I have so many thoughts about the fact that gimmick blogs belong to a spectrum rather than meaning a specific thing. This leads directly into a really common response to my work - "I usually don't like gimmick blogs but I love this!" Which I'm neutral on as a response, it's not exactly praise but it's not a slam. It's meant well.

The simplest breakdown really is that what most users class as a "gimmick blog" is just what 10 years ago we classed as a "roleplay blog" except for some reason that framing stopped being used, while the return to Tumblr as other sites flagged meant that users want to have a way to spend their time here. So you have the embroidery blog, Elvis, someone adding a letter of the alphabet to every post, and car identification all jockeying for attention on post reblogs, under the same umbrella.

I do consider myself a gimmick blog and rightfully so but irl I typically refer to this space as my "art blog" because it actually conveys meaning to whoever I'm talking to. And I usually see the reaction I get of "wow I don't like gimmicks but-" not as me being exceptional or whatever, but just that I'm posting art.

Someone who can bang out multiple posts a day with lower energy gimmicks has to harvest that amount in order to get the same reaction as I do by posting art once a week at best, which is about as fast as I can work if all conditions of my life allow it. But I'm able to get those reactions because Tumblr has trained its users to play spot-the-difference on jpgs and it makes everyone look twice, and look for the URL.

It is super super easy and once it's in this form it's super easy to twist together and use for crochet or weaving!

Felt like doing more weird stained glass bugs so here's a quick and dirty redo of a concept from like 2022 lmao
