“ah know,” jules nodded. she did really, she had grown up hearing horror stories abut missions going wrong and knowing that things were more often than not going to go wrong. it was part of trying to be a hero. “ah can’t imagine fightin’ my family” she speaks shaking her head though she knew that the other female had certainly been there. “that’s where my strength comes from,” she wouldn’t have been who she was without them. “it’s still worth it tho right, bein’ a hero ah mean?”

it was so hard, given their position, to not fight their family. family was everywhere. they had family in the brotherhood, family in the x-men, and everywhere in between. ❝ ah hope you don’t have to, but ya might. ❞ the best thing she could do as a mother was prepare jules for anything she could run into one day. ❝ it’s worth it. ah swear by everythin’ that’s dear to me that it’s worth it. ah wouldn’t trade bein’ an x-woman for anythin’. maybe one day i would’ve, but not anymore. but you gotta find your strength within yourself, because ya never known when you’re gonna hafta fight against someone you love. ❞

“I don’t think it matters, really.” Aki says quietly, doing his best to sound as casual and blank as possible about it even if he’s anything but. His father had always been careful to protect him from the possibility of death, no matter how dangerous things became in their lives. Not at fear that he wouldn’t heal, though Aki never really understood that. He couldn’t grasp why his father was so adamant about it… until he died for the first time on that metal slab in the Weapon X Program’s facility.

And it hadn’t been the last. Aki had died more than a few times in that hellhole, and now he understands why his father had kept him safe from death, healing factor be damed. “Didn’t you know? Takes a lot to kill us healers.” He grumbles, clearing his throat as his gaze shifts away from her. She means well, he knows. It’s not her fault. “Even if we stop breathing for a little while we seem to just.. come back.” How much of them comes back? Aki hasn’t quite figured that out yet. But it’s definitely not everything.

it takes a few seconds for everything to click. she didn’t know the extent of everything aki had been through, but in just a few seconds, the horror sets in. she didn’t have to touch him to understand what he meant, she didn’t need to absorb her memories to see the absolutely horrifying truth in his eyes. she’s not inside aki’s brain, but she does understand more than most. she knew logan. she’s had his memories floating around her mind before. she knows what it feels like.

❝ you’re still here. that counts for somethin’. ❞ she’s learned to find meaning in little words and simple actions. just the fact that he’s alive is meaningful to anna marie, even if he feels broken and fragmented. it’s a feeling she’s well acquainted with. ❝ ah didn’t know that happened. ❞ she knows there’s no need to verbalize exactly what that is. ❝ ah’ve never been through it mahself, but ah know what that feels like... ❞ she needs him to know that she’s there, and she understands. ❝ is there anythin’ ah can do to help ? ❞

her instinct was to protect the boy, and tell him there had to be an easier way, but she couldn’t be naive. as much as they wanted to protect their kids from the world, there was no way to keep him completely safe, away from all danger. ❝ as long as ya keep on breathin’. that’s the important thing. ❞ for people like them, breathing was the same as fighting. every second was a fight. they were demanding their right to exist. ❝ you always keep breathin’. ❞ the important thing was that he was alive.

tye didn’t hate birthdays , he just wasn’t a fan of it. before his dads adopted him , birthdays were filled with being alone in foster care and being neglected by the two people who were supposed to give him love and comfort. they gave him a toy and went back to the drugs and alcohol that took over their lives. sometimes they didn’t even give him anything. birthdays were bittersweet and reminded tye of his biological parents , whom he was taken from years ago. “ you really… didn’t have to get me anything , aunt rogue. “

the thing about the x-men was that it was more than a team. it was a team of misfits, and orphans, and weirdos who had no one except each other, which is to say, a family. whenever one x-man had a kid, they all had a kid. anna marie always took care of the little redheaded boy, from the moment jean-paul and kyle took him in. ❝ now what kinda godmother would ah be if i didn’t getcha somethin’ ? open it. ❞

“ma!” pascal practically bounces into his mother’s office, something held behind his back, wide smile on his face. “brought ya somethin’ for yer office!” he swings his hands forwards, holding a small bunch of flowers in his hand, carefully planted into a small pot. “flowers for ya! a nice fleur, i saw it in th’ forest th’ other day. i dunno what kind, bu’ it reminded me of you.”  

rogue had spent a lifetime compiling a list of all the things she thought she’d never be able to do with her powers. all the little things her powers deprived her of. having children was one of them, of course. there were far too many things they would miss out on, like having a mom who could kiss them goodnight. she didn’t know what she had done to deserve such wonderful little angels. ❝ they’re lovely, sunshine, ❞ she replies, closing the folders on her desk, as they were nowhere near as important as pascal’s flowers. ❝ we have t’find a spot for ‘em now. ❞

How were they supposed to know that this would happen? While maybe they could have expected it, Remy was too wrapped up in being able to hold the woman he loves to consider it. He wished he had done it longer, done a little more, but he doesn’t expect that to be their last chance at being able to touch each other. It was never truly a deal breaker for Remy, he wanted to be with her whether they could touch or not. He wanted to make it work, but he can’t force it. “We back to dis again? De cat and mouse game we been playin’?” He sits up now, gaze still on Anna. “M’not a stepping stone along de way, and while I’ve been wit many people, none of ‘em are you.” Remy looks away as he stands up off the bed, starting to pull his clothes back on starting with his finger-less gloves and then his shirt.

After all the garments were back on, he turns back to look at her. “Ya need to realize dat m’not just a fling. I’m your home, but you know dat when you love someone all de reasons why or why not don’t matter. Until you realize dat maybe we shouldn’t see each other – at all.”

anna marie knew her love for remy was stronger than her powers, and she never had any doubt about his feelings for her. he never left any room for that. love was never the problem. it wasn’t even her powers, but it was much easier to say it was. in truth, it was so much more than that. not being able to touch meant that there would always be space between them, something would always be missing. it also meant that someone out there could offer what she couldn’t. from the moment she saw him, she knew that would be her curse. falling for a guy she would never be able to pin down, and not being able to touch him. she never stood a fighting chance. she would always love him, but there were too many reasons to stay apart. to keep a safe distance. she was too afraid of what giving into each other completely could mean.

she sat there, speechless as remy dressed himself. there wasn’t much she could say. ❝ remy, wait. ❞ she finally spoke, clumsily getting up and pulling on an oversized shirt. ❝ you’ve never been a fling, ah’ve never- ❞ how could she argue with him ? they’ve been over the same thing so many times. ❝ what does that mean, then ? ❞

kaia’s mother had never really been in the picture for her growing up. not that the fact had been something he mind had a habit of lingering over but it did mean that her maternal figures had all been from her fathers team growing up. even then when so much had changed kaia still found herself looking up to anna like she was still a child. “i know, i know… but i mean it anna,”

messy and dysfunctional as they could be, the x-men were very much the village it took to raise a kid. multiple kids, actually. ❝ ah ‘preciate it, hun. ❞ she liked to believe she was a good mom, and she knew remy was a fantastic dad, but she would be stupid to think she’d raised her kids on her own. every one of her teammates ( well, most of them, at least, ) had a part in parenting the twins. she could only return the favor. ❝ so what’ve you been up to ? ya gotta keep me in the know. ❞

Remy doesn’t like seeing Anna so down, but he understands it must be frustrating. He got a taste of what it was like to not control his powers, but even that wasn’t anything compared to what she must be feeling. He could just be there for her through it, and hope that she would be okay. “Ya sure dat you are alright?” He says tilting his he’d a bit. “I don’t know if anythin’ about us is normal. What does dis mean for us, Rogue?” His heart still beating for her, but he doesn’t know where she stood either.

she wished she had kissed him longer. she should have known her powers were gonna come back, she should have held him closer, and longer. or maybe she should’ve stayed away, that way it would’ve hurt less. if she hadn’t had that taste of what a normal life with remy, she wouldn’t have missed him when she had to pull herself away. because even now, only a few feet away from each other, she longed for him. ❝ ah don’t know, remy. ❞ she sighed. that was always the problem with them, wasn’t it ? they couldn’t be together, but never apart. they were always in a state of uncertainly, always somewhere in the middle, never one thing or the other. ❝ ah think it means...we carry on the way we were. ❞

raven shrugged, arms out, “i mean, i’m never going to say no if you want to come back,” her smile wry however, and she can practically hear the answer, “but no, i’m not here to try and get you to join. i’m not actually here on brotherhood business,” of course, not that she wasn’t already bored without something larger to do. she’d bide her time, enjoy the proximity to her children and grandchildren, even properly meeting one of them, “you know, i am capable of staying quiet in one place. i’ve just chosen not to for most of your lifetime.”

❝ forgive me, ma, if ah have some trouble believin’ that. ❞ hazel eyes rise up to meet her mother’s, and as skeptical as she is about raven’s motives, the smile is inevitable. the girl can’t help but miss her mother. she reaches forward in a hug, closing her eyes for a moment. ❝ so you’re not here to kidnap or terrorize anyone ? seduce the father of mah kids ? nothin’ of the sort ? ❞ she asks the questions for reassurance; they’re only half a joke. anna marie knows what her mother is capable.

This isn’t the first time they have been through this, but Remy knows that it never gets easier. “You don’t have to lie t’me, if ya aren’t fine, y’can tell me.” He says with a sigh as he looks at Anna, wishing that there was something he could do. He wonders if there ever will be a day where the universe will be kind to them, letting them have this. Remy smiles slightly as Rogue finally looks at him. “Now dat don’t mean dat we can’t have fun. Sex isn’t de only way of having fun.” He says, almost reaching out for her, but remembering so he doesn’t. 

❝ ah’m fine, jus’ disappointed. ❞ she’s used to this, sadly. they both are. a lifetime being pulled apart by her own mutation, never getting too close to anyone. but she could never stay away from remy for long. every time they got the chance, they were back in each other’s arms, until something like this happened and ripped them apart again. ❝ it means we’re back to normal. ❞ the words have a finality to them which she doesn’t want. but there was no other option. to the same painful reality, always reaching out for each other, but not being able to touch.

The man had never been one to waste time, especially when it came to spending time with Anna powers or no powers. He was happy whether they could touch each other or not, it was enough for him to just hold her hand though their gloves. However Remy also loved the rare opportunities when they could have sex. She was beautiful, and he always wanted to make sure that Anna felt that way when they were together. There was so much love and Remy knows that it was probably obvious by how he looks at her. It was even happening now, but when her hand touches his skin that familiar feeling makes the smile fade. The powers were back, whatever happened seemed to have been temporary. He sits up, picking up Lucifer who had been sitting too close, putting him between them. “Are ya okay?”

sitting up, she folds her legs and presses them against her chest, one hand on her head as if to hold it in place as the memories flash throuh. ❝ yeah, ah’m fine. ❞ this has happened enough times already. it doesn’t faze her anymore. she hadn’t expected the loss of powers to be permanent ( she didn’t want that either, the road to self-acceptance had been long and hard, she’s proud of being a mutant, even with its downsides ), but she hoped she would have a little bit more time. or perhaps, that she’d finally mastered her powers. that perhaps the fact that she could touch remy without consecuences meant that she finally had some control. ❝ powers are back, ❞ she states, even though remy knows it already. ❝ ah guess our fun’s over. ❞ she finally looks at him, smiling at him with a silent apology in her eyes.
