The fact that Dan actually based ‘The Urge’ not just on their flat, which is more obvious, but also on surroundings familiar to him means something, I think. When writing a crazy fanfic about his best friend dying and being reborn as a vampire, he’s imagining himself walking down this street, lit by the amber glow of the street lamps. He’s imagining how he, and he as a character, would feel in response to Phil being dead, and articulating that into typed words. He’s put a lot of himself into this, and you can brush it off all you like but you cannot deny that part of Dan Howell’s mind was envisaging life without his best friend. That breaks me, and makes the fact that he included it in the book even more important. Sure, it was a joky thing and it was more than sort of cliche with a truly cringy ending. But he wasn’t just making up random places and writing about them; he could see this street in his mind, and how he would walk down it, how it was lit, all exactly. I can’t even put into proper words how that fact resonates with me.
