what if after job interview you catch a glimpse of the person’s notepad & see they wrote “things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl”
my dealer: got some straight gas. this strain is called “Unaussprechlichen Kulten,” youll be zonked out of your gourd
Me: yeah whatever. i dont feel shit.
5 minutes later: empty is thy hand! yea, empty is thy hand o faceless, many-faced king!
my friend abdul, pacing: to be a mortal man is to be a gnat in the eye of a great beast. we are insects. we are the dead.

I don't like it when people compare Rowling to Lovecraft. I'm all for dunking on Lovecraft but like. The dude realized he fucked up in the end. Rowling has made it clear she'll fight using her billionaire franchise power to the death to be a shithead and oppress people who never did anything to her
Eh, economically he changed around the end of his life. Still racist as hell, iirc.
The real difference is that H.P. Lovecraft functionally never caused harm to Black or Jewish people, despite his racism. He wrote fiction with bigoted text, sub- or otherwise. He wrote racist letters. He made Cosmic Horror with xenophobia baked into its presumptions.
He succeeded in materially harming not one Black or Jewish person. Ever. He neither lynched nor beat anyone (he was a weakling). He led no hate movements (he was an uncharismatic weirdo). He funded no hate movements (he was a pauper). He advised to laws (he was a nobody).
Rowling had funded ‘No Tr*nnies Allowed* women’s shelters. Rowling has set up and funded the ‘JK Rowlings Women’s Fund’, and organization dedicated to fighting against trans women’s rights. JK Rowling has happily, eagerly served as the figurehead of both British transmisogyny, and feminist transmisogyny worldwide.
Was Lovecraft as personally racist as Rowling is transmisogynist? Yes, absolutely.
But one was a weirdo shut-in pauper who died in poverty and obscurity (and agony) having succeeded at harming in any real material way not one single member of the races he despised, one is a world-famous billionaire who sits at the head of a trans-destroying hatecult which she funds with her wealth and lives in a fucking castle.
It would anti-materialist to compare the two.
Idk why but I'm FUMING at this revelation
"Hehehe. Hey, Lois! Look! I'm a shoggoth! Hehehe."

i think what limits lovecraftian horror from reaching the heights cosmic horror as a genre can reach is the formers frequent reliance on religious human agents. it cuts away at the indifference and incomprehensibility and renders it a bit banal, because ultimately you create orginised actors with a plan and agents and so on. Uzumaki reaches a higher level than this formula by having the 'antagonist' be a principle, not even a concept but a fundamental 'ness' of existence, without any motivation at all. the spiral simply Is. you have human agents who in some way encounter the spiral and are agents, but they are simply manifestations of the 'corruption' of the spiral principle. it is fundamentally indifferent. it doesnt have a name or a personality. the spiral Is
incidentally, this is why The King in Yellow is the best thing he ever wrote
Not to nitpick, but this phrasing suggest HP wrote the King in Yellow, and he very much did not. Robert Chambers wrote it before, iirc, HP was even born. It's the best thing CHAMBERS ever wrote, but he didn't write any other horror, so
What do you mean Ambrose Bierce just fucking vanished
they sent his ass to Carcosa
Would love to read The Great Old One’s Dictionary.
The thing about Lovecraft's work is that he did write about some genuinely fucked up critters, but he doesn't seem to have had a clear picture of which ones those are. "Dog that inhabits right angles" and "sapient colour" are treated as exactly as mind-bending as, like, "guy who looks like a fish" and "big penguin".
