Renaissance Art: Books
The poet is the most honest part of me.
A. Davida Jane, “An Attempt at an Explanation,” Every Dark Waning (via bluebeards)
And I still mourn the person I could’ve been; that gullible child that never grew quite right.
does anyone know where unrealized versions of yourself go once they’ve been killed? (✯)
' but you’re not particularly happy with where you are, either ’
He skips a rock across the lake’s glass water and follows its path with vacant eyes. The stone cuts and distorts the surface before a sad plunk sends it to its watery grave. There are ripples everywhere, not an area unmarked or marred. Charles looks down and finds the true reflection of himself. He wishes that one would kindly drown.
“It is better than where I was, as you might recall.”
Dark swells of thunderclouds bloat the sky into a grey sickness. It will, without a doubt, rain. But the rain that comes will not wash away the blood from this red, raw wound left opened, left unclean. The rain rides in to sodden the earth, mold the wood, and remind him that all hope comes with a cost that can never be paid in full.
He crouches down to pick up another rock from the thick, sandy clay. The grit cuts the skin beneath his fingernails. His hand closes around a semicircle and yanks it out.
“ – Do you think we will be capable of happiness? Deserving of it, even, when this is over?”
Charles stands and holds the rock close to his face, inspecting the flat surface and his own dirt-caked hand. He then raises his arm up and back.
“My God, think of it, think of it all… it has no end--!”
His body lurches forward, arm arching in the air like a bony wing. But the rock has already fallen from his open palm and hits the shore. He seizes up for a brief moment, limbs locked in confusion, and then in a flash his head swivels around, back and forth, madly searching for what was lost. But it’s gone; he settles on upheaving a chunk of stone the size of his fist and hurling it into the water. The crash reverberates around the clearing. Birds cry out in fear as they take flight from the crowns of the pine trees. Then, silence.
Charles stares down, chest heaving, turns his back to the lake, and walks back towards camp. He can feel Riario’s hot stare burn into his cheek. It’s better than nothing.

The poet, therefore, is truly the thief of fire. He is responsible for humanity, for animals even; he will have to make sure his visions can be smelled, fondled, listened to; if what he brings back from beyond has form, he gives it form; if it has none, he gives it none. A language must be found…of the soul, for the soul and will include everything: perfumes, sounds, colors, thought grappling with thought.

“I can cope with torture.”
Charles lowers his poised fist to where the threat of a punch still lingers. But he’s already done the damage; fresh blood trickles down Riario’s face, and coats his own knuckles. Rage goads him on, as if he could smack away the words that leave those blood-soaked lips.
He retreats from the onslaught in bitter defeat. It’s useless, useless, useless.
Roland:
In the clarion song of his own, true Nature, Roland has decided to find work, to find a mummer’s work in the glorious, threaded decadence of the France country. He’s a thought to find a lute, perhaps a book and pencil, to sit at a corner and draw portraits and good memories plucked from the twist of a customer’s hand, from the shine of their eyes as they recollect such memory.
And of course he would thread magick into his tapestry, to make it full and warm and Good.
He sits at a corner now, thread-bare and clothed in old, peasant rags, a book and pencil in hand and lap: waiting for the opportune moment to strike as a sneeze in Spring.
Charles wades through the heat rising from the cobblestones with a labored gait. The sun has no business bearing down its harsh rays upon the mountains, yet the fiery sphere hangs unimpeded in the sky. He prays for a cloud, a breeze, a bucket of snow to plunge his face in. A swifter path to relief, he thinks, might be to journey up to the forest’s shade and jump into the cool lake water.
But his self-imposed tasks bind him to town, and now the job given to him by his father calls him home.
He stops to seek a brief refuge in a tavern. Many bid him welcome, a few offer him a seat; Charles greets them back and softly declines, or he supposes he does. His eyes and ears are occupied by the stranger sitting in the back corner, and the questions beckon him closer.
Leonardo:
“Efforts are only valuable if they are being utilized, signore. In this case, they are not. I have time.” a pause, and a soft smile. “And I wish to paint your portrait.”
“Then I suppose there is no point in me arguing against this any further, hm?”
He offers a hint of a smile right back.
“Let me know when you want me to come in for sittings. I must make sure I look nothing less than perfect.”
And the night smells like snow. Walking home for a moment you almost believe you could start again. And an intense love rushes to your heart, and hope. It’s unendurable, unendurable.
