yes albert, is he really what? the reaper? a killer? this bit of this conversation is interesting because it kind of colors albert's tone. albert DOES have his doubts about barok. they were friends for years and he knows barok was kind and good, but... that was a decade ago, and they haven't spoken again till right this moment, and also barok is standing off to the side with his back turned to albert* like either a vampire or a supremely awkward person. and barok is prosecuting him. anyone would have a tinge of worry, even someone like albert. he doesn't want to sound like he believes rumors about his old friend - and he doesn't, i don't think! not really - but the rumors do suggest SOMETHING weird is going on.

so then, this isn't a statement of full confidence, it's a bit of a question. albert thinks it's true but he would certainly like to know for sure.

i think this is exactly what albert wanted to hear. and if his doubt stings barok at all, barok hardly shows it, except in turning his head a little... but then, he expects to be doubted. albert's openness to believing in him like old times is probably more of a surprise.

*barok is a supremely awkward person, but my pet notion for why barok has his back turned is that when they were friends, barok didn't have a huge scar in the middle of his face, and he doesn't really want albert to see that, much less ask.
