coming back to this months later to add that my total adoration for this portrait inspired this addition to the latest chapter of my fic, as if the sea should part 🖼️

Thomas Burberry, founder of the British luxury brand, was a scientist as well as a businessman and his textile innovations allowed Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men to survive conditions that should have killed all who participated in the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expeditions of 1909-14. They needed the best and most technologically advanced kit available and that was made in London - by Burberry.

Mr. Burberry had patented a new fabric - Gabardine - in 1888. He effectively reversed the existing waterproofing process, by treating individual cotton fibers with lanolin (a wool fat), before the fabric was woven, and then repeating the process after the garment was constructed for maximum proofing. It was a revolutionary idea that made for more wearable, lightweight and protective outerwear, that performed and did indeed save lives! (FTP)
