ZACH OLGUIN.

location: a sturdy-looking fruit tree? with: @ronniedavidson

zack was no stranger to tree climbing, spending a better part of his childhood scaling trees near his house, dealing with rough falls and ending up with broken bones. every time his injury had healed, the cycle would start all over again. needless to say, his parents had worried about him every step of the way. but as silly as it sounded, being in a tree gave him a sense of security. 

there was no one else on which was why he chose to climb up a tree on a whim after the meeting with cambra. it’s the only place he could get to himself to think without getting disturbed. the leaves rustle as he steps on branches, then pull himself up. step, pull, step. he puts a little too much weight on his next foothold, branch shaking as he swings himself onto another. 

unbeknownst to him, his action had caused some of the fruits to fall. had it hit someone? he wouldn’t know.

Ronnie had been minding her business, following the beaten footpath up from the main passageway to the town square when it happened. 

The shudder of tree branches. The craning of her neck. A flash of white. A rush of blood to the head.

“Oh, fuck!” She immediately pressed her hand to her face and regretted the reflex. Her brow bone throbbed; she could feel her pulse in her face as she stared down at the offending thing. It was one of a few that had fallen from the heavens ⏤ ripe, bulbous pomelos, shaken loose from the branches above ⏤ and struck Ronnie square in the face. That’s going to leave a bruise, she thought, turning her attention upward, to the continued sounds of movement. There, nestled in the tree, was the silhouette of a person. “Hey!” she called up. Her fingers gently traveled the area surrounding the impact point in an effort to detect any trace of blood. It didn’t feel like there was an open wound, but as the seconds wore on sensation around her eye (apart from the steady thrum of her pulse) was quickly diminishing. “You trying to kill someone? What are you doing up there?”

JUDE SANDOVAL.

They made eye contact first through the viewfinder - or rather, Jude saw her gaze through the lens first, before he lowered it and tried his best to play dumb, like, Who, me? It was just as well the glass was between them; saved him the trouble of a verbal explanation, for now. Can I? he mouthed, lifting the camera again, tapping the shutter release, and then pointing in her direction. He was always one to take action first and ask for permission later - this also applied on digs, and Cambra would’ve fired him if he weren’t so good at what he did - but maybe she needed some encouragement. 

Jude walked closer, so he was about a foot from the glass, and pointed to her journal. Her penmanship was lovely, meandering across the page. He mimed writing, tapped the camera again. I can give it to you, he tried to mouth. People usually liked getting a copy of the prints after - they were mementoes, or they were mailed along with other letters. Jude hoped she wouldn’t storm out and confront him. This was the last shot on the reel, and then he could scramble back to his darkroom and get it developed tonight and make a copy for the girl, whoever she was. He raised three fingers and made a circle with his index finger and thumb - the universal sign (at least, he hoped it was universal) for Okay? 

The scene played out in comedic fashion, the pair communicating silently through the large glass window in exaggerated expressions and pantomimed directions. Ronnie had to wonder how odd the exchange looked to anyone looking on, but realized that no one seemed to care. The residents of Ialis had their own concerns, of which she and the photographer were excluded. The mere existence of people around them ⏤ passing by with a bag of groceries from Nalos, meandering about the fountain in the square, enjoying a freshly-pulled shot of espresso at the café counter ⏤ was of no apparent importance to him. He was looking to capture a specific shot. Maybe if she obliged, he’d leave her alone. Or better yet, join her, and explain the

Ronnie nodded to indicate her willingness to go along with it. Okay, she mouthed. Looking from his face to her notebook, she set her pen on the page. He wanted her to write, so she wrote: she put the situation in words, committing the details of her encounter with this stranger to paper in a flowing tangent that she knew she’d revisit in the months to come and laugh at the surreality of it all. And when she’d filled two pages with hasty scribbles, she looked up to meet the gaze of the mysterious photographer once more, asking him through the glass in a hushed tone: “Did you get the shot?”

RIVKA PITCHLYNN.

pitch choked out a laugh, wading to the side of the spring to sit on a rock ledge just beneath the surface. life on digs had long cured her of her modesty, but she could tell the intern was uncomfortable, so she didn’t stretch out on the rocks as she might have with a stranger.

“i’ll live. i’ll just have to go dive for one sometime soon.” she laid her head back and closed her eyes. “how do you like the dig so far?”

It was bound to happen. A bunch of people, living and working in close quarters. Stressful situations. The general carefree attitude that came with island living. Being naked in the company of others felt as inevitable as the weather, yet there was a new kind of vulnerability to it as Ronnie stared down at the ripples in the water. Pitch wasn’t her equal, in more ways than one, and it was daunting to be in her company now. 

“It’s everything and nothing I expected it to be. Ialis is magical,” she answered without a hint of irony before taking note of the archeologist’s relaxed position and following suit, closing her eyes to the warm light. Maybe if she remained still, focused on her breathing and the sounds that echoed about the spring, some semblance of peace would come to her. “What about you? Is there something you’re hoping to find here?”

GOAL: you’re furious at simon for ruining the first artifact find in the dig and attempt to help him either cover it up or repair it. also, the lizard is an issue.

SIMON WALSH.

his first mistake was definitely the adoption of hobart earlier that day. but ronnie had been supportive of that, and there was really no harm to be done in having an iguana in their room, right? right!  the second - and much worse mistake - was poking around the dig site at night. even showing up there alone was a bad idea, but simon had a bad habit of never thinking these things through. they hadn’t come up with anything so far, so he had taken it upon himself to try and do something good for the team. to put in the extra hours and maybe, just maybe find something on his own - something to proudly present to taha.  he knew what he had stepped on before he even looked.  a piece of pottery, which he had successfully pulled from hardened clay in the earth, had been resting at his side when the batteries in his flashlight went out. but he had spare ones, a few yards to his left. it was on his return to where he had been digging that simon broke the piece beneath his foot. his heart jumped up to his throat.  ronnie was the first person his mind - surely, she wouldn’t blame him. it was a mistake! it could’ve happened to anyone! it wasn’t his fault. the five pieces were gathered up carefully in his hands, clasped together to keep them safe as he rushed his way back to the boarding house - foolishly leaving his bag behind.  he headed into their room, shutting the door tightly behind him and leaning against it. “ronnie. sos. we have a problem.” 

The boarding house had fallen quiet sometime after the late communal dinner, the crew retiring to their respective rooms or embarking on a walk into town in search of something more than the creaking walls of their seemingly-ancient accommodation. Ronnie had chosen to stay behind despite the light prodding to tag along to the bar so that she could shower in peace and get a few hours of sleep in. Hobart needed to be fed, too. So she excused herself once the dishes had been cleared, pockets full of leafy greens carefully smuggled out the kitchen, and returned to the room she shared with Simon, her fellow intern, and the iguana he’d adopted that morning. She hadn’t anticipated becoming a caregiver for a small exotic lizard at the outside of the trip, but Ialis was full of surprises. As was Simon. 

Ronnie was sat on her bed with Hobart, watching the iguana chew the stem of a spinach leaf when he entered the room. There was something amiss about him. He looked like he’d just run a half-marathon across the island, and when he spoke, she knew it wasn’t good news he was about to share. “Please don’t tell me you ‘adopted’ another animal. Hobart is enough work as it is.” Simon’s hands, cupped together, could contain any sort of small creature lovingly collected from the brush surrounding the house, or from the rocks by the dig site. Nodding to indicate whatever he was carrying, she asked: “C’mon... out with it. What is it? Please tell me it’s not a spider. Anything that has more than four legs, maybe six, is a no-go. I can handle a baby mouse, but I swear to God, if it’s some sort of bug, you’re sleeping outside. Maybe Nate has a spare hammock.”

NATE DECKARD.

Why would anyone want to leave their almost established life behind for a dig? It wasn’t like they were getting a hefty paycheck to attend, but it was easy to con a team together when favors were owed. Except, it almost seemed like everyone else actually wanted to be there. The whole boat ride to the island had been spent in silence and for the most part, everyone around him had respected that. Those that knew him knew how he operated and those that didn’t, well, they’d learn quick enough. He did his job and nothing more, but then again, they didn’t really have detailed job descriptions. If something needed to be completed, every last one of them would participate in order to keep the old man appeased.

The female at the door, though not familiar, was going to be someone he worked closely with over the next few months. She was far too eager for his liking and her excitement left a bitter taste in his mouth. “Right,” he nodded, taking a moment to close the book in his lap. If he was going to plan, he couldn’t do it with someone standing over his shoulder.

“Make sure you grab the non-drowsy bottle, yeah? Doubt Taha wants one of his interns knocked for the first official day on site,” he replied smoothly, eyes still settled on the beaten leather of his closed journal. It had many dig plans on its pages, along with some poorly drawn figures and a few self-notes. “I could probably use a trip into town myself if you wanted some company. Can’t really think of anything I need, but it wouldn’t hurt to scope out the town before we settled in.”

Deckard’s disinterest in her presence was obvious. It wasn’t anything new ⏤ even now, at the outset of the dig, only hours after the group had landed on Ialis. Few among the crew assembled by Taha seemed to be overly thrilled by the prospect of having not one but two inexperienced interns lingering at the fringes of their workspaces. Ronnie was trying to take it in stride; the only other option was crying about it (which she was heavily considering, but maybe later, at a more convenient time). She’d have to show them, Deckard included, that she was worth their time and the space she took up.

“Yeah, of course,” Ronnie nodded, feeling wholly uncertain that any of the stores in town would stock the regular version of the medication, nevermind the non-drowsy stuff. When she opened her mouth to ask again if there was anything he wanted, he suggested accompanying her into town to scope things out, whatever that meant, all without looking up from his well-worn journal. Huh. She hadn’t anticipated having anyone tag along for the walk. “Uh, yeah, you’re welcome to join me.” A beat passed between them. Ronnie shifted her weight back to her other foot. “I was planning to leave now. Are you ready to go?”

RIVKA PITCHLYNN.

LOCATION: THE BATHS WHO: ANYONE

pitch had spent the day setting up camp with taha and the rest of the crew and was dying for some relaxation time. it wasn’t as if she was unused to the work, just that despite her strength, her muscles protested her every move. she made her way to the public baths, where a hot spring from the volcano bubbled out from the earth, and slipped into the water. 

“pass me the sponge, will you?”

Ronnie hadn’t been expecting company at the hot spring. Everyone had dispersed at the end of a long and ardous day spent establishing camp ⏤ setting up tents, reviewing supplies, building a perimeter for the dig site, bickering over sleeping arrangements ⏤ and, left to her own devices, she’d wandered far enough away from the group to wade into the ocean in search of relief. On the way down, she’d spotted the baths. Reprieve, without the worry of drowning. That was about as relaxing as it could get, given the circumstances.

What a cruel joke that turned out to be. Relaxation. It was only when she was stripped down, sweat-dampened clothes left haphazardly folded on the rocks, and treading lightly in the shallow water that Ronnie realized she wasn’t alone. Heat flooded her face as Pitch made her presence known, asking after a sponge as she entered the pool. The intern laughed nervously, all the while cursing the situation. Her own nakedness. The quiet. The fact that she’d barely traded words with the other woman since the crew had assembled, and now they were sharing bathwater. Was there a sponge? Her eyes darted around the spring before she looked to the brunette and tried to laugh off the request, arms subtly folding across her chest to obscure her breasts under the water’s surface. “Fresh out of sponges. You could try a rock? I’m sure they’re great for exfoliating.” 

Pull it together, Ronnie.

JUDE SANDOVAL.

Jude first noticed the girl in the café window - the coffee shop at Nalos Goods had become a haunt of his, and he thought he recognized all the other regulars by now. He’d already lifted the camera to his face to get a shot of the tables outside, the white umbrellas almost glowing in the sun, and slightly to the left, there she was. He couldn’t quite pinpoint what had caught his eye, but it was easy to inch his camera to his face again, peer through the viewfinder, and wind the film advance lever. Jude admitted to himself that it was generally not acceptable to take photos of strangers caught unawares, but those were often his favorite shots - the ones where people were buried in thought or activity, wearing open joy or worry or confusion, not the stiff smiles of portraiture. He almost wished he could tell her to look up so he could capture the expression on her face.

The journal had been her sister’s idea ⏤ daily entries, time permitting, chronicling the day and making note of updates as the dig progressed. It would be a valuable keepsake to have in the years to come, the pages filled with anecdotes and memories of her adventures, but Ronnie was already beginning to feel intimidated and she’d only just begun. One entry, scribbled out in parts between the pre-boarding lull at the airport and the house nearby that was host to the crew, outlined the hours-long journey to Ialis... save for the details of her sea sickness on the boat ride over. It was for the best; there was no need to wax poetic about the horrifying ordeal that had unfolded in front of the group of strangers she would be living and working with for the duration of the trip.

Today was a new day, therefore a new entry. So she thumbed through the notebook to find the place where she’d left off; wrote the date at the top of the page, her lower lip tucked between her teeth; and promptly lost her train of thought.

Defeated, Ronnie set the pen down and glanced about the café in search of something, anything, to start the entry with. Two fisherman were engaged in conversation by the cream and sugar station, and the man holding down the fort behind the counter was scanning the stations on the radio. Fairly quiet for mid-morning service. Her gaze drifted out to the ivory tables that comprised the coffee shop’s outdoor patio, and that’s when she saw the silhouette of someone close in age, maybe a few years older, holding a camera in a way that suggested they might be photographing her. Nah, it has to be the café, she mused, reclining in her seat. That’s the focus, not me. But as the lens lowered, her eyes found the stranger’s in the sunlight, and she suspected by the expression forming on his face that he’d taken a photo of her, or photos. 

Eyebrows drawn together in a frown, Ronnie stared at him through the glass, unsure of what she could say. To her knowledge, it wasn’t a crime to take pictures of someone in public, though she felt a bit put off by the situation, knowing there were images of her now stored on the device’s memory card or captured in film. The latter was especially unsettling. Film was far more permanent than digital files. “What the fuck,” she said quietly. Her hands pantomimed the next question, posed for confirmation and enunciated enough that he could read her lips: “Did you just take a picture of me?”

NATE DECKARD.

Who: ANY TAHA MEMBER.

This fucking dig with these fucking people was the last place he wanted to be. Had this opportunity came years ago, perhaps he would’ve been more eager to be there. While everyone around him seemed excited for what the island held, Nate found himself leaning more towards the feeling of resentment. Head pounded with annoyance as he settled into a room of a boarding house, his leather-bound journal placed atop the wooden table. Taha preferred strategy over blind-digging, which was why he found himself sketching out the parameters of a dig site according to a map he’d gotten ahold of.

They were located on the southern tip of the island, close enough to the water if someone wanted to cool off with a swim. He doubted he’d have time for such childish actions, but there had to be someway to make the dig more tolerable. The quiet creak of the wooden door from behind was enough to draw Nate’s attention from his work. Perhaps whoever it was had no idea he was there, but it didn’t change his dry toned response. “There are plenty of other rooms to work in,” he hummed, not even bothering to look over his shoulder to see who’d walked in, or at least started to.

Boy, did it feel good to be back on solid ground. The boat ride to Cariaki Harbor had been punishingly long, and Veronica had spent most of it white-knuckling through the worst of her sea sickness, embarrassment burning hot in her cheeks. Tossing her cookies in front of the entire crew hadn’t been her intended method of making an impression, but it was too late to remove the image now burned into everyone’s heads. The driver had apologized for the turbulence brought on by a series of choppy waves, but his platitudes, though sincere, did little to quell the sickness that had wound her stomach in knots. It was only after the boat had been docked, the team disembarked, and the contents of her stomach completely emptied that Ronnie started to feel somewhat better. 

Some color had returned to her face in the hours since the crew’s arrival, but she still felt a trickle of cold sweat glide down her spine as she wandered about the boarding house serving as the crew’s accommodation in town, taking shopping requests from anyone who bothered to acknowledge her. 

Deckard was decidedly in the Fuck Off, Intern camp. 

“Uh, sorry. Didn’t mean to barge in.” Wincing slightly, Ronnie shifted her footing in the doorway and glanced about the room, eager to avoid his direct gaze. Not that he’d bothered to look up. “I just wanted to ask if there’s anything you needed? From the market or shops? I was headed out to see if they’ve got any Dramamine, and figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.” Or would it? Taha had gently suggested that she be aware of Deckard’s space, and she wasn’t one to doubt her employer’s guidance. But she had to wonder: Taha wouldn’t have recruited the man for the dig if he was as abrasive as had been implied... right?
