 Bran percibió el miedo de Verano en aquel momento de brillo. Cerró los dos ojos, abrió un tercero y se desprendió de su piel de niño como si fuera una capa mientras dejaba atrás la torre... 

Y se encontró fuera, bajo la lluvia, con la barriga llena de ciervo, acobardado entre los arbustos mientras el cielo se rompía y rugía sobre él. El olor de las manzanas podridas y las hojas húmedas casi ocultaba el del hombre, pero allí estaba. Oyó el tintineo y el roce de la pieldura; vio a los hombres moverse entre los árboles. Uno que portaba un palo se movía con torpeza, llevaba una piel en la cabeza que lo dejaba ciego y sordo. El lobo dio un rodeo para esquivarlo; se metió entre las ramas chorreantes de un espino y bajo las ramas desnudas de un manzano. Los oía hablar, y allí, por debajo de los olores de lluvia, hojas y caballo, le llegó el hedor agudo, rojo, del miedo...
