to celebrate a whole year of robert’s return, @jackiemerrick and i decided to give in to our (lack of) impulse control and run a little event with the rather chaotic theme of ‘tropes, quotes & underused characters’

so here it is! the idea is to have it run as a weekend event but if you’d like to submit more or less than three fics then by all means go ahead! the prompts are all linked on random generators and you have to use minimum one from each but feel free to spin again if it doesn’t take your fancy (we’ll never know)

"Hello, Aaron," she says, as congenially as possible. "H-hello, hi, Mrs Brearly," he stumbles, still wide-eyed and blinking at her. After nearly a minute of a staring contest, she prompts him, "What can I do for you today?" Aaron stares at her, mouth opening and closing not unlike a fish, before he finally blurts out, "Have you seen Robert recently?"

This Is Me Trying

Written for the Forgot My Invitation event run by @robrondale and @jackiemerrick

My prompts were: big night out, "you can't carry on like this", Mandy Dingle.

“Robert?”

He blinked as he was pulled from his thoughts. Mandy was looking at him through the mirror, one eyebrow raised as she held the scissors in mid-air. It took him a second to realise that she had been talking to him.

“You’re quiet today.” Mandy said, her voice soft with concern. “Are you okay, love?”

“What? Yeah, I’m fine,” Robert replied, the words flat and unconvincing.

“Are you depressed because our Aaron is leaving?” Mandy was never known for her subtlety.

“I’m not depressed,” Robert insisted, dragging a hand over his face. “I mean… I’m not happy about it, but I’m not going to jump off a bridge or anything.”

“Why don’t we have a night out?” Victoria suggested brightly. “You haven’t left the village since you got out of prison. Having a few drinks and a boogie will do you good.”

Kerry turned in her chair, seizing on the idea. “I’m up for a night out,” she said, lifting her hands and admiring her freshly painted nails. “Show these bad boys off.”

“Do you remember how much fun it was the last time we all went out?” Victoria added.

“Yeah, it was great—until Kerry and Priya got us barred,” Vanessa said dryly.

“Oi, worth it,” Kerry shot back, before turning to Robert. “Remember you pulled that fit Irish bloke? The chef?” she grinned.

Robert’s expression flickered. He remembered how the night had ended. With Aaron’s voice thick with emotion, pleading, please Robert, will you come home with me? How he had fallen asleep in Aaron’s arms. Where he belonged.

“Yeah… why not,” Robert said at last, with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Anything to help him stop thinking about Aaron and his new life with John.

it's week twenty one and this time i'm going for:

It’s over. It had taken a while, but it’s over. The police had found Mackenzie, and both he and Aaron are recovering in hospital. They’ve still got a long road left to go, but they’re alive, which is the most important thing. No one really knew where John had gone off to, but with the amount of police presence in the village and the surrounding areas in the days after the whole thing went down, everyone assumed he had done a runner and was probably somewhere on the continent by now. Typical, Robert thinks. John had always been a slimy one, just slippery enough to not get caught, so it doesn’t really surprise him that his brother had avoided police capture. But he comforts himself with the fact that he would never have to lay eyes on John ever again, and is perfectly fine with forgetting he’d ever existed to begin with. He already had a complicated relationship with one brother, he didn’t need another one. After the gorge debacle, Robert is ready to move on from everything related to his so-called brother and pull the tatters of his life back together. Unfortunately, things have never been that simple.

unofficially dubbed 'stalker fic', i have honestly read this like three times already and it will be read again! genuinely such an angst-driven delight and the lovely, evil clara lets john live up to the gaslighting terror canon didn't quite manage

what was there before me

Of her stepchildren, Robert is the one Diane knows the least. She loves him, truly, likes him a lot (when he's behaving himself), and her heart really does ache for him when things go wrong. And somehow, for Robert, things often go wrong. Aaron is good for Robert. It seems odd to say, because her first impression of Aaron Dingle (Livesy, at the time) was that he was a no good thug, and that he was going to corrupt young Victoria. He's grown into a fine young man now, still a bit hot-tempered, but he's steadfast and more levelheaded than she'd originally given him credit for, that's for sure. He and Robert seem to mellow each other, soften their sharp edges when they're together, let a little light through the dark clouds that hover endlessly over them both. Which is why she's doing what she's doing.

Mack lets out an incredulous, humourless laugh. "Ha! And? Are you going to?" "Not likely," is the reply, Aaron's expression still careful, but it's enough for Mack to let out a breath he hadn't known he was holding in, and he looks down at the can in his hands, relieved. Still though, "Suppose you'll have to stick by the family now? Thanks for stooping to one last drink with me." "You know how it is," Aaron bites his lip as he shrugs, "Dingle Family Law… I'm kind of bloody sick of it, to be honest."

have whatever the hell this is

Carl has two children and trust issues. After the whole fake-pregnancy scam Chloe ran on him, he thinks that’s understandable. That’s why he makes Chas show him three positive pregnancy tests and still doesn’t really believe there’s actually a baby growing inside her until he sees it with his own eyes at the precautionary scan after she broke her leg. She’s ecstatic, clinging onto his hand with tears in her eyes and she’ll be in a wheelchair for weeks and Carl feels nothing. “You’re happy about this too, right?” Chas asks, holding a protective hand over her stomach in the passenger seat as he drives them back to the village.  Carl keeps his eyes on the glow of the red light they’re stopped at and doesn’t reply. Carl wants to tell his father about it first. He knows, from experience, that Tom’s enthusiasm for his grandchildren outweighs Carl’s disdain for the little fuckers. It’s Chas, though, Tom hates Chas, her family, Carl when he’s with her. He wouldn’t want another grandchild if it meant it comes with fifty percent of her DNA as well.

Aaron runs his fingers across Robert's neck, digging in where the lipstick is. Every spot he finds, he sucks aggressively, until any lingering trace of pink is gone, and is replaced by swollen red bruises. Robert doesn't protest - surprising Aaron a bit, considering how strict he had been about marks during their first affair. Not that this is an affair. Aaron pulls back for a moment to gaze into Robert’s glossy, blown eyes. "Everything you were going to do to her." "Aaron—" "Do it to me." He nibbles the edge of Robert's ear. "You understand?" Robert pants, breath hot on Aaron's neck. "Yeah."

here's a bit from The Fic i've been writing for the fmi event that i'm just. desperately hoping to have enough of to scrape something together to share by this weekend lmao wish me luck

"Hey now," he says mildly, "that was for Aaron. Maybe ask him before throwing it in the garbage." The corner of Aaron's mouth twitches. "I can get my own coffee, ta." "And you're lucky I didn't throw it in your face instead," Debbie adds. Which is a little unwarranted, honestly. Robert hasn't even done anything. Well, not today, at least. "I don't know what you're up to, but you better scram. And be grateful it's just us here and not Cain." Robert considers sticking around anyways. It's not like he has much else on right now, and antagonising Dingles is always fun. But he can tell he's not getting anywhere on the Aaron front, at least not with Debbie there, so after a moment of consideration he relents, taking a step back. "Give my best to my niece." Debbie looks like she's regretting not throwing his coffee at him after all. "Just get out of here." Robert smiles and tips his head. "See you both at the engagement party."

Wip Wednesday! Thank you for tagging me @robrondale, @barnbert, @dreamer-of-ships, @nerdyfangirl76 & @aaronsugdens 🥰

This week and especially this day don't sprinkle joy, so I've decided to share a bit from one project I really need to get back to.

They finish their ice cream and Aaron’s breathing gets easier, but just as thet raise up from the bench, Robert grimaces.

“Ouch. My face hurts.”

Aaron looks at him, alarmed, and he doesn’t know how only now he notices the unhealthily pink shade of Robert’s skin.

“Oh. Yeah, I-” he looks around, spots a lady reading a book on a bench nearby, a toddler playing with a teddy next to her, “Just give me a second, alright? I’m not going anywhere, just a few steps.”

He’s back in mere moments, clutching a small bottle in his hands.

“You got sunburnt.” he explains, popping the cap open, “And you can always count on a mother to have a bottle of sunscreen on them. Don’t move.”

It only registers to him now, that he is going to touch Robert again, and his mouth goes dry, his heart skips a beat in a way it absolutely shouldn’t.

“Do your worst.” Robert says, more quietly than Aaron would expect, and stays absolutely still.

Robert’s skin is hot to the touch. Tender, if judging by Robert’s soft whimper, and Aaron can’t stop himself from making a little soothing sound, pushing through his hammering pulse that climbs its way from his chest and up his throat.

It’s almost as intimate as that time a couple of weeks back when Aaron helped him shave, and he allows himself a couple of more strokes before be withdraws his hand and jogs to give the bottle back, the woman’s eyes glimmering and smile shiny.

“You look very sweet together.” she says, and Aaron only nods, lost and lightheaded.

“I know it’s hypocritical of me to say that, because I’m not exactly open with my feelings - but I’m trying. I promise,” Aaron paused for a second. “I’ll even start now. I love you, more than anything in this entire world, Robert, and I am terrified about the state you’re in right now. I worry about you all the time, and I’m worried that if I can’t figure out a way to help you, that you’ll end up in hospital - or worse, prison again. So I really need you to keep letting me in. Alright? Because I’m here, Robert - I’m never going anywhere.”

Robert looked at him, ever the little kid when he was crying, and upset. “Counterpoint,” he tried to grin, a little. “I’m terrified that if I tell you everything that’s going on in my head, you’ll run a mile.”
