The Black Widow movie highlights all the problems I had with the way Joss Whedon approached the forced hysterectomy aspect of Nat’s background.

As Yelena notes when she shows Nat her vest- the girls of the Red Room don’t have bodily autonomy. They can’t make any decisions for themselves. The hysterectomy bit in the plane acts as a very vile and vivid example of this.

Joss Whedon chose to put all his focus on the “no kids” angle instead of the bodily autonomy angle. In his eyes the horror was the absence of child bearing, not the absence of choice. To him- it’s a given that all the girls in Red Room would’ve had babies if their lives had gone differently- bc women who can’t have children are monsters and societal outcasts.

When Nat inquired about Yelena wanting kids she replied that she wanted a dog. I take this as Yelena doesn’t want kids, BUT she still mourns the loss of that choice. She resents how she never had a chance to come to that realization herself. Which, for most women, will hit home more than just “shes infertile and it’s the worst possible thing that could happen to her.”

Okay. OP, yes I do agree with you, that it should have been about bodily autonomy or lack there of, HOWEVER (comma), for Natasha it was about not being able to have a child.

Comics!Natasha facts

- born in 1928

- is classified as a super soldier

- has a serum that enhanced her physical abilities

- this serum also makes her body allergic to HcG the hormone needed for the body to not attack the fetus. Yes you read that right, the Widows' bodies have a rapid immune response to pregnancy. And they have to take a drug in order for them to carry a pregnancy to term.

- Natasha has always wanted to be a mother. Even in stories where her past is no no she's been raised in the Red Room since girlhood, she has had a strong maternal drive.

- During WWII (prior to becoming a Widow), she was pregnant but lost the baby (either a late term miscarriage or stillbirth, it's vague).

- in the Kelly Thompson run, they had to grow Natasha's biological son (Stevie) in an artificial womb do to her inability to carry a pregnant to term.

- in the Noto/Edmonson run, where Natasha was raised in the Red Room since childhood, she wanted to be a mother!

- in the Soska Sisters run (which is frankly one of the best lim. runs for the character), she had a strong maternal instinct.

So what does this mean? It means that MCU!Natasha focusing on the "I can't have babies" is a very real, very true to character aspect for her. She does feel "broken" in that way. That she's failing at some important aspect of being a woman. But that is HER PERSONAL feeling on the matter. That she can't give a partner the sense of family. And it has ALWAYS been a keystone of her character.

Now, Whedon codified it in the MCU and Feige slapped it to apply to all Widows, which is incorrect. It should have been about bodily autonomy. About the fact these girls don't get to choose to have their organs cut out (or their body allergic to a perfectly natural hormone). How Natasha squares with it, how she feels about it SHOULD NOT have been applied to ALL WIDOWS. Yelena should have asked the question: Do you want kids?

Because yes, yes, Natasha Romanova DOES IN FACT want kids.

Yelena doesn't. Yelena is canonically ace (she was also originally introduced in 1999 by Devin Greyson, and had a perfectly normal childhood and joined the military before becoming a Widow and was also trained by a pervert. But the point is Yelena originally introduced fully agreed to be a Widow. Marvel later changed it to be more inline with Natasha's story).

But circling back: yes the entire topic should have been about bodily autonomy, not Natasha's personal feelings on the matter. Natasha's desire for motherhood does not and should not apply to all Widows. And that was the mistake. They (Feige, Marvel, Jac Scheaffer) assumed Natasha was representative of ALL BLACK WIDOWS. When she isn't, shouldn't, and must never be!

Natasha's motto is: I am my own woman, first, last, always.

And to take her personal feelings on the matter of her sterilization and apply to all her Black Widow sisters is a slap in the face to Natasha.

I finally saw Brave New World. It’s definitely better than the reviews are claiming. I thought it was visually stunning at times! But… I’m disappointed

Thoughts below…

It’s helpful to compare to CATWS when finding the weakness in BNW and really most projects since phase3.

In CATWS Steve is able to win the overall political argument. He shuts down SHIELD and exposes the truth to the world. He changes the entire fate of the mcu. We see him inspire ordinary people to do the right thing. But with Sam, marvel hasn’t given him the same win. Sam challenges the status quo just by existing as a black man but now there is no third party (SHEILD) to take the fall. Marvel seems unwilling to challenge or shake up the government even when it’s fictional so the end of TFAWS and BNW does little to show a true win for Sam and his beliefs.

In BNW he is aiding the government rather than resisting it. While he may be skeptical or even resentful that doesn’t end up mattering at all based on how the film ends. The other option for Sam would be to follow CACW and turn away from authority but nooooo we can’t do that. At this point it seems that Marvel purposefully keeps Sam from being a revolutionary and it’s incredibly frustrating. It takes away power from the character and it poisons everything that follows. They are turning him into a figurehead of the state. like I can’t believe that reforming the avengers is thanks to an ORDER from the PRESIDENT of a corrupt USA.

What I think puts people off of this film is the same thing that plagues all marvel projects since endgame. The plot is tedious and often drives the characters rather than the other way around. None of the characters since endgame have been able to affect real change on the world through their character arcs and thus it’s been flop after flop.

Ao3 choosing to add onto a dogpile against a Black actor and his space in fandom when he is already being bashed by mainstream media and when he’s in the middle of the wrong place wrong time boycott due to another characters inclusion in his film is going to turn me into the joker. Wdym you're displacing thousands of already written Black centered works so that some made up racist #notmycap fan doesn't have an aneurysm? Implying that fans of Steve couldn't possibly be fans of Sam content and thus they need to quarantine him is actually so telling. They just assumed that Cap fans don't equal Sam fans and thus they don't want to see him.

Also the implication that PEGGY CARTER is a main character in the trilogy but SAM is not? Yeah Imma need answers. Ao3 choosing to announce this during the height of #notmycap and explicitly alt-right figures harassing Anthony Mackie for his statements on Captain America reeks of passive agreement in said anti-blackness. And if that wasn’t the case it’s almost worse, because it reeks of negligence and a refusal to read the room. Ao3 was unable to notice the dead horse while they ran to beat it?

Ao3 was unable to realize how racist it looked when they announced that they were going to segregate the Captain America tag so that the white character was the default and the Black character’s fans had to literally physically relocate using their own labor? And if I said “why don’t we ask the fans of the white character to move to the Steve tag?” Or “get both fans to move from Cap’s tag” everyone would act scandalized. Because deep down they know the amount of labor they’re asking of both authors and readers is obscene. Now, people attempting to read about Sam Wilson will have to physically look 10x harder for the content because you have intentionally buried his works in the improper tag and authors must scrub their works to tag him properly. Notice how this never happens to the characters that fit the comfortable default. It’s always telling the POC characters, OCs, or head canons to move to their own tag.

Jumping fans of Sam Wilson and by extension a Black Captain America with “and don’t forget to remind people you’ll never be like the rest of them!” When we’re CONSTANTLY harassed by that narrative is actually NOT helpful nor fun. Ao3 literally made a choice to remind ppl that fans would rather PRETEND that Sam doesn’t exist in canon publicly. And we’re supposed to believe that isn’t a massive error?

And he’s RIGHT. Fuck everyone who is throwing a fit over Mackie speaking the truth. He and Chris Evans know this role better than anyone. Captain America is a figure of American propaganda both in the real world and in the MCU, despite how the characters Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson and actors Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie feel. If you just see the red, white and blue, the propaganda, and not what these characters have stood for, that’s on you. And if you think that America represents honor and dignity for everyone, wake the fuck up. Honestly, just look out the window.
