Sometimes homeless people will be off-putting and rude and demand more of your attention than you're comfortable giving. I promise you, if you had to deal with a fraction of what they do on a daily basis, you'd become off-putting too. Sit with your discomfort and direct your anger at the systems which made them homeless, not at the person in front of you who is struggling.

I come across a lot of homeless people in my job and they can be extremely unpleasant. They can be rude and quick to anger, even verbally abusive and physically violent. But they’ve been moulded that way by mistreatment from a system that’s content for them to rot. For a lot of homeless people, there is a fairly identical cycle:

Life on the streets -> addiction -> crime -> prison -> life on the streets.

The amount of people I see come out of prison having gotten sober and made changes (successfully!) only to be forced back into the cycle because the support for them is minimal is heartbreaking.

Some people have high paying jobs, two holidays a year, and a loving family and still shout at retail workers. If I existed in the system homeless people do, I’d be fucking rude sometimes too.
