and she'd taken it for granted, assuming she'd always have a brother, never thinking much on him. It was safe to say that Jem Walker never wanted to take for granted something like that any more. Standing at his funeral at fourteen had made a million 'I should have's' and could-have been's and 'Wish I'd done's.' It had taken Jem until recently that the Kieren she had now was Kieren enough to make all of those come to light, to make up for all the things never asked, days never had. That had been the biggest hurdle, truly, to getting anywhere at all. The question of who the boy in his room had truly been--an impostor would have been dispatched instantly and she knew that always. But the fact alone that she couldn't hurt him, bear to consider it truly; that had stayed, rattling around Jem's skull until finally she had to admit it plainly--this was her brother, and changed or not changed, he was back. It was always him before the world. Her personal life of late had enough marks to bear that true and Jem was finally realizing that she didn't mind that it was so. Who cared if someone who'd been kind once hated her for loving her own family? Why should she give a fuck what someone thought of her company? The pangs of fear surrounding the next time she might get the cold shoulder from one of the nice old ladies who always called her 'fine young lady' or other sentimental rubbish, or someone she'd nearly died for looking at her with a barely concealed scorn still stood. But Jem had learned the trick wasn't to cut away fear; it was to tell it to fuck right off. She followed him with sure feet and finally, a mind that was mostly sure. That was more than she could say for most things she did--navigating a hellish hall of a school, answering an order from someone higher up--and with it came a wonderful deflation. The tightness in her chest went from eighty to thirty percent and it felt like coming up from deep water. Finally, Kieren's cornered, darting eyes settle and agree on a resolution. Jem hadn't moved when he'd tried to wave her away--Kieren should know she didn't let someone tell her off when she's stuck onto something. Anyone could tell she did that, to be honest. And finally, finally, Kieren seemed to realize and relent. She was glad for that. No more fighting him just to do what she wanted, to spend time with him. It made her stop a minute, though. Her hesitation had been a decision to act, and damn what it said about her. It was a kind of deliberate statement and choice, too, to do so where anyone who wanted might see. Was Kieren wondering the same thing? Was he saying something, depending on whether he stayed or went? Jem had no way of telling, but the thought persistently hummed in the side of her head. "Still no sense of adventure, dickhead?" She tosses back. "Well, then, let it go that I'm real charitable for liking you anyway." She prods him with her elbow once, a good natured little jab. She knows it won't hurt, and it barely would have if he had proper nerve endings. But the gesture, she hopes, can hold some weight in jest.
That looks good on you
Random Number: 9 (hot pants and a crop top)Â
Kieren rolled his eyes at Jem crossing his arms over his chest as he tried not to jump out of the window in embarrassment while standing there in a bright pink crop top and blue hot pants that made everything far too tight for his liking. âGreat- now you have even more blackmail on me- thatâs just what I needed.â he frowned. He had been wearing the rather ridiculous due to a stupid round of truth or dare that went wrong.
"What the fuck have I just walked in on?" Jem is grinning gleefully, though she makes a moment of effort to hide it with a hand. Kieren is right--there's no way this won't come in use some day, she figures, and her phone rests in her back pocket ready to take any pictures she wants. But first, she has to get over the fact that she's just seen this. "Dressing up for someone, Kier? Don't know how seductive you'll be," she teased, making no effort any longer to appear serious.

"Fine, Iâll tell you. I stayed up to watch Batman Returns when I was 8 with mum and the Penguin scared me but I didnât want to admit that it frightened me so I watched the entire thing without a complaint even though I was spooked. That night I got out of bed to go get water and as I went down the stairs, I swore I saw the Penguins shadow so I jumped and fell down the stairs. I nearly broke my leg because of the bloody Penguin from Batman." he said, grumpily.
She couldn't help laughing instantly. "Oh my God, that's terrible." By terrible, she meant ridiculously amusing in how embarrassing that was. Of course, tiny Kieren would have tried to be more brave that his actual non-existent child-nerve had allowed. Jem, on the other hand... wouldn't have fared much better. Until she was twelve, it was ridiculously hard to get through anything featuring ghosts, vampires, monsters or even a particularly spooky human.Â
everythingwasfear:
The last line pulled a laugh out of Kieren. It was a pretty ridiculous fear, wasnât it? He realizes he wasnât making much sense next to his little sister whoâd just drank more than her regular amount of cider.
âGods, now I sound drunk,â He shakes his head. âMaybe Amy was onto somethinâ with that power of suggestion rubbishâŠâ
"Fuck, I don't know if getting drunk by thinking about being drunk sounds fuckinig awesome, or really, really awful." She thought out loud. Easier, sure, but then again, dealing with everyone who thought 'I need a drunk," instantly being drunk? Ugh, that sounded terrible. "Not saying do don' sound it at least a little, though," She agreed with her brother as an afterthought.

âNo, I meantââ Kieren explains to his into- xicated sister what one of his, admittedly, less horrific dreams was about, ââTheyâd decom- posed. I think Iâd left them in mâ coffin when I rose so when I got treated they were justâ unretriev- able. Thatâs like, an artistâs worst nightmare, yâ knowâŠ?â
"I mean. I guess." She's laughing a little, trying to picture what that'd look like had it happened. Kieren's face, more than anything, is what's funny. As far as nightmares go? Bland. But a valid worry, she guesses, if you're d e c o m p o s i n g and whatnot. "'M glad you still 'ave hands, though. It'd get really old if someone 'ad to zip all your stupid hoodies up for you every day." That, and she'd glad to have an intact brother, opposed to the horrifying alternative.

He chuckled. âItâs not that though you do have a point. If heâs so rich and all, why doesnât he buy a better mask and a voice changer?â he mused, wondering why he hadnât thought of that sooner. âI canât tell you because then youâre going to laugh at me and make me feel like a giant idiot.âÂ
"I'll do that anyway," She waved a hand dismissively. So, it wasn't at all logical, then. And it was something to be embarrassed about. That was only food to make curiosity a larger beast than it already was, and though she knew her brother surely knew that, she figured he also knew how powerless he'd be to stop her from asking. "So just tell me and get it over with, dickhead."
âIâm through with playing by the rules of someone elseâs game.â
"What does that even mean, Kieren?"
She had a thousand pictures in her head of what that could look like. The white face that stared into her now was the start of it. Jem Walker operated on a series of decisions of what to do. Sheâd oiled herself into a machine and it was simple; options. Narrow, narrow, narrow, dichotomize and act. When that wasnât an option, you attacked.Â
She was instantly edgy, hearing this. Jem Walker had raised a gun to her brother twice, attacked him a thousand different ways. Attack was never really an option when it was Kieren. Rabid Rotter, Cultist, Murderer, whatever guise he was going to adopt, Jem could only let it block out what he was to her for so long, ever. And yet somehow she had to protect or destroy everything, one way or another. What good else was she?
"Are you planning to do something, Kier?" She finally asked again, forcing herself to stop existing as a numb, dumb, staring thing. "Did someone else do something?" Jem did not shiver, but it was cold enough that she should have been.
everythingwasfear:
Endearments were almost always veiled between them; their exchanges the equivalent of affectionate verbal rough-housingâ and Kieren wouldnât have it any other way. He was used to it and adored it, unable to imagine anything more sincere. A silly grin made its way to his face as he held in a laugh. Seeing his mirth reflected on Jemâs face made him swear he could feel a warmth creep up his chest. It was the familiar swell of fulfilment he got whenever he managed to cheer his little sister up.
Beneath the smile, Kieren didnât even want to think of the serious implications of his promise. He knew about the ULA now and how theyâd probably still be on the misguided attempt to hunt The First Risen. A whole crock full of bullshit, Kieren thinks. And he wasnât shy about expressing his views to the Undead Prophetâs now ex-disciple he was currently dating.
He didnât believe he was The First but he wasnât certain about crazed cult members listening to reason. There was also the fact that people like Gary were still around; looking for an opportunity to pin the blame for the latest catastrophe on the undead; get them shipped back to Norfolk and all. Even against all the odds, Kieren was confident he was going to be able to keep his promise to Jem. Things had changed drastically in his second life and he now feared dying. Heâd seen enough deaths and sadness in Roarton to know about the pain it left in its wake.
The line about him being a good person makes Kieren huff out a breath in disbelief. His smile was less intense but it was still hugely fond, although he does look a bit incredulous when he answers, ââYou been talkinâ to Simon, lately? Because that sounds like the ridiculous stuff heâs been sayinâ about me. Honestly, you two should stop showerinâ me with undeserved praiseâŠâ He shakes his head as he recalls all the words heâd been called; âincredibleâ, âspecialâ accompanied by that laughably reverent look. And now Jem was calling him âtoo good.â
He focuses on the thank you though and it softens his features. He treasures it and he gets that sheepish look on his face before he tugs his sister closer.
"Câmere you sap,â He jokes as he pulls her into a tight embrace. He knew it likely didnât have the same effect, with his body temperature being low and not being able to feel Jemâs warmth, but it almost feels the way it used to be when he was alive.
Jem is selective with an outright compliments. They need to be saved, or they donât mean anything, get destroyed in a soppy mess of feelings that are too complicated to really express anyway. Between that and Kieren being Kieren as usual, she doesnât see the need to continue on with what her brother calls âpraise.â Itâs not a surprise, either, that what makes Kieren smile brighter than the waxing confession is the teasing endearment. The more insults lobbed at one another, the more alright things were in the world, in the room, whatever. Itâs the way Jem has always measured a situation. Banter was a sign of smooth sailing and less-than-end-times awfulness. And after a literal apocalypse of sorts and a personal one, normal, sweet realities seem better than any stupid divine revelation of any kind could have offered her. Sweeter than any sugared specialty is the taste of something familiar, homey. And then theyâre hugging one another, and Jem is squeezing him, which is more than alright. Touch, thatâs always easier than talking. Itâs felt, itâs not thought, and itâs so hard to fuck up a hug she never worries about it. Kieren isnât warm wam, but thereâs something warm there. She tells herself thatâs what matters. Doesnât truly make up for the feeling, as much as sheâd like it to, and she canât stop herself from taking a selfish moment, asking if it will ever stop mattering that even the most heartfelt touches arenât going to be backed with warmth or teases with blushing
âGod, she feels terrible for thinking that, why would she think that? Kierenâs here. Heâs the right Kieren. No oneâs fucking dead and maybe, maybe thereâs hope in the world? Right? Maybe she wonât be crazy forever and maybe sheâll be able to walk into a supermarket without wanting to vomit one day, and she can hug the brother she lost without closure once. That, Jem desperately tells herself is reason enough to give her no right to be remotely unhappy. Forcing herself onto other trains of thought, she pulls back while she can still stay smiling. Is she smiling right, still?âshe hopes so. Sheâs not sure if the fact that Simon and âundeserved praiseâ are suddenly so synonymous is sweet or extremely gross. Better than someone making Kieren unhappy, sure, but definitely something to tease about.
"Yeah, we get together and talk about sappy compliments together. Itâs a weekly âEmbarrass Kieren Club. T shirts anâ everything."  She rolls her eyes, prodding him on the arm. "But donâ worry, dickhead, Iâll still find plenty to dig at." There. Banter and insults. She makes herself keep that going. Keep going and maybe, maybe everything will stay where it is and be left behindâŠ

Kieren quickly draws his finger back at the bite. He proceeds to look horrified at the prospect of not being able to hold a pencil properly.
ââEy, donât joke âbout that! I once had a nightmare where I came back without hands,â He makes a sour face.
But then he smiles soon after anyway. He thought it was really nice to see Jem happy. Even if it was the giggly, drunk sort.
She can't decide if there's something funny in the plainly weird fear her brother had. Hands, after all, weren't in the habit of just vacating the body. But then again, there weren't exactly rules for how to come back from the dead. "They were just gone?" She's trying to reason out how the hell he had that specific fear, just bouncing about in his subconscious. "Where the hell did they go?" Yeah. There's definitely something funny, she decides. Who cares if it's a vaguely evil sort of funny?
