One would think that in this day and age recycling was something that everyone just did. Clearly filling landfills with product we could recycle is obviously not the best option, but still this isn't as common a line of thinking as you would imagine. Many companies all over North America do not have recycling program at their facilities. This blog is about one of those copies whose employees decided to make a difference on their own, regardless of company policy.

In our world there is rarely a shortage of great ideas to better the way we do things and lessen the impact we have on our planet. I’ve often read about organic sustainable substitutes for all the things we buy and discard of instantly, yet at the same time amazed by how slowly we adopt these wonderful solutions.

New technologies seem like this scary step that we could never take forward when its good for our planet, but something like a tablet which nobody even realized they needed until Steve Jobs told them they needed it, was adopted within less than twelve months as societies “must have”.

I’ve noticed that paper and plastic substitutes which would cost only pennies more per item have never made it to main stream. Even what we collect to recycle often ends up on landfill regales of our efforts. Just this evening I was putting together the recycling to take out to the curb, painstakingly sorting the papers out of the garbage at my desk ensuring I maximize my recyclable products. Even as I do my best to sort the batteries for proper disposal, as well as electronics and CFL lamps, it feels a bit counter productive as I see how many products we produce that either don’t last very long, have poison inside or can’t be recycled. It makes me wonder if we will ever really get it. I consciously try to buy right but it is so incredibly difficult it becomes almost a full time job.

With all that said I just wanted to share a great film with you. It shows a better way to lower our dependence on oil and help us to reduce the products which will never biodegrade. Plastic doesn’t need to be made from oil… there is a better way; we just need to be willing to make the investment in our children’s future.
