My Vietnam Highlights
So I have returned to my little island off the Swedish west coast. What started as a nervous trip with plenty of apprehension turned out to be the most rewarding and memorable month of my life. I checked into the hotel in Saigon first and flew out last (technically Carianne will fly out last as she is still holidaying in Vietnam).
I promised a list of highlights ‘Thru My Eyes’. In no particular order these are my 10 (+1) highlights.
1. My entry to social media (blogging and Facebook)
Social media was something I had little experience with prior to Vietnam. Never before have I blogged so I took this opportunity to enter the world of blogging. You can judge how I have gone. I think I have done ok for a first timer! Facebook is something I have not been interested in opening up except as a tool to communicate with my relatives back in Australia. On the last weekend (after many requests) I took the plunge and started to accept friend requests. Unfortunately it looks like I have been hacked!
I must say thanks to Carianne and Krista here as they are social media gurus!
2. Food and drinks
What can I say about the Vietnamese food that has not already been blogged. I ate a lot of vegetarian (a whole new experience) but also experimented with fish, duck, beef, clams, oyster soup, and much more. The tastes were just unbelievable. Special mention must be given to Vietnamese pancakes (who knew that leaves could taste so different and be so healthy) and the vegetarian spring rolls (made from scratch as we waited).
I got hooked on Vietnamese ice coffee (brewed coffee + condensed milk + ice) and Saigon beer. Did drink plenty of water as well.
In our teams final presentation we discussed ‘Building Relationships via Food’.
3. Vietnamese people
Whether it was the hotel staff; people we walked past; kids on the street; staff in cafes and restaurants or attendees at the community event everyone was smiling, friendly, helpful and talkative.
For a country that has suffered through so many wars and disasters the people are still very happy and always positive.
The young educated Vietnamese will no doubt continue the development of their country in the years to come.
4. TRUSTpay People
People are the most important ingredient in making a successful company. Based on this TRUSTpay are going to be very successful. The farewell party on the last Tuesday night will live long in my memory as will the wonderful gifts. Not often can you build relationships and friendships so quickly that you are made to feel like family.
The poster that you created and I acquired will take up a special place in my house.
5. TRUSTpay Collaboration
No project can be successful without commitment and drive from all parties. We achieved an enormous amount during such a short time period. This was only possible through the wonderful collaboration and teaming between TRUSTpay and IBM teams.
Here I want to make special mention of the input from Mr Eric (CEO) and Miss Lily (Market Manager). I am not sure how you were able to devote so much time to us and still drive the company. You 2 are great leaders and managers. Your staff have complete faith and respect for you.
Mr Henry, you are chairman of a very special group of people!
6. CSC Vietnam 12 Team
A great bunch of people (IBMers, translators, ABV) drawn together from several countries; with widely different backgrounds; varying ages and experience. For 1 month we were family. We lived in each other’s shoes; we celebrated together; dined together; toured and even shopped as a team.
I hope we will keep in contact. I hope you don’t mind me calling you my friends. As for the 4 (Krista, Phuong, Sahana, + me) in the IBM TRUSTpay team, I have blogged and thanked you so much that everyone knows who you are and how much I have treasured our time together. We will keep in touch.
7. Agile workshop
Since the day of the workshop I have not stopped raving on about the results. It was 1 of the top 10 career highlights for me. To hear that TRUSTpay has already implemented a couple of agile practices and seeing value is the icing on the cake.
Thank you.
8. Work room
This room had its own blog entry. Whether it was the Kick Off meeting; researching; SME community meeting; cultural presentations; socializing; white-boarding or just chilling out this room played a huge part in the success.
This room was the core to our success as a CSC team.
9. Final Presentation
I will never forget the final presentation. We decided as a team to make the presentation a celebration of what we had achieved with TRUSTpay during the 4 weeks. Sahana started by describing TRUSTpay and the project; Krista followed with the accomplishments; and I finished with a selection of photos, conclusions and recommendations. TRUSTpay agreed to it all which was for the IBM Team (all 4 of us) more than we could ever had wished for!
The emotion during the presentation was mind blowing. We were all holding back the tears. Since the meeting there have been many email discussions about it.
After the presentation was completed both Krista and I gave interviews for CSC and TRUSTpay. This was no small matter as we were already completed drained physically and emotionally.
The presentation will be posted on iRAM later but if you want an early look just ping me.
10. Farewell party
From entering the function room as rock stars to finishing dressed as Vietnamese farmers this party had it all. There was great food; wonderful singing; fun games; lots of photos and unrestrained laughter. MC extraordinaire. Driven back to the hotel by the Chairman!
Turned out that the organizing team had taken advantage of some of the agile practices they had learnt a few days previously! There was a plan; executed; success and no waste – good work.
I still have not opened my Message bottle as I need to recover from the trip first.
11. Me
I have to include me as a highlight. I have simply regained my enthusiasm for work and life. I have made many new friends; learnt new skills; began to understand a new culture; and practiced my smile. If this is what joining the CSC program is meant to deliver than I have graduated.
The CSC Vietnam 12 Team
Due to the nature of such an assignment I got to know some team members more than others. Here are my quick observations / memories of all 14 people (12 IBMers + Phuong + Phuc).
Ananya – Indian in Singapore. Snapping photos with his ipad and his laughter on the bus.
Carianne – USA (Missouri). Hair! Social media guru. Walking the plank.
Carol – Brazil (Sao Paulo). Three words that will remind me of her are Selfie; Fantastic and of course Hugs.
Elma – India (Bangalore). Friendly, smiling and I will always remember Business Culture in India presentation and India night. I am more than happy to help you with your certification package.
Paula – Brazil (Rio). The first IBMer I met in Saigon. Adventurer. Funny. Joking with Carol about best city in Brazil.
Krista – Canada (Ottawa). Friend for life; chilling out in Saigon on last Saturday; Her family.
Rafael – Peru via USA (Miami). Our food expert. Pottery. Eye for the scene (looking thru his photos).
Rick – USA (Nashville). Guitar; Vegetarian; ’Huge’ celebrity in Vietnam; Prezi (https://prezi.com/)
Keshav – India (Bangalore). Camera. India night. My snake photos.
Martin – Canada (Montreal). Fellow Rational and Cloud member. Traveler extraordinary. His wonderful motto.
Sahana – India (Bangalore). Shopping. Cooking. Stretching her comfort zone daily.
Phuc and Phuong – Vietnam (Da Nang). Our fulltime Vietnamese team members. Translating. Sharing Vietnamese culture. Laughter. Smiles. Great advertisements for Vietnam.
Thankyou Vietnam.
Highlights package - stay tuned
During this week I promise to compile my top 10 highlights package. Keeping it to 10 is going to be difficult! I will also share my thoughts (promise just 1 line) on my close friends in Vietnam 12. Each person has enriched my life. Stay tuned!
As hubby and I were eating an early dinner (no lunch), we saw people walking in hoards to the beach (Pham Van Dong Beach is across the road from us). I had read on Trip Advisor that the locals will swamp the beach in the early evening, and did we! We ended up getting our suits on and joining the masses.
The water was the perfect temperature, and you can walk out far. Only downside: Jelly fish. Got a tiny sting from a brush by.
China Beach is AMAZING! I can see why American GIs did their R&R here during the war!
So the beaches really are as good as Phuong said they were!
Da Nang bridges
Thanks for sharing photos of the bridges i heard so much about.
Check out from hotel with two awesome guys. Ho Chi Minh City airport…..first leg in the journey home.
Traveling for the next 24 hours. Sam will pick me up at the airport. How quickly things can change. Before I left he was about to take a driving course and now he has the license. Elin my daughter is now confirmed, sung with her choir and about to start school holidays. Proud Dad!
I have had the most mind blowing 4 weeks of my life. I have worked hard, done my best and enjoyed every moment. I have made great friends from around the world and Vietnam. Special thanks to krista - 'us oldies' have shown the way! And to phuong who started a little nervous but grew in confidence, excelled as a translator, became a key member of the team and a close friend to us all.
I will be back!
June 5 goodbye Can Tho
Just a short entry to say it is time to say goodbye to OUR home in Vietnam. I will miss room 501; the breakfasts and staff. Everyone has played a part in making this month seem like a lifetime. I gazed into that magical work room this morning and was thrown back to the initial kickoff meeting almost a month ago but seems like yesterday. I remember whispering to Krista that i was very nervous just before i had to present myself. Since that morning i have been in newspapers, on television, interviewed, called a 'rock star' and lots more. In the end it is about friendship and relationstips. The main thing i will take with me forward is those friends and experiences. Tears are flowing and it is going to get worse during the day. Life is different now. I am different now. I have come to understand what friendship and making each day count really means. Thankyou IBM CSC Vietnam 12 team (ibmers, translatorvietnam,ABV, TRUSTpay)
My friends
Thursday June 4
It is now 3.30am on June 4. I have had no sleep tonight as too many thoughts are playing with my mind. How quickly the time has passed.
We spent Wednesday morning preparing the final presentation. After lunch Krista presented the last session (Search Engine Optimization). Once that was completed TRUSTpay interviewed / filmed the 3 of us.
In about 5 hours from now we will head over to the TRUSTpay office to present our Final Presentation. This presentation will be filmed and I will be interviewed as part of a CSC presentation. I am sure the last activities with TRUSTpay will be emotional for all of us. While we created the final presentation we were all astounded by what the team has delivered during this short period of time. Whats more, we have already seen ideas generated thru the workshops be implemented!
Today June 4, is exactly 4 weeks since I left Öckerö on this adventure. When I said bye to my family that morning who would have thought of what the next 4 weeks would bring. I had heard and read quotes from previous participants that it was a life changing experience. Little did I understand just how changing it would be. I have been able to share and enhance my skills. I have gained many new skills from other team members (both IBM and TRUSTpay). I have learnt about many new cultures thru other CSC team members. Found out what a wonderful country Vietnam is and how truly amazing the Vietnamese people are. On a personal note, I truly believe I have grown as a person because of this experience. I have my passion for life back. Life after CSC Vietnam 12 will be very different to life pre May 10.
The whole CSC Vietnam 12 team have played a part in making this a memorable time BUT there are 3 people that have enriched my life more than they could ever imagine. I am talking about my 3 close team mates who I can call my friends - Phuong, Krista and Sahana.
Phuong, our very special Vietnamese translator (who handled the Australian, Canadian and Indian accents as if she was a native of each) and also a very special person. I will miss you Miss P.
Krista, our IBM Canadian guru who has inspired us all; I can not put into words how you have lifted me. I am honored to call you my friend.
Sahana, our IBM India adventurer; I blogged earlier this week my thoughts of Sahana. You have a special place in my heart.
My simple words can not describe these 3 people but they have been truly inspirational; supportive; funny; talkative; a shoulder to lean on; put up with my humor and weird accent; and shared the same goals and passion for this adventure. The success we have had with TRUSTpay is truly a team effort. I have made 3 very close friends that until May 10 had never met. Our friendship was built over a very intense few weeks but I hope it will last a lot longer. I could write pages on these 3 people as they have given me so much. My life is certainly enriched because I met you 3. My door is always open to you and your families. You never know when I will knock on your doors!
We will all keep in touch and as Krista says 'there is a reason for everything'. It is going to be extremely difficult to say good bye this weekend but I am sure we will meet again.
THANKYOU my friends with all my heart.
Great news from home
Sam (my son) passed both his driving theory and practical tests yesterday. Very proud! He has promised to pick me up at the airport on Sunday night. Life continues at home.
Here are some of the photos from last night’s amazing farewell party hosted for the Trustpay and IBM teams. It was a night to remember that was full of games, singing, dancing and of course food. I will post more later when I have time to write down all of the details and share more photos. Thank you Trustpay team for the beautiful messages in a bottle and a special thanks to Steven who designed the custom card I received. The Trustpay team is very special as they may be young but they are dedicated, smart, caring and driven. Mr. Eric and Mr. Henry are great leaders and I thank you both for being at the party and being such wonderful hosts. Lily and the team that planned the party and did all of the work - thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget last night! There were so many smiles and more photos than I think I could count. Watch for another blog with more photos on this.
Krista read my mind! Thank you TRUSTpay!
Sahana
We have all grown as people during this adventure but I want to mention 1 person who has amazed us all. I had the opportunity to introduce Sahana to the rest of the CSC Vietnam team back in March during 1 of the pre assignment meetings. After talking to her I knew she was technically skilled but I was worried that some of the cultural differences in Vietnam would make it very difficult for her. Added to that she had never travelled out of India and at her own admission 'Did not know how to have fun'. How wrong was I! During the 3 weeks Sahana has been a valuable team member; had a smile on her face; experienced many new adventures; taught us many of her traditions and listened and learned. But most of all she has learnt that she can have fun. During a short chat Sahana, Krista and I had last night I asked Sahana to promise me that she would continue on the path she has commenced here in Can Tho, Vietnam. She said she would and Krista is a witness! Good luck Sahana and thanks for your friendship. By the way I am happy to present to your team in India whenever you need.
Miss Lily, one of the management team of Trustpay, wrote this amazing blog from Trustpay’s perspective of our time spent working together. She has captured wonderful photos that tells the story of our partnership and the work we have accomplished together. She also captures the comrady between the IBM and Trustpay teams where we have forged friendships and learned about each other personally. This experience has re energized me and reminded me how fun work can be! Thanks, Miss Lily and Mr Eric and the whole Trustpay team for a life changing experience that I will never forget.
If Mr Eric, Miss Lily and the TRUSTpay team are representatives of the new Vietnam then the country is in for a prosperous and exciting future. Good luck.
The work room. As I said it could tell some stories!
Sunday May 31
Quiet time.
I am sitting in the hotel work room on floor 6 (this room has seen and heard so many discussions; so much laughter; brainstorming like nothing I have ever experienced; friendly chatting; collaboration between people that had never met F2F before May 9) over the last 3 weeks that a book on how to be successful in life could be written.
The reason I am working today (and the rest of my team will be upset) is that I wanted to start preparing our final presentation. While going thru some photos I noticed this collection that Krista has included as part of the TRUSTpay contents for the CSC final presentation next Friday morning. In 4 photos you can see the interest, excitement, willingness to learn and share, commitment, team work, intelligence, laughter, enthusiasm, professionalism and my favourite - FRIENDSHIP. We (IBM + Phuong) have shared a lot but we have learnt as much and our lives and careers are much better for it. Thank you TRUSTpay and Vietnam!
Saturday May 30 - rest day
Most of the team have headed off for a well deserved weekend away. I decided to take it easy and rest up, do some shopping and have a look around Can Tho. It is going to be a busy final week. In preparation for next week we finished last Thursday off by listing everything we had planned to do; what has been completed; what was scheduled for next week. TRUSTpay agreed with everything! We also noticed there was time available on wednesday. There is now a SEO session planned based on request from Mr Eric. We also received a very thoughtful and appreciated email from Mr Eric who is the TRUSTpay CEO.

The advices, feedbacks from you are the motivation which helps me to have more strength to continue my work which is also my passion. During the time we work together, I've tried to arrange my work, run the business as well as participate in IBM team's discussions, workshops... It led to unexpected delay, I apologize for that and I hope you can sympathize for me. I've had a lot of valuable experience from working with you as well as unforgettable moments. Thursday status
Thursday, May 28 started with us (the IBM team) facilitating a workshop on “agile” and “scrum”. The whole Trustpay team participated and were enthusiastic and engaged participants. We started the workshop off with an exercise where Robert made the statement “please use the paper and markers to give me somewhere to live”. The teams then had two minutes to work together to create something to show the rest of the group after the two minutes were up. Top photos are of the four teams and each of their deliverables of that first exercise. Great efforts by all teams. But we had wanted to live in a camper and none of the teams asked enough questions to get that specific in their responses. Then we walked them through the concepts of agile and scrum. After our presentation, we did a 2nd exercise where we asked them to use the paper and markers again but this time “get me from point A to point B”. This time all of the teams asked great questions while they worked through what the right deliverable was. All of the teams got the “right” answer - a bridge was needed to get from point a to point b because there was a river between the two points. It was awesome to see how everyone not only listened to our presentation but understood and then applied the concepts. Well done Trustpay team!!! You are a great group of young, enthusiastic people. It is truly my pleasure to have worked with you and hopefully shared knowledge and information that will help you all continue to drive your success and that of Trustpay.
I could not have expressed it any better. Thanks Krista. It Will go into my list of great memories and all time career highlights.
