@rocketsminis
Kingdom Death: Monster has arrived!
Very nice minis, although the detail isn’t quite as sharp as the standalone minis they sell. Glued these guys and gals (and lion) together as soon as I got the box, so now I can run the prologue.
Blue Petitgguy!
Finally bit the bullet and decided to try candy-coating with lacquer paints. Hot dang this was a lot of effort for a $4 kit! Great practice though, and it’s easier to accept the mistakes than on, say, a $40 kit. Started with an Alclad gloss black, then Alclad chrome metalizer (two very light coats), then several coats of Spaz Stix candy blue. White pieces were just Alclad Flat over bare plastic.
Things I learned: - I should probably at least consider basecoating the inside of color-mismatched parts - it’s really obvious in the seam on top of the head - Better yet, start with darker colored kits instead of one that is 100% white - I should definitely fill in seam lines or I will be unhappy with myself - More gloss topcoats, and longer curing times on them! Lacquer should be really durable but I didn’t wait long enough and ended up scratching a couple spots while assembling - Color matching is going to be really hard! I think I did either two or three coats of clear blue on each piece, but a few (like his right ear) ended up with a substantially different shade. - I need to get better at brush painting lacquers, and panel lining. I aborted my attempts on his nose and chest (respectively) and just had to clean it all off. - Dust and gloss paint are mortal enemies and I’ve already ordered a HEPA room filter for next time
Overall I think this turned out incredibly well for a first attempt! I am still going to paint like 8 more petitgguys before I even thing of doing a real gunpla kit
Scarecrow!
This guy was an experiment that turned out really well. I did some zenithal priming on this guy to define the highlights and shadows, then used repeated washes to color/shade the majority of the model.
The cloak, face, and hat were all done with nothing but Citadel washes. The pants were also washed but I did a light blue drybrush on top as well. Between that and the really strong contrast on the bones, this guy ended up with a neat stylized artistic look that I really like.
The Green Ogre!
This brute was a surprisingly fast paint. I thinned out some green Reaper HD paint for the skin and basically washed it on in two layers, followed up by an actual dark green wash. Drybrushed dark metal over black for the iron armor, then a bit of detail work and he was done!

The Pink Angel!
Final Guest Post! This one was done by @ratspeaker. I loooove the wings on this mini; they make excellent use of my new Citadel red wash, and I am generally a sucker for pink. The white cloth ended up with a cool marble-y look to it as well, making her look almost half-statue and half-angel.
The Golden Angel!
Guest Post weekend continues! This is another mini painted by @grungepopgay during a recent D&D mini-painting fest. The gold detailing on the feathers looks fantastic, and I love the bright blue highlight.
Lion
A lovely little lion, painted by another of my D&D players (he also did the Barrow Wight). I really like how the texture on the fur came through.
New minis are in the queue! This weekend is all guest posts, and they look pretty rad.
Planning to switch to a less-than-daily schedule (which means I can’t use the queue function, blegh), because I am out of painted minis and there is no way I can average painting 1/day. Unless you just want photos of my gunpla kits next.
Thoughts?
The Angry Villager
Well, uh, this guy turned out really well. I think there’s a weird paradox where I’m more willing to try new or risky techniques on models I don’t care about, but then when it works those models end up looking really great.
I’ve been watching a lot of mini painting videos by Tabletop Minions, and one of the things he brought up was doing stronger and brighter highlights. Even if they look like to much from up close, they hold up from several feet away, whereas more subtle highlighting tends to wash out.
So I went for much bolder highlights on this guys clothes, and it turned out incredibly well.
I swom to jon more photos are coming, just as soon as I fight the Four Divine Beasts and Kill Ganon
Midnight Piper
Guest Post! This damsel of the dusk was painted by another victim member of my D&D group. Don’t follow vampire floutists into the night!
I don’t think she was originally aiming for the rather cadaverous cast, but I think it makes for an intriguingly tempting troubadour
Khanjira WIP #3!
Finished basecoating this guy. Next comes the hard part
The Iconic Cleric!!
This is, unequivocally, the best paint job I have created yet. Here’s hoping I can do even better in the future!
The Blue Bard
This was @grungepopgay‘s character in our last campaign. I went all-out on the shield detailing and hand-painted each individual feather. The metallic details on the front don’t pop as well as I’d like though; could have used more layers or highlighting.
Watch out for Owlbears! One of the first large animals I painted, this guy awoke in me a burning hatred of fur and feathers (which is, I think, a healthy reaction to encountering an owlbear anyways). The colors actually turned out really well, and those eyes just take it to the next level
