We've all seen it. Our friends and favourite Role Players announcing a hiatus for this reason or that. It is natural to want to take a break, even when it is a break from a hobby.
A lot of what I'm going to say is common sense, so some of you won't need to read this at all, but, there are some of you that might find this handy regardless.~
The scenario is usually the same, school, work or life in general is getting hectic and you're either finding it hard to find the time to come on and do replies, or, everything is so stressful that your muse is being a little hard to work with. We all go through this at some point or another, so please don't feel bad or that you're letting anyone down. You are not. Real life comes first, this is something that everyone understands.
So, what do you do if you're with a masterlist? Check the rules behind taking a hiatus. How long can you take one for and who you need to notify.
In my experience, I've found that hiatus times can vary, so it is best to double check this and also find out if there is a way you can extend this period if you find the allotted time is too short or you find that you need more time when your hiatus period is up.
Contact the admin. Let them know the date you have sent the ask (admins can get busy too and knowing the date really helps save confusion later on) and the date you intend to come back. It really is that simple. Don't ever be worried that they will be upset with you.
As for being an independent Role Player, the way to go about taking a hiatus can vary depending on how you want to go about it. But the bonus is that you can take as much or as little time as you want. Again, I find that giving a brief explanation as to why you are taking a hiatus (you don't have to go into detail if it is an extremely personal matter, just the bare bones will do) and put your notice in a queue, that way everyone will see it.
As stated earlier, most of this is just common sense and as such I am merely repeating what I have seen and done during my time in the RP community.
Lastly. Do not be disheartened if you lose followers during your time away. People will unfollow for a number of reasons and the trick is to not dwell on it. There will be people that will follow you until the end of time, so focus on the positive rather than the negative, and remember; you are wonderful, you are special and you are loved.
If you’re a writer with original fiction and want to include your work in a book full of the works of other creative individuals, check this out. Artists can join too by illustrating writers’ works as collaborators or if you’re multi-talented, you can write AND illustrate your work. Deadline to enter works is August 15, 2014. Click the aforementioned link for all the details.
Even if you’re not planning to participate, please spread the word by reblogging this and sharing the link to your fellow creative friends. A reblog or like doesn’t mean you’re automatically entered. It just means you’re thoughtful. :) Thank you very much in advance for your support and I hope to see your entries!
The weirder, the better. From the most bizarre to the absolutely unhinged- you can send it as an ask or send it as a submission.
Objects, pictures, plans, quotes, promises, videos, clothes, plants- anything.
Do you worst, and good luck on shaking my muse’s bones!
I love white-noise apps. Over the years I’ve come to the realization that I don’t work very well in quiet places, that’s why I always have music on at all times… but sometimes I like a little more~ When I discovered Coffitivity a few months back I kind of fell in love with it instantly :D
I mean, I love writing at coffee shops because they’re noisy as hell, and this app provides me with that when I’m stuck at home! I just like the sound of coffee shops, okay? Leave me alone.
You can find this cool app over at Coffitivity.com. They also have apps available for iPhone, Android, and Mac :p
1. Absent: preoccupied
2. Agonized: as if in pain or tormented
3. Alluring: attractive, in the sense of arousing desire
4. Appealing: attractive, in the sense of encouraging goodwill and/or interest
5. Beatific: see blissful
6. Bilious: ill-natured
7. Black: angry or sad, or see hostile
8. Bleak: see grim and hopeless
A weird thing I find incredibly helpful for art/writing.
Eplans.com is a website that sells blueprints for houses.
This might not seem that helpful but if you want a characters house you can make selections based on what sort of house you want them to live in.
Then browse through the results and find the house you want. Then you can view the blueprints and have a room layout for that house, which can help with visualising the space they live in.
Think of it like strings which connect people. Every bond would be a string, they are unique. They might cross, they overlap, but they are singular. They might get severed or damaged, but the fact that there’s nothing like it remains the same.
You would have a different appeal than others.
It’s alright to be jealous, that’s normal, but don’t let it get in the way of having fun, either.
Don’t let anxiety get you down because you have your own charm, your own approach, your own attack.
Just continue with what you’re doing because it’s your blog and you could do whatever you want with it, you don’t have to abide by any rules or norms or standards. No one is perfect, either, so all you gotta do is trust your skills more.
People would love you for you, not because you’re ‘better than this or that’. Keep being true to yourself and it will all come naturally.
--------There you are, chilling in your bed, possibly thinking about the mechanics of life or other important things like the fluffiest scenario for your OTP of OTPs or an alternate ending to your favorite manga--and GASP. You suddenly realize that you just can't fantasize about it anymore. You need to write, you need to see those scenarios unfolding, you need to test it out in the open, the urge is too great to ignore.
You slowly sit up and whisper to yourself,
'Damn it, I gained another mother&^%&^*$*&$ muse.
Go away -insert muse name here-.'
And it's a problem because it's either you have 20 blogs existing already, or, the fandom is too big and intimidating that you're thinking twice before giving it a go. Now you're just staring at Tumblrs 'Sign-up' screen, the limbo of conflicts between creating a new blog and letting the idea rest, ignoring the possibility of your new muse haunting you repeatedly in your dreams for the coming weeks.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I'd say, why not give it a try. Everyone starts at gaining a muse, creating a blog from scratch, following the other RPers they admire, poking other people in their inboxes for plotting. The most famous or the most private blogs undergo the same process, I am not an exception, and you are no exception. All we have to do is some prepping, some reaching out, and some trusting (mostly to yourself) to get things kicking for us and our beloved muse.
Fandom barrier isn't just a product of imagination: it's there, just invisible--but we create it for ourselves. Conversely, we could demolish it right away or fly over it. SIE SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE FANDOM BARRIERRRR.
Pointers? Remember these words: BREAK and POWER. (Yes I'm a corny person so I'll give you mnemonics lmao.)
Before creating a blog:
B
Breathe first and think things through. Do not rush. Upon gaining a muse, you should be able to visualize how to play them, what you want to happen to them, the possible universes that muse would be involved in. If you yourself aren't sure of things, it would only cause you negative vibes as you go along, loss of confidence and motivation. This is an important step to undertake, at least for me.
R
Read. Research. Reference. Gather background information. Role playing would stretch the limits of your muse's personality, and there would be some sort of struggle if you yourself can't predict his/her responses. There is no 'perfect' or 'best' response--role playing allows for some twisting and morphing, but if the jar from which you get your 'cookie of inspiration' is empty then your muse would go hungry and weaken. Before going at it, especially in mainstream fandoms, even the tiniest of foundations matter. Don't be afraid to read fics to get the feel and the gist of the character--just don't copy everything because it will confine you to a box and you'll depend on it too much; regret will follow suit.
E
Establish your writing style. Again, the issue of formatted writing vs casual writing comes into play, or grand narrative vs casual narrative. Don't be bothered by that. By 'establish' it means setting your own way of conveying your muse's thoughts and emotions, setting aside all other factors like fancy texts and formats. Would you write your muse with italicized internal monologues? Would you let those thoughts just linger between the lines? Those kinds of things. It's never bad to write test paragraphs in your free time to build your chemistry with your muse. After all, it's not just about your muse's relationship to others, things get affected with your relationship to him/her.
A
Ask for advices/mock rps, for they are hella useful. (This majorly applies to first time tumblr RPers.) If you have friends who write fics or roleplay, perhaps you could ask for some tips or have a mock-rp with them. This would give you an idea on determining your muse's interaction for a particular set of characters. For example, I have mock-rped my Cloud Strife muse (for a long time) with a Tidus, so I kinda figured out how his reservedness would clash to the other's vibrant attitude. Saves you a lot of trouble to be honest.
K
Keep the flame alive. I usually encounter this with my friends; they'd create a blog for a muse and then delete the following day because they lost touch, and then create it again--the vicious cycle continues. The thing is, starting over and over is a bitch (not even kidding). It makes you waste your effort. We don't want that. So before launching a blog, keep your newly-gained muse close to you for two or three days up to a week for a gracious grace period.
After creating the blog: (Yooooo! Welcome to the fandom!)
P
Promos. The first thing we encounter when we have a new muse (and we don't have any friends in the fandom *sobs*), it's that we're lonely. No playmates whatsoever--this is where promos come in, and they're an efficient means to say, 'Hella~ I have arrived in this fabulandia~' and get people get a glimpse of your preferences. If your likes and dislikes match, you'd gain potential rp partners and hence you could start your journey together. (If you need to ask for help in promo banners, you could drop an ask and we'd try to help you create it.)
O
Offer. Offer your muse, don't shy away from plotting. Respectfully. If promos don't do the trick, then don't be shy to follow others and visit their inboxes. Remember, if people had started roleplaying for a long time already, it's not odd for them to not pay much attention to their follower count. Lower our prides a little. It's not begging, it's simply giving a little nudge that you're interested with interacting with them, and for RPers, that gesture means quite a lot. It's courteous and they get to know you as a person so it's hitting to birds with one stone: you gain a partner and a new potential friend. Isn't that great~?
W
Welcome. This word entails different meanings, but it's up to you on how you'd do it. If you're new to a fandom, there's so much reluctance that it could suffocate you anytime, and in the end if you don't take an initiative at the very least, things would not be as pretty as you want it to be.
Welcome as in warmth. Post anything that acknowledges your followers, IC or OOC, thanking them for finding you in the vast fandom even if you're just new. You don't have to do it very grandly or pretentiously. Be yourself and just express it. Gratitude does wonders and it gives good vibes to almost everyone.
Welcome starters are cool, but as much as possible refrain from doing grouped starters because honestly, most people tend to look at that as 'lazy'. Doing starters one by one is more 'intimate' but sometimes are ignored for some reason (either unintentionally because they don't see it in the tag, they're buried in drafts, or they're plainly not interested) and will take more effort. Again, up to you.
(Related from the previous entry: you could hit up their askboxes, telling them something like 'Hey frand, thanks for the follow. Do you want a starter? We could plot.' This is more efficient in the long run, trust me.)
Most importantly, welcome yourself. 'Twins' in the fandom are inevitable and perhaps you'd go on thinking, 'they don't need me here, there are more quality peeps than me'. DON'T. That's bs-ing yourself. Roleplaying caters to different and unique interpretations of characters. No matter what happens, you have something to give, something fresh, something new to the table. Don't be discouraged. Think of yourself as a member of the fandom, because as cheesy as it sounds, it all starts from within.
E
Engage. When you're online, try to post opens or reply to opens if you find it favorable. Let's face it, staying idle and just watching from the sidelines is the best way to remain unproductive: you're keeping your muse inside a shell, and what's more, you'd feel very bad about yourself. Solution? Reach out and engage. Through it, you'd hone your skills and gain some character development bit by bit (think of EXP) and you get to enjoy as well.
R
Respect. For me, nothing could be a better bait for attraction other than courtesy from the mun (even if your muse is a dbag). 'Respect' is a two-way process: being polite to others would grant politeness towards you as well (most of the time, cause some are just arrogant lil shits--again, just don't mind them).
Realistically speaking, reputation plays a part in getting people to talk to us whether we want it or not--but keep in mind as well that you could be polite without not being yourself. It's not seen, it's felt.
It comes in various forms as well. Reading the 'ABOUT' pages is one, reading the 'RULES' is another, or being an over-all respectful person could do magic. Let me rant at this: this is damn important, so you'd know when you're crossing the line, forcing a ship, or the most often mistake, ROLEPLAYING WITH AN OC AND THINKING THAT IT'S A CANON CHARACTER BECAUSE OF THE FC etc. You can't deny that when people do that, you kinda get flattered because they're paying attention to you. Also, it makes interactions easier and you'd avoid awkward turning points.
Finally, roleplay for fun. Roleplay for fun. Roleplay for fun. Fun comes naturally and fun attracts people. (FUN is for you and me hahaha.) Don't be hard on yourself.
Receiving anon hate doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.
No matter how much you receive, when you know you have been doing nothing to hurt people—don’t let it get to you, honey. Don’t let it change you. Don’t let it make you think who you are not, because in the end, it’s just another person who’s preying on your distraught, hiding behind that anonymity.
They’re cowards. And you, even if you cry about them, don’t put yourself in the same league as them: you’re brave enough to address the issue as you, without any pretense.
You’re not alone, either. You have friends to talk to and support you through the worst. And if you feel so lost, just pause—turn off your device, take deep breaths or scream. Fear is normal, anxiety is normal, doubting is normal. Because you’re human.
What do you need? It’s positivity, it’s strength to get over those; if you’re running low on fuel to move forward—

It's Monday, meaning it's time for our first advice post ever! Today I'm going to be speaking to you guys about feeling insecure in the roleplay community. It's something that happens to each and every one of us. BUT, there is definitely tips and tricks to keep you smiling and proud of your character portrayal.
First and foremost, the main thing I've witnessed is that people get the most insecure when they see other people with the same character as them. This is something that's completely inevitable, and will always be a problem. I, for one, have dealt with this myself many times before. I still deal with it now even! The only thing we truly can do to combat against it is the fact that someone adores our portrayal. It doesn't matter the amount of followers you have. If you have 1 or 200, the fact that people are following and watching you write on their dashboard is more than enough to keep you going.
Another thing I've noticed is that people like to put themselves down for the amount of notes they receive on open posts. When you post an open and it gets 0 notes, that's okay. I promise you that you will continue living on to the next day. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you if no one has responded to your open. That should inspire you to keep on going, get yourself out there in the community.
Even doing something simple as going into someones ask box and asking them if they'd like to roleplay can help raise your self-esteem a ton. There will always be rude people who will turn down your requests. We're humans, and a lot of the times humans can be the cruelest creatures to ever walk the earth. But, should that ruin your beautiful smile?
N
O
There is always a reason to keep on smiling.
There is always a reason to keep on writing as the character you adore.
Never feel like you are lesser than anyone else because that is the farthest from the truth. You are a one of a kind individual, and whatever you do is absolutely beautiful. Even your mistakes are beautiful.
Keep on roleplaying and making the community a better place!
Hello there! I'm here seeking some advice about how to handle doubles. I usually play side characters or NPCs, so I don't encounter doubles often, but when I do I get so competitive and put out and I wish I didn't feel that way. I try really hard to be nice to my doubles and share icons and be friends, but there's always a part of me, especially when they first crop up, that's just angry that they exist. How do I get over this? I'd really like to.
That's always a very difficult thing to deal with. Jealousy can turn even the sweetest people into monsters. I'll give you a few tips that I personally do to keep myself in check. Considering I roleplay as one of the most rped characters on tumblr, it is definitely very difficult for me sometimes to prove myself different from all the others.
My personal favorite thing to do when I encounter people writing as the same character as me is following them instantly. Sometimes it's best to just have nice chats with them. You never know, you might possibly become good friends with them! It's always fun to share headcanons and your own views on the character. Everyone sees their characters differently, and that's the beauty of roleplaying. They could point something out that you might never have seen before. Or they could even help you with writing headcanons, or anything really.
Just whatever you do, do NOT let them get you down just because people may like their portrayal more than yours. It's an inevitable thing, and we're all guilty of playing favorites. There will always be someone that prefers you over another, and that's okay. We're humans, and that's what we do.
Keep your head held high, and don't let anyone else get you down. You portray your character perfectly fine, and there is no one else quite like you that portrays them that way.
