General Synopsis

Rose Fall will be an urban fantasy webcomic that follows those who wish to put a stop to the cruelty allowed by the titular Rose Fall County, a county ruled by a power-hungry tyrant.

Current Development Stage

I am scripting and making rough sketches, even got a head start in the clean sketches of Volume 1 pages. The title for Volume 1 has been decided. I am going to attempt to make my own font (my handwriting) for the comic as well at some point, unsure how that will go.

General Content Warnings

violence, death, abuse, suicidal ideation, tyranny, mild sexual implications/jokes, and swearing (sexual implications/jokes and violence/death/etc. will not be explicit or detailed).

Where Pages Will Be Posted

Tumblr is a 100% definite and will be posted on @rose-fall-comic. Pages will also be posted on ComicFury, which would be the most preferred way to read imo. Also got my eyes on Webcomic Studio. I might make my own site for the comic one day too, which would be ideal.

Some sketches I did of Aroma’s (and eventually Wisteria’s too) house last year (March of last year even) that I never posted until now. I’ve struggled with planning her house and I’m finally settling with this layout, maybe with some minor tweaks.

Aroma chose such a big house even tho she was living alone for a bit because one: she wanted an extra room for her hobbies (the bedroom that isn’t the primary bedroom), two: she just likes having the space, especially since she dreams of having a group of friends she can have the space for (hence an entire dining room), and three: she has the money and was able to afford it. It’s big, really a home for a family, but it’s not too big for what she wants. The only thing she feels she could do without is the extra bathroom, though it is convenient, especially after Wisteria starts living with her and she ends up making more friends who visit.

Some Shawn sketches to get used to his new hair. Though that second one was more pose practice than anything. His ear in the last sketch should be lower tho. Dude needs some anger management therapy. And therapy in general.

I had dream last night, first one to feature Rose Fall characters in a long while. And hilariously, it was Ashton and Shawn. All I remember was them fighting. Closest I can compare it to was like feral cats fighting in an alley. No soul powers, no cool action choreography. Just an up close and personal blinded by rage fight. Not too far off from their actual interactions at least lol

What has helped you learn to write natural-sounding dialogue and interactions/how do you plan it out in a way that flows? I really admire how the way you write conversations doesn't sound stagnant or robotic.

It's especially frustrating in scenes where you have to relay a lot of important information, make it interesting and summarized while still keeping it sounding like something an actual person would say. I feel it gets easier when you get to know your characters. These days my characters pretty much talk by themselves and I just trim around the edges. Not always, of course, but a lot of the time.

Take in account their temperament, how logical, how rushed, how much of a front they put up. Nero wouldn't say "you hurt me", he'd say "I'll fuck you up". Runi wouldn't say "I'll fuck you up", she'd say "you're not very nice, are you."

This is not something I've done, but maybe exercises of having your cast relay the same message in their own words would work?

Scenario: Gang eats food that isn't up to their standards.

"I will not eat this." "Eugh... Does somebody else want this?" "It's... not the best." "This is insanely disgusting." "Not for me!"

I don't know! I feel like that would help some people.

As for keeping it flowing... thoughts and prayers? Sentence length plays a big part I imagine. If you can say something with less words, go for it. And break longer text into smaller bubbles! Rambling and constant beating around the bush are very humane but they might make it a tedious read.

Drew some eyes as practice for regaining some of Rose Fall’s old style, a doodle Mike cuz I want to regain my old doodle style too, and a clean sketch of Ashton cuz I’m still a bit rusty drawing him. His hair looks a lil eh but I like how it turned out overall (ignore the fact I drew him at an angle where I didn’t need to draw any eyes lol).

With the eyes, I didn’t used to draw them as round as I do now in my main style. Same with the irises, they were more oval. So I wanted to bring that back and instantly, looking at these eyes, it feels more like Rose Fall again :)

Hello!! Was just really curious after the recent pages but how do you adjust the colors of your characters to match the scene they are in? Sorry if they was worded funny but it always looks very lovely :)

Sure!

First I put their regular flat colors down (I do bgs first so that I'm making the Characters Fit Into The Scene instead of Fitting The Scene Into The Characters)

2. Then I slap a layer with the layermode "color" on top. Sometimes I colorpick a color from the bg to use here, but sometimes I just go with what looks the nicest to me. This is a really desaturated scene so I picked a very desaturated green/blue

3. But just with the color layer the characters still really stand out! Sometimes that's the vibe I want, but this is a moodier scene. So to darken up the colors I put a multiply layer with a very light color over top of them. This scene is blue, so I chose blue.

4. Scene specific, but on top of that I put the ""shading"" scribble texture to imply their wet fur

5. and then on top of all of that I put the multiply gradient that I use for shading in this comic.

I don't use all of these steps all of the time, it just depends on the scene.

Sometime I will add a "lighten" Layer if warbler or another very dark furred cat is in a scene to help the blacks blend in more OR if it's a night scene, have them stand out against an already dark bg.

I also like to add some lower opacity normal layers to have characters "blend" into the bg if they are not the focus of the panel. It helps keep the readers eye on what I want them to look at as well as creates depth.

Been struggling with drawing Rose Fall related stuff lately and I think I’ve figured out why. While my main art style has developed, I’ve been almost fully applying it to Rose Fall and it doesn’t really feel the same to me anymore. I look back on my old Rose Fall art and it’s like. there’s a look there that’s not present in recent art. And I realize now what it is. I gotta embrace the anime-inspired way I drew eyes. I gotta, I still like how it looks, that’s the Rose Fall style. I got different styles for different things, I got my mlp art style, my varying wc art styles, my main art style. Rose Fall should have its own too. So I wanna study my old art, see how I used to do things, and try to replicate it while applying aspects of my newer main style more subtly into it :)

Writing character profiles is both fun and frustrating. Depended on which aspect of the character I’m describing. It’s mostly fun tho.

I’m second guessing making Jaden a hummingbird. The beak would be very long and very thin, making it difficult to draw in different angles and expressions and taking up too much space in panels. He’s still gonna be short though, I wouldn’t change that part of him. Maybe he can be a hawk? Hmmm. I’ll have to think on it more

I really adore your art and was wondering: How do you decide what lines to colour and which to keep black?

hmmm it depends on the depth/separation of the elements I'm coloring the lines of. typically I like to keep elements more visually separate for readability and emphasis, and I enjoy a bold/dark outline for main subjects and also to use for foreshortening

it's a bit hard to explain without visuals so I threw this together for some examples of when I may decide to color lineart

I also use it for highlights, atmospheric lighting, to add new or complimentary colors or to tie different colors together with a middle one (like a blue and red character, I might use purple in some of the lineart to balance)
