Colin fully believed he was not the jealous type. He did not care that Marina loved another. He was hanging by a thread seeing Penelope flirt with suitors, but she didn't show interest beyond wanting to practice their lessons. Then Penelope calls Debling "not unpleasant to gaze upon" and suddenly he wanna kill himself.
PERIOD DRAMA APPRECIATION WEEK Day 4: Favorite Relationship ↳ THE BRIDGERTONS
Have a Pen's smile to make your day more bright.
Riddle me this: Debling tells Penelope that he has no room in his heart to love her, and was stone faced when he saw this, a bridal angel princess from heaven, when he had received Portia’s permission to propose:
because his work took up too much space in his heart. For reference, this is the great auk that filled his heart and left no room for Pen:
He thought it was touching that great auks mate for life but Pen should be grateful to be in a loveless, lonely marriage, “have hobbies”, run his estate, and produce an heir while he galavants a year’s journey away to make googly eyes at the great love story that is Mr and Mrs Auk.
Guess what, buddy, the great auk went extinct shortly thereafter, much like you on your doomed mission through the Northwest Passage.
And Colin had Pen locked down within 30 minutes of the worst decision of your life.
Colin is crazy for this and I love it. I don’t think any man in 1815 had such a chaotic 18 hours. He is so fucking proud of himself.
After he swooped in like a madman and straight up stole Pen from Debling the night before, he played out his heroic fantasy by standing up for Pen to Portia the next morning. Then he proceeded to take her to their future home alone, watch himself unwrap the parts he’s been dreaming about in the 🪞, popped her 🍒, rang her 🔔, and put the next Baron Featherington 🍞 in her oven.
This is why we were shown the fake swagger in 3.01 so we could see the real swagger in 3.05.
I’m not even mad at the brothel scenes. Never have been because of this moment.
His breathlessness, the adorable dramatic disappointed sigh, his wide-eyed almost adolescent expression, and the sweetness and youthful eagerness in the delivery of perhaps my favorite line of the season are so virgin-coded.
This wasn’t just Pen’s first moment of physical intimacy and connection. It was also Colin’s.
Knowing Pen lied to him was truly Colin's nightmare come true in many ways, because of his past experience, but it's deeper because he actually truly loves Pen and she wouldn't lie to him because she's Pen, and Pen is special, but the the more you watch, the heartbreak shapes more clearly. Colin's expressions and his questions, the many times he's asked Penelope if she's sure of her feelings, if she regrets getting engaged, if she doesn't return his feelings for now...everytime Colin notices she has something to tell him, that he can feel it, he's expecting her to say she doesn't love him, that he indeed is not enough on his own, not worthy. When she's 'sick' and he wants to be near her..."perhaps she's trying to keep me at distance and is regretting", he's so unsure. Her confession at the church, that follows him once again asking her, telling "if you'll still have me?" and clearly bracing himself for some type of rejection, gives him a bit of peace, he starts to believe and is so giddy. At the Mondrichs ball, he's so happy when she tells him he's worthy. It breaks my heart for what's to come. His world came crashing down, because if she lied about that, if she - even if deep down he knows it's true, and that's why it hurts more, because she sees him negatively, she knows his mask and what's hiding - said those things about him in her Column, then she likely doesn't love him, not really, not in the way he loves her. It's hammering in his head: "Why would she love me?, and then, everything that happens make it worse, because - to him - he doesn't seem to be able to show to her his value, to prove to her he deserves love, because she seems to not need him, he's unable to help her in an effective manner and he feels like a failure as her husband, unsure of himself and mistrustful of her loving him. That's why Pen's words to him at Francesca's wedding makes me so emotional. I am in love with her words, how she tells him her needs and how his love is important to her on its own, and how can he show her that love the best/the best way to show it, what she doesn't need, what he doesn't need to do, that he actually excels at loving her when he simply loves her. It's in his special smiles to her, in their little jokes together, it's in the way he made love to her, in the way he gazes at her, how he makes her feel beautiful, in the way he dances with her, how happy it makes them to be together, how they can be silly together, how he kisses and holds her. It's curious because Penelope doesn't seem to doubt his love is there anymore, their dynamic here has shifted ( until ep5, she was also very insecure) , despite their issues, have you notice that? She just wants him to allow himself to show, she wants him to want to love her, she knows it's there, she wants him to act on his love and show her, in the many ways he's so perfect in showing her, so that she can show him back and make him feel loved too. Her offering the annulment was about protecting him and his family and a way to tell him: You don't have to keep on loving me, to be by my side, if i don't make you happy with my love, if you don't want to, if you are scared, in pain. But of course he wants to. He'll always want to and seeing her being so brave, makes him brave too, brave to let himself believe, to accept and let his heart melt away the protections he built with his hurt, makes him understand, deep inside of him, she loves him, that brilliant woman loves him and her light, as he said, will never hurt him, it was never meant to hurt him, instead it will always brighten up his path. She exposed herself out of love, for herself, for him, for his family and he exposed all his feelings right back to her, his insecurities and his love, he finally felt with certain how much he is loved, and it's every bit as much as he loves her. And he knows how vast that is.
Colin: respect my space , I am #angryandbetrayed 😡😠
Pen: okay , I will take a separate carriage #boybye 😒🙄👋🏻
Colin: Wait, what ?! I meant I wanted to be mad but also breathe your air constantly come back I love you what have I done not the separate carriages 🥺🥺🥺
#shared carriages are their kink
#well well if it isn't the consequence of my own actions
#why does disheveled Colin look so sexy tho
#the point in a fight when you switch from being mad at your boo to being mad at yourself #a Bridgerton family trait #i.e., Eloise #see also Anthony
Perhaps your life might be easier if you pursued someone with a less disagreeable sister.
On the last day of Pride Month, I gotta say that Nicola’s curves and the way she kisses have me in a chokehold. And Luke’s eyes, the way they convey such complex, heart-wrenchingly beautiful emotions have left me in a six week swoon.
Luke T’s first kiss with a man was scorching hot, Hannah is an angel princess about to go on quite the journey, and Masali is so stunning I literary screamed when she first appeared on the screen. It’s an incredible time to be bisexual, my lovelies.
Cressida’s redemption arc took a nose dive in Part 2. (To be fair, redemption should be the last thing on her mind when she’s faced with 4-5 pregnancies with Lord Crypt Keeper).
But the FEATHERINGTON redemption arc was a thing of beauty which I enjoyed immensely.
Portia humbled. Proud of Penelope. Comes to believe in love as she is increasingly enchanted by Polin. Thinking she was nothing like her youngest daughter, only to discover that they are both crafty, clever, ambitious survivors.
Prudence working through her initial jealousy of Penelope to be genuinely moved at the wedding, seeing her sister as lovely and having the courage and maturity to tell her so. Realizing that Penelope’s happiness is something that can be shared, not just scorned or dismissed.
Philippa’s genius idea of the “bugs” and her masterful timing of the butterfly release after Pen’s speech and tense interaction with the Queen. Hoping her daughter becomes a famous writer like her auntie.
Pen being genuinely touched and accepting of her mother and sisters trying to do better. Pen is so happy to make her sisters’ vision for the ball—in secret, no less—a reality (there is little that Pen’s earnings and Varley’s resourcefulness couldn’t accomplish). Pen allows Portia to take the credit to heal their relationship, as Prudence and Phillippa were a little hurt by the excitement of Pen’s wedding. (They were both wed when the family’s position was more precarious.)
As Part 2 progresses, Pen starts to embrace her birthright Featherington boldness (on her terms) with the increasingly rich colors and patterns in her dresses and glamorous hair and makeup.
The Dankworth/Finch Ball, with its glorious purple and orange and ostrich feathers, was the highlight of the social season. The Featheringtons are not merely gaudy—they are extravagant, exuberant, and captivating. Never dull.
In the end, the girls all have completely besotted husbands who are good, kind men and have given birth to beautiful children. The title is secure. The only place for the season to end is at Featherington House. Season 3 was their triumph.
how i'm sleeping tonight knowing colin and penelope are happily married with a healthy baby, benedict and francesca are bi, kate and anthony are going to india to visit edwina and give birth to their baby (and maybe already have since penelope has), eloise is friends with penelope again and going to see more of the world as she wanted, francesca is on her honeymoon with john, michaela end game is on the horizon, violet finding love again, and benedict is next season.
Ok, here's why I didn't have a problem with Colin in Part 2. He was processing so many emotions.
1. This man is so in love with Pen, has been by his own admission, for a long time that he was completely blindsided by her secret. Colin is unhinged with his love on good days. Their confrontation was heated, but his devastation more than his anger was the focus. He loves her, and she's been lying. So, he lashed out and said things he didn't even believe because he couldn't process his feelings.
He gets to feel this way, imo. Penelope of all people knows him best and what he was going through, which is why she was so gently firm and understanding with him.
2. Once he processed the lie, then came the feelings of fear for her and them if Lady Whistledown was unmasked. It's a big deal if not handled right. (Book made a point of this, too) She doesn't quite have that fear, which pisses him off because anything could happen to his wife, and Colin is not having that shit. So they fight, and she stops him cold with her yelling her love at him, which leads to heavy petting session and his beginning to thaw.
3. He honestly can not understand why Penelope loves him. This one is really his own self-worth, which he has been wrestling with his whole life, but he looks at her, this amazing woman who apparently is one of the most influential people and he cannot grasp why she loves him. He doesn't understand that she loves the bones of him and he is afraid she can't love him they way he does her.
4. He wants to be her hero so badly because she is his. He doesn't realize he already is by just being him because he has never been enough before.
5. He literally wants her always, and no matter how mad he is, that doesn't change, so he needs to reconcile that.
Imagine you are Colin and having to process all of this in the span of like a week? It's a lot, friends. It's why Pen gives him so much grace but forces him to confront those feelings.
From where I was sitting, they handled all that really well.
I cannot get this facial journey out of my head.
Here’s a man that can give you pleasure on command, then be adorably exasperated when he asks, “could the carriage driver not keep on driving?” (which makes me melt/giggle every time I watch it—the delivery of this line and their ensuing laughter are the SWEETEST), then lovingly and considerately (✌🏼) put you back together, and then give you any one of these soft, adoring, heated, and confident looks, let alone all of them, as he decides that you will be his forever—I just cannot, will not, do not want to get over it.
And this is “tame” compared to Part 2?!
Colin, have mercy! 🫠
We don’t talk about this scene enough. First of all, both of these looks are SER👏🏼VING👏🏼. I mean, goddamn! What a gorgeous couple. It’s giving Heathcliff and Cathy vibes (hopefully with comparatively less angst).
And I don’t understand why some experience Pen’s “skills as they are” as cringe or secondhand embarrassment triggering. She is hilariously ADORABLE. That shoulder shimmy just kills me (and Colin too).
Don’t worry my anxious, sensitive babes. Pen’s skills are romancing the only man that matters.
