My mother tells me I am smart like Frankenstein, but these days, I resemble his homemade monster. All shock, all scars, all spliced up; stitched back together with my own hands. Sometimes, I think she’s right about me. I feel like I am made of different people’s parts, like nothing inside me fits together anymore. It makes me wonder about Frankenstein’s monster; if he felt anything about all that patchwork. If he dreamt of taking himself apart as well, trying to rearrange his mismatched pieces.

they say you’re weird girl. that you scare them girl. you stardust and ghost stories girl. you ripped jeans and moonlight girl. they call you strange. girl obsessed with the skeletons of tragedy. girl obsessed with other peoples’ obsessions. they will always talk girl. they will always judge girl. let them. you outer space girl. girl with ink splotched skin. a heart that won’t quit girl. hope that the world can be redeemed girl. they want you to be quiet girl. an only if they want it girl. only if they ask for it girl. be you girl. dance on their toes girl. step on their tongues girl. you loudmouthed girl. you always speak your mind girl. listen girl. that’s the sound of them not asking for it girl. give it to them anyway girl. give it to them anyway.

A hypothetical scenario involving the in-laws:

Your mom actually likes me. She actually wants to invite me over for dinners and holiday gatherings with the rest of the family.

Your mom thinks of me as part of the family. We bake pies together for Christmas and go out to lunch once in a while, you know, just the girls.

She thinks of me when she buys me gifts and never gives me something that was meant for you.

Your mom pronounces my name right and doesn't use it like a curse word.

She loves how supportive I am of you and would adore seeing us with children, whether it actually happens or not.

We go shopping together for birthdays and check with each other to make sure we didn’t buy doubles of anything.

We would share recipes and books and..and..and and baby photos of you over cocktails in the living room of our house.

Your mom would actually help us get the house this time.

She never mocks me and we respect each other and only wish the best.

Your mom thinks of me as part of the family.
