Completely and utterly by mistake.

I know I hadn’t intended to, I knew that from the start.

See, I had a plan. I wouldn’t get attached.

But things with you were so simple and easy.

And you would ask me,

“Are you okay?”

two, three maybe seven times a day;

and my answer actually mattered to you...at least it seemed that way.

And the way you held my hand, as though you were scared to let go. As though letting go would be worse than any pain you’d ever experienced or witnessed.

That’s why I must have loved you without realising.

Death Sucks

My great grandfather was tortured in the war. Not a great war like the Nazis and Jews, but a war that still ravaged my country and left wounds so mentally deep they went unnoticed until it was too late. My great grandfather and several other people were tied up, blindfolded using some harmful substances and beaten up until one day my great grandfather’s eyes “burst” and he slowly went blind. He is years older than his wife, who has taken care of him and stood by him and their family, and everyone was sure he would go first.

Until a few hours ago, when my great grandmother couldn’t hold on any longer and finally let herself get some rest. Because she did good, she lived her life for others and when her time came to go and she was ready to go she stayed because everyone kept asking her too. But a few hours ago, she said goodbye because she could feel it. She explained to my mother that it was too late to visit and that my mother should let her go. After this call, she found her rest.

My great grandfather will most likely never see again but in his old age he has started to forget that his eyes cannot be restored by a pair of spectacles, so he keeps telling his children and grandchildren that if only he could get glasses. They all haven’t quite figured out how to gently remind him of the war that he saw take his home and beloved ones away.

How then, I ask, do you tell a hopeful old war veteran who is still waiting on his eyesight, that his wife has left him? That she’s finally found peace and rest and she would have loved to stay but her fingers were slipping all year and she couldn’t hold on to life any longer? How?

Death sucks. One day you could exist and take up significant space and resources and the next day you just wouldn’t, and the only consolation for those left behind is that maybe, hopefully, you had accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and have now found solace in heaven. I’m nineteen now and I still haven’t quite mastered the concept of dying, I probably never will. And that’s not the most poetic conclusion but it’s all I have.

YouTube 101

I’ve been a YouTuber for about four months and when I tell you that it’s one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life I mean just that. IT’S BEEN A JOURNEY!

No-one takes it seriously when you say “I’m working” or “I have to film”. Thankfully no one expects me to be making an income yet so I don’t have to explain my career path at the moment. But one day I will and when that day comes I’m going to need numbers to back it up. Not just money but also views. If you’re also a small YouTuber - then you know how frustrating this little hitch on the road to YouTube success is!

I mean you work hard, filming for two days then beginning the rigorous process of editing which contrary to popular belief is gruelling and annoying and EXHAUSTING. And then sometimes you find yourself in that rather unfortunate predicament that leaves you nearly suicidal when you realise there’s a certain clip that got corrupted or you didn’t press record, so you’re back to step 1 - filming. And you want to cry and take a year off to recollect your thoughts and rethink this whole existence thing but you can’t because it’s Tuesday and your channel banner says in bold “new video every Wednesday”. So even though you would love a year long break you can’t have one because in less than twenty-four hours you have to post because you’re too small a YouTuber to get away with inconsistency.

So after shedding tears and contemplating quitting YouTube because a desk job honestly seems great and is looking mighty fine, you get up and begin the process of re-assembling your make shift tripod stand (because you’re too small a Youtuber to afford a camera or equipment for that matter) and refilm the lost footage. After two hours, you’re done, you’re so happy and keen to start the editing process. This goes by slowly and you’re nearly in tears but seven hours and five coffees later you’re done it’s 2AM but you’re finally done. The voice over takes you another two hours to record and sync because you’re jittery and bleary eyed and haven’t slept since your last video went up. But finally, you’re done. The stupid video that you hate but are extremely proud of is ready and you’re elated, over caffeinated and damn near insane from what you have just gone through. But you did it and you feel like a champion, the lack of sleep is barely even bothering you because you’re a champion and champions don’t need sleep.

4AM. You go on Youtube and upload the video, which takes sixteen minutes to upload and process but that’s okay because you need to edit a thumbnail so while it processes you edit. The thumbnail turns out to be more time-consuming than you had anticipated, and at 4:45 you write a shoddy description and you’re FINALLY ready to press the Publish button and get rid of the stupid video that you put your heart and soul into.

At 5AM you officially release your video and it is now up to the rest of the world. You stumble to bed to get some well deserve rest for the next few hours.

You wake up at 10:30 AM impatient to check your views and see how much your channel has grown since you last saw it five and a half hours ago. It is at this second that your hopes and dreams are crushed because it’s been five and a half hours and not a single person among the seven billion on this earth has even accidentally clicked on your video. All that work for nothing. This is what heartbreak is. Not a boy cheating on you or your food falling (although that’s a close second) but this. No views. Not a single one.
