are u sick of me ??? (would u like to be ??) (a high school!Simon x König fanfic) masterlist
Chapter 6
âI donât wanna be me/but Iâm going to pretend for youâÂ
Pretend - Alex G
Simon checked his phone for the first time that day as he walked to school.Â
Kyle Katarn: why didnt you tell us your dad left
Simon: so könig told you?
Kyle Katarn: Simon. when something big like this happens we want you to tell us. you havent been in a good headspace in the first place, and this clearly didnt help. we need you to tell us this stuff so we know how to help you. we want you to feel safe enough to tell us, if you didnt feel safe enough to tell us, please say so. we want to be good friends, especially to you because weve known you for so long. I dont want to have to find out about these things from someone else, i want to hear it from you.
Simon: what did könig tell you?
Kyle Katarn: this is what johnny sent me
Kyle sent a screenshot to the group chat. It showed texts between König and Johnny.
König (yay!): hey, i know this is kind of out of the blue. but since youre like simons best friend i thought you should know that hes kinda going through some shit at home
König (yay!): its serious johnny, i know he says âyou'll get used to itâ or whatever. but its worse this time. his father left him and his family. and then his mother tried to kill herself
Johnny: how do you know this???
König (yay!): i was in an empty room and then he comes in and starts crying. I asked him to tell me what was wrong and he told me about it. he cried for like 20 minutes. this is clearly taking a huge toll on him
The rest of the screen was cropped out, but Johnny never crops his screenshots.
Simon: where's the rest of the photo?Â
Kyle Katarn: johnny asked if you guys snogged
Kyle Katarn: i would be less upset with you if you guys did
Kyle Katarn: it kinda seemed like you did tbh
Kyle Katarn: you were kinda flushed looking and had your hood up and his hair was a mess
Simon: i laid down next to him and when i woke up he had put his jacket on me and he was sitting next to me
Kyle Katarn: thats so gay
Simon: but i dont think he likes guys
Kyle Katarn: i can have johnny ask for you ;)
Talking with Johnny and Kyle was easier today. Maybe it was a good thing they knew; they still didn't talk about it, but they were aware of it. It made Simon feel lighter when he was with them. Without the presence of his friends or music or daydreaming, Simon would probably have ended up in a psych ward. Maybe he shouldnât think that considering his mom is about to be out in one.
Simon was still out of it at lunch, though, but König sat with them today. He sat in Johnny's usual spot next to Simon, and Johnny sat next to Kyle. Johnny, Kyle, and König were the ones doing the talking, Simon just listened and added a few words. He was still a bit annoyed when they were being a bit too loud for his liking, but overall, he was feeling much better about their presence.Â
They were all walking together to their respective classes after lunch when König hung back to walk next to Simon.
âDo you⊠uh⊠want to come over after school today? To my place? To help me practice volleyball?â
Simon was a bit surprised; he thought for a moment. He should probably see his mom after school, but she did tell him not to come back. Tommy had practice after school, so he would get home on his own either way, and he could probably use some alone time. âYeah⊠sure. I'll just have to tell my brother.â
König's eyes lit up, âGreat! What class do you have last today?â
âI have physics with Mr. Rye. Room 308.â
âI'll meet you there, okay?â
The rest of the day went by pretty slow. Simon texted Tommy that he wasn't going to be home until later. He didn't get a response.
When Simon walked out of physics, König was already there waiting for him.
âDo you just not go to class or something?â The bell had rung two minutes ago; Simon was very surprised at how quickly he got there.
âOh, I do. I'm just quick.â
âWhat about yesterday? You were sleeping in there during class time.â
âWell, I had free period, and then I went to class while you slept. And Mr. Price let us out early.â
König led the way to his house. They made small talk about their classes and what they did during them.
âHow come you aren't going to practice? Isn't that your practice bag?â Simon motioned to the duffel bag across König's chest.Â
âWe had morning practice today.â
âDamn. And in the winter too? That sounds horrible.â
âIt's hard to get up, but I love volleyball, so I do it anyway. Also, itâs only fallâ
âWhat about ballroom? You seemed pretty⊠in love with it when you got here.â
âI like ballroom too, but we havenât been able to find any good studios here. So I'm probably done with it.â König sighed.
âIt's okay.â König shrugged.
König's neighborhood was a bit nicer than Simon's. The houses were about the same size, but the gardens were well kept, and the paint on the houses were a little cleaner.Â
âThis is mine,â König pointed to a house one house down. It was smaller than the surrounding ones, but it was very pretty; it had a nice white paint, with deep sea blue and dark wood accents. It even had a porch swing.
König nodded, âWe can drop your bag inside and eat something if you want.â
âCool.â König unlocked the door and held it open for Simon.
âKluas?â an older woman, around Simon's height, showed up in the entryway. âWer ist da?â
Simon glanced from König to the women and back to König.
âThis is my mom. Take off your shoes, please.â König said to Simon before turning back to his mom. âDas ist Simon, ein Freund aus der Schule. Wir gehen Volleyball spielen.â
Simon took off his shoes and looked at the floor as he awkwardly stood there, as König and his mother talked back and forth in German.
âBleibt er zum Abendessen?â König's mother motioned to him.Â
König looked back at Simon, âDo you want to stay for dinner?â
âUh⊠sure.â Simon was suddenly very aware of how he probably did not look very presentable. He was wearing his skull gaiter and his fucking Minecraft creeper jumper. His hair was a mess, and if he wasn't wearing his jacket, his scars would be out, and he didn't know how they would react to that.Â
âI'm Mrs. Walker, by the way.â
âNice to meet you, I'm Simon.âÂ
âLet's go.â König led the way farther into the house.
König cut up apples for Simon to eat while he went to his room to get his volleyball and use the bathroom. Mrs. Walker walked into the kitchen. Simon readjusted his gaiter to cover his face again.Â
âSo how did you and Klaus meet? Youâre not on the volleyball team?â Mrs. Walkerâs accent was a bit thicker than König.
âI'm not on the team, no. We kind of just had a run-in where a teacher introduced us, and then my friends have some classes with him. He also just kept coming up to me.â Simon laughed quietly and awkwardly.
âYou have no classes together?â
Simon shook his head, âNo.â
âYou like to cover your face, too.â
Simon couldn't tell if that was a question or a statement. âYes.â
As if on queue, König walked back into the kitchen with the same yellow and blue volleyball König had at his volleyball game. âMama, hör auf, ihn zu verhören.â His voice was light but had a seriousness to it that it normally didn't.
âIch versuche nur herauszufinden, mit wem mein Sohn rumhĂ€ngt.â Mrs. Walker held her hands up defensively.Â
König led Simon to the back garden, which had a volleyball net. Simon already knew the proper way to keep his hands for bumping the ball and already knew that passing the ball back and forth is called peppering, which made König happy.Â
König kept giving Simon tips on how to pass the ball better, and he even said that he thought Simon was improving quickly.
âWhat does König mean, anyway?â Simon asked as König set the ball to him, and he passed it back.
âOh. It means king in German.â König passed it back.
âSo⊠I guess you could say⊠that you're the king of the court?â Simon really hoped König got the reference. And König did; he stood up straight and caught the ball after Simon passed it to him. He stared at him with a deadpan look.
âHaikyuu? Seriously?â
âWhat? You don't like it?â
âI mean, it's cool, I guess. But I've heard that joke so much that it's not even funny anymore.â
âDon't worry about it.â König threw up the ball and hit a down ball.
They kept practicing until a man even taller than König walked out to them.Â
âKlaus! Bist du in einer Beziehung? Ist das dein Freund?â The man walked towards them and motioned to Simon.Â
The man held his hand out to Simon, âHello. I am Klaus's father, Mr. Walker.âÂ
Simon shook Mr. Walker's hand, âHello. I'm Simon.â
âMy wife sent me out to get you boys for dinner.â
Simon nodded, âOkay. Thank you.â
König and Simon walked back into the house and washed their hands. They stood in the hallway bathroom for a little bit.
âYour parents are so tallâŠâ Simon whispered to König.Â
âWhere do you think I get it from?â König glanced over at Simon. He had taken off his mask a while ago when they were peppering, but Simon kept his gaiter on.
âDo you think they like me?â
König shrugged, âThey just met you.â
âI know, but I look weird right now, and I have all my piercings in.â
âYou don't look weird. And my dad had piercings. You're fine. Let's just go eat.â
Simon nodded and followed König to the kitchen.
The dinner was chicken, potatoes with rosemary, and green beans. It was delicious. Simon wished he knew how to cook like that. König's parents asked them about their days and asked Simon about what he liked. Mr. Walker was a lot more talkative than Mrs. Walker.
âSo, why the mask?â Mr. Walker asked Simon.
âPapa, frag das nicht.â König's voice was serious as he stared at his dad.
Simon was slightly caught off guard, but he didn't want König and his dad to fight, so he answered, âWell⊠uhm, it just kind of looks cool, and then I sort of grew attached to it, and now I wear it a lot.â It wasn't the full truth, but it was still the truth.
After dinner, Simon helped clear the table. He always got a little nervous when König and his parents spoke in German; he was so scared they were talking badly about him.
âIt's still pretty early, do you want to stay a bit longer?â König asked Simon as he wiped down the table.
Tommy had texted Simon that he was going to stay the night at a friend's house, so no one was waiting for him at home.Â
âYeah, that sounds good.â
âWir gehen in mein Zimmer, falls du etwas brauchst!â König yelled over to his parents, who were in the living room.
âIch weiĂ, dass es aufregend ist, mit deinem Freund zusammen zu sein, aber lass die TĂŒr offen!â Mrs. Walker yelled back.
âWir sind nicht zusammenâŠâ König sighs and turned to Simon, âLet me show you to my room.â
König's room was decorated nicely. His walls were a super light blue color. On his walls, he had paintings and posters, but it was all very nicely put together, and he had the Austrian flag and the pansexual pride flag on the ceiling above his bed.Â
âYour room's nice,â Simon said as König opened the door.
Simon didn't really know what to say so he just stood awkwardly in the entryway. König sat down on his bed.
âAre you a vampire? Do you need express permission to enter? You can take a seat.â König motioned to the desk and the chair.
âOh, sorry.â Simon took a seat in the chair and turned to König. They had kind of run out of things to talk about after walking home and peppering. âI like your flags.â Simon pointed to the ceiling.
âThank you!â König seemed a bit surprised. âAre you, uhmâŠâ König was regretting opening his mouth, but he couldn't take it back now, âYou knowâŠ?â
âYeah, I am.â Simon laughed softly, trying to lighten the mood.Â
König couldn't help but smile.
They listened to some music from König's playlist; he mostly listened to German and American rock with some other random genres mixed in. Simon recognized some of the songs, all of which being songs he liked. They mostly sat in silence and just enjoyed each other's company, but they talked a bit too.
âHow'd you like dinner?â König asked Simon.
âIt was really good. I kind of wish I knew how to cook like that.â For some reason, Simon couldn't hold eye contact very well. He blamed it on his nerves.
âI could probably get my mom to write the recipe down for you, if you wanted. She would love that, to be honest.â
âReally? I mean- if she's willing.â
âYeah. Let me ask her real quick. You can stay put if you'd like.â König got up and walked out of the room.Â
Simon sat alone for a few minutes while König was gone. It was getting awfully hot in König's room, so he took off his jacket and laid it on the back of the chair. When König got back, he scanned Simon's arms quickly but didn't mention anything.Â
âMy mom says you have to go soon so we can sleep, but sheâll give you the recipe on your way out.â
They kept talking about random things. Simon learned that König has won over £4,000 doing ballroom competitions, he has a large collection of suits, and an even larger collection of ties.
König walked Simon home. He had given Simon one of his extra jackets to wear as they walked to Simon's house. The jacket smelled like pine and something sweet.Â
Simon was warm, even when he said goodbye to König and returned his jacket; even when he was getting ready for bed; even when he was lying in bed and staring at the ceiling; he was warm.
