The Picture of Dorian Gray, a book written by an author who got imprisoned for sodomy, is getting a visual adaptation where the two characters with clear homoromantic undertones are turned into brothers.
Dracula, a book about a group of friends that explore the themes of antagonism and Victorian anxieties, is getting a visual adaptation where the count falls in love with one of his rape victims.
Wuthering Heights, a book that beats the reader over the head with a bat about how the POC protagonist wants to be privileged and white, is getting a visual adaptation with a white person as the protagonist and a POC as the one he envies.
The Odyssey, a book about a man from Ancient Greece trying to get home from war, is getting a visual adaptation coated in a "Hollywood" aesthetic that rejects accurate armour and casting.
2026 is not a good year for classic literature fans all around.

there’s something so gutwrenching about the fact that the female characters in obsession have real dreams and wishes but never get the chance to see them realized, while both male characters waste their wishes on short-term selfish satisfaction. they were complex, free-spirited young women who just wanted to create art, and they were destroyed by a man determined to confine them to his superficial perception of them. nikki wanted to be a writer, sarah wanted to be a tattoo artist and now neither of them will get to be anything at all

the tendency of making Fernand the main villain in The Count of Monte-Cristo adaptations speaks to the (mostly American) willingness to see bad things as something that individuals bring to life. meanwhile, in the book, Fernand has the least presence compared to Danglars (the evil of capitalism) and especially to Villefort (the evil of state corruption and the penal system). even Cadrousse, the silent bystander, gets more attention in text than Fernand as a person. Dumas' book is not about a personal tragedy, it's about the ease with which a random person can fall victim to the machine of the state. that's why the book is always relevant.

not the first person to point this out I'm sure, but I love that aside from the joke of half the "kids" thinking the count is a vampire, the count actually IS a vampire. in all ways but physical. from everybody else's perspective, at least: a young man was taken away and died. one day a strange and mysterious man shows up with pale skin, dressed in all black and terrifying in every way. he seems to be foreign, doesn't understand french customs and has strange habits, seemingly doesn't eat. he's accompanied by a beautiful woman he claims is his slave but he treats like a queen, behaves all in all unusual. he seduces young men around him and tempts people with his unimaginable riches. he's capable of superhuman feats, superhuman speeds, strength, precision. he speaks every language under the sun, has every skill known to man. he's omniscient, omnipotent. but most terrifying of all- he is that same man who died many years ago. he's different now. but he's the same man. and he still looks as young as he did, only... different. his mere presence forebodes death now, people he comes into contact with die or go mad shortly after, their lives are destroyed one way or another. his life was taken from him and now he takes the lives of others, perpetuating this cycle of death. he just doesn't do it by way of sucking anybody's blood. but otherwise, in all ways but physical, the count is a vampire. and that fucking rules.

one of my favorite subtle implications in the series is that it seems the Titan Army was fully banking on Percy being the host of Kronos. Why else would they make their main base a cruise ship if their primary enemy is a son of Poseidon? Named after Andromeda, the wife of Perseus? Why would they work on Oceanus specifically being free so much? Side notably with other children of Poseidon? Why plant Zeus and Hades' items of power on Percy when Luke already had them? Why only Zeus and Hades' items, not Poseidon's? Well because they really need Percy as Kronos' host, that's why. (and Poseidon siding with them because of that would be a bonus as well)
I like to imagine Luke's cabin on the Princess Andromeda is fully decked out with like "WELCOME PERCY" and sea-themed sheets and everything and he hates it so much cause it's a constant reminder he failed and he was Kronos' second choice. Also then he gets his super special pegasus not even exactly stolen by Percy, but the pegasus willingly defects to be Percy's personal steed instead, which must just be insult to injury. Luke has immense one-sided beef with Percy and Percy has no idea.
This is Canon in my mind now.

The Master and Margarita is a satire about the 1930s USSR and satelite states, where buerocracy makes no sense, everybody is suspicious, people get taken away for no reason, the government that rewrites history and religion, just highlighting the absurdity of it all.
The Master and Margarita is about Yeshua (Jesus) and Pilates, how Yeshua got arrested not for his religious beliefs but for being anti authoritian, how he believes there's good in all people, how his teachings got twisted by somebody who doesn't understand him, and how the only person who actually understands him is the one who has to condemn him to death.
The Master and Margarita is a painful self portait about being an artist, how dictatorships kill art and artists, how you can fall from grace for having the wrong kind of thoughts and saying the wrong kind of things, how that can fundamentally break you, in ways you will never recover from.
The Master and Margarita is about Satan and his gang of weirdos throwing a sick ass ball in Moscow for sinners, criminals and bad people, while also causing trouble and fucking with the authorities.
But above all, The Master and Margarita is a story about how manuscripts don't burn, how everything you write has value.
