True Heroes: National Mill Dog Rescue
The first time I read about National Mill Dog Rescue, it was these pictures that got my attention.
It instantly gave me an overwhelming sense of hope to learn that these caring, happy people existed and they were out there saving animals! These pictures were taken on one of their bi-monthly rescue missions where they travel all over the United States to pick up puppy mill survivors who would otherwise be discarded (probably in the worst way you can imagine).Â
NMDR has been around since 2007 and have already rescued an incredible 8,900 dogs. They currently have 1,200 compassionate volunteers working for them. Truly amazing!
It goes without saying that puppy mills are horrible operations. Take the 12-second virtual tour and imagine being there all day, every day.
The dogs in puppy mills are purely there for profit and they're treated as puppy making machines, without proper care or affection. In addition, once the dogs can no long "produce", finding a good home for them is unfortunately not a priority. Thankfully, NMDR works tirelessly to ensure that they're kept in the loop and given the opportunity to rescue these retired mill dogs. Mill dogs have never felt affection, they don't get a bed to sleep in, clean drinking water or any toys to play with. They spend every single day in a filthy wire cage.Â
Once I started following National Mill Dog Rescue, I found that some of the dogs who were adopted due to their efforts had their own story to tell. One of my personal favorites is Harley, the adorable little one-eyed Chihuahua. He had a horrifying life in a puppy mill for a long time but thankfully, he was rescued, found a loving home, he is now a spokesdog for NMDR, spreading awareness about puppy mills and animal cruelty. You can read his story and follow his adventures on Facebook.Â
There's a tremendous amount of hope in the National Mill Dog Rescue story. More and more, people are aware of the existence of puppy mills and it's hurting the pet stores and certain breeders who support them. However, there's still a lot of work to be done which is why we're donating 10% of our sales to National Mill Dog Rescue this month. We love what they do and want to help.
Every little bit goes a long way, whether it be a donation, a social media post or simply educating the people around you. Visit the NMDR "What You Can Do" page to find out more.
To end on a positive note, take a look at this video of a puppy mill survivor walking on grass for the very first time after spending 12 years in a cage. It will melt your heart, guaranteed!Â
