Going ooc for this one. I am incredibly and deeply sorry that you lost your cat, and while it may not be much, I want to let you know that things can and do keep going and get better. Change is inevitable, and while that means good things end, so do bad things. There will probably always be days where you feel eaten alive by grief, but over time they'll start to lessen. I'm saying this as someone who lost my cat at the start of June. If it was within my power I would bring back both your and my cats, but the most that either of us can do is keep going so that, if there is an afterlife, they might not have to watch us continue to suffer for their sake. Please remember that it is okay to grieve, and try to be gentle with yourself while the loss is fresh

There's a lot of cool distros out there

If you want something reliable and simple I always recommend mint

If you want something daring, go with arch, Gentoo, or nixos

If you want something strange, see how far you can push containerization (use all the distros)

And there's a hundred distros, each of which fits snugly between these.

My advice: grab something fun and popular, and stick with it

Personally, @nixos-official is a dream, but doesn't have much support to get you going

personally i use fedora because it has great hardware support for apple silicon. i used to use debian but the packages ended up all being super outdated

That works! Nice thing is if you ever want to use it on real hardware you can copy the config to a new system.

That is a really good point. If anything I’d replace my server with it so it’d probably be a good fit for that instead of a rapidly changing desktop

If you get really into Nix you can make different systems that all use the same config.

You have a flake stored in a git repo. This provides different systems that you can install. Then you can setup conditionals so each system is slightly different. For instance my laptop has Intel integrated graphics while my desktop has AMD so there are some differences in the config for that.

That sounds a lot like config management like ansible which I really like. Just very intimidated by the tooling. I tried the package manager on macOS and it is unquestionably and by an enormous margin the most obtuse piece of software I’ve ever used, including writing X11 configs (with modelines) by hand
