while karim enjoys spending time in the ottoman court with his cousins, he brings with him his knowledge and curiosity about western ideals that selim would much rather him keep quiet about. it isn’t that everyone takes him and his ideas seriously — no, they all know that above all else their younger cousin likes the sound of his own voice, but it is more in the quiet rebellions where the trouble lies. karim has always been rebellious, to a fault, but recently that has extended to their religion. though he isn’t blatant about it yet, karim is incredibly intrigued by different religions and the interplay between his own. while karim mingles with the europeans, selim is more cautious and wary, which drives a wedge in between them.

the harsh clanging of steel against steel filled the courtyard, the grunts and yelps of boys accompanying it to create a discordant symphony. it was interesting to see them practice, to already see the beginnings of warriors in some, the development of cowards in others. some would say karim was just a boy himself, but the ones who did probably hadn’t run into him during his romp through europe. he’d left a boy, but now he fancied himself a man, a man with control of the games he wanted to play. turning from the courtyard, karim strolled along the corridor of the palacio, eyes trailing up the magnificent tapestries that adorned the walls.

the entirety of europe had been his playground for the past few years, and the prince had left a trail of gold, secrets, and misbehavior in his wake. he was the prince of one of the most powerful countries in the world, what was he supposed to do, not take advantage of that fact? now they had all gathered here…friends, enemies, lovers and family. it shot a thrill up his spine, to think of the congregation, the fun that could be had here. most were here for politics, but karim was here for trouble. too long had the monarchs across the three continents been stuck in their ways, stuffy and old, locked up in their towers waging war with countries hundreds of miles away. he wanted to unsettle the balance, make exactly the trouble needed to make something interesting happen. and so he would. but first, a snack stolen from the fruit bowl, and one offered to the person paused at the window, watching the boys in the courtyard practice for war. “with so much to do here, you would not think watching them fight is the most interesting. yet, it’s truly the only thing you can come to rest your eyes on. peach?” the words were said in portuguese, and he wondered if they’d understand him.

Selim paused, leaning against the short stone wall that barred those hard at practice from those not, his practised eye drinking in the form of the fighters with interest.  Selim, himself, had too much experience of war not to take some note of such activities.  His ceremonial scimitar, a gift from the Sultan, was a work of art, its pommel near as intricate as the fine words scrawled across the upsweep of the blade, but his war scimitar was another matter entirely: scars shrieked along the gleaming blade, each mar a ghastly reminder of horror, while the pommel was a practical ornament, its only purpose to keep its bearer alive.

These young men fought with the zeal of young men, untested but full of spirit: the rest would come later, Selim considered solemnly.  He felt a pang of regret, a sort of fear for the death of youth - not the physical aging, but the way hope and optimism withered up, or boiled into steel: the loss of organic hope, the loss of a reflexive optimism based on a viewpoint of certainty.

Accepting the proferred peach, Selim glanced curiously to his companion.  “Do you come often to watch?  I find it a melancholy sport,” he observed, thoughtfully.  “We practice and fight and fight and practice all to guard our lives, yet, no matter how much practice and fighting there is, many will inevitably still die of it.”  He glanced towards Karim, and laughed at himself.  “But these are the considerations of an old soldier,” he added, shaking his head.  “Not fit for a place like this.  What do you see when you watch them at practice?  Perhaps I could lean a better perspective.”
