another underdiscussed theme explored in deltarune is how adults fail children — not because they’re evil, but because they’re flawed, and they’re human (so to speak). alphys, a teacher, is afraid of susie, a child. carol can’t let go enough to give her daughter a house key, forcing noelle, who is afraid of her, to wait outside for potentially hours. rudy does his best, but well, he’s sick. there’s only so much he can do from a hospital bed, and it doesn’t seem like he puts up much of a fight irt carol anyway. asgore gets so wrapped up in finding a Solution To His Mystery that he neglects his family wholesale. toriel, again, does her best, but she fucks up! she locks kris out of their house and leaves them alone for hours while she drinks with sans. every adult in the whole town (except for toriel) has a terrible view of susie and none of them (including toriel!) seem to notice that she doesn’t have a home to return to. she’s a homeless teenager, and nobody lifts a finger. it’s so interesting and so heartbreaking. really well written stuff.
